I need a dressing gown that doesn't look like a dressing gown

I am WFH atm and like to get up, put on dressing gown, have coffee, get down to work at my PC. And two hours later I might still be working, but am still in my dressing gown and it doesn't feel right.

Can the hive mind find me a sort of "in between" dressing gown? Preferably black, but not too fussed about colour. Plus I am always on the hunt for different dressing gown styles, so even if it doesn't fit this bill I'm open to suggestions!

I'm thinking that posters suggesting the OP change her routine could perhaps take their own advice .
Maybe change their own routine of popping on a thread and posting they could first read the OP's posts?
They might see for instance that the OP wants to stay in her warm PJs a bit longer .
And that she doesn't need to be instantly in alert work mode because she's spending down time before she starts work .
Just a thought .

I have this dressing gown from wool overs. If I’m cold at home I quite often wear it over my clothes and have worn it out under my coat as an extra layer. It’s amazingly good quality (no bobbling or pilling) and lightweight. It really doesn’t look like a dressing down at all if you leave the belt off.

@WildCherryBlossom I like this. Wasn't in the market for a new dressing gown as I'm happy with my towelling one but am very tempted. What's the sizing like?

WildCherryBlossom · 26/09/2025 09:00

I’m currently a 14 and have it in large. I can comfortably wear it over other clothes / jumpers etc but it doesn’t drown me. I wash it on woollen cycle. It doesn’t seem to have shrunk and keeps its shape well. I’m eyeing up other products in their merino cashmere blend at the moment - polo necks etc as I’m so happy with it. I got it a couple of winters ago, live in a cold house, so I wear it a lot!

How about a quilted jacket? They’re popular in parts of Japan but here are some UK options -

That denim kimono is fabulous! Is that site legit? I can't find any trustpilot rating and ChatGPT thinks it's a bit dodgy.... but I hope not as now I know what I want for Christmas.

LillyPJ · 26/09/2025 09:37

Surely that's a dress that looks like a dressing gown?!

Yes. OP was looking for alternatives to a traditional dressing gown?

Hoppinggreen · 26/09/2025 10:03

I have a long belted wool cardi from M&S which I bought years ago that could easily be worn in public if needed but I use as a dressing gown

Yes. But she was looking for one that 'doesn't look like a dressing gown'!

loveyouradvice · 26/09/2025 10:37

Just wanted to share that my Mum and her friends used to wear "housecoats" at home... quite elegant, full length, warm and zipped up middle. Mum had at least two.

This was in the 70s!

Poirot1983 · 26/09/2025 10:54

I immediately thought of Jane Austens' lovely pelisse! Which would be perfect for me on the days I wake up, remember that I haven't putting the bins out and have to dash outside in pyjamas, boyfriends dressing gown (or any long coat I can grab from the hallway) and Croc's.

I would be less Bridget Jones and more Anne Elliot in this.

Not sure where one can buy one but isn't it beautiful?

I need a dressing gown that doesn't look like a dressing gown
comeondover · 26/09/2025 12:24

A few years ago, I bought something billed as a 'lounge dress' from M&S, which sadly I no longer have. It was ideal though. Long, loose, hooded, not open at the front. I hope they bring them back.

UpMyself · 26/09/2025 12:36

Toast used to sell djellabas.

My grandmother used to wear knitted bed jackets.

And... I've just realised I've turned into my grandmother with my cardigan over my pyjamas😂. Not that that's a problem she was a formidable woman!

Princesspollyyy · 26/09/2025 14:48

So basically you’re too lazy to get dressed? Are you also one of those that goes to the supermarket in your pyjamas?

UpMyself · 26/09/2025 14:57

@Princesspollyyy , she works for a bit then has a shower and gets dressed

Princesspollyyy · 26/09/2025 15:12

@UpMyself

when? Late afternoon? Early evening?

UpMyself · 26/09/2025 15:33

Read her posts.

AInightingale · 26/09/2025 18:31

Zip-up dressing gown. Far warmer, no stupid gaps for the cold to get in, no belt to get tied in knots. I had one I really liked from Dunnes Stores (Ireland) but they seem to have stopped doing them, annoyingly.

I'm constantly on the hunt for a corporate dressing gown. Cardigans and thick jumpers don't keep your legs warm and Oodies are unprofessional (well, the patterns I have are). I think we're fruitlessly searching for the same thing.

I feel that "corporate dressing gown" is a missed niche for fashion companies!! 😄
