I need a dressing gown that doesn't look like a dressing gown

I am WFH atm and like to get up, put on dressing gown, have coffee, get down to work at my PC. And two hours later I might still be working, but am still in my dressing gown and it doesn't feel right.

Can the hive mind find me a sort of "in between" dressing gown? Preferably black, but not too fussed about colour. Plus I am always on the hunt for different dressing gown styles, so even if it doesn't fit this bill I'm open to suggestions!

If you have time to put your dressing gown on first thing why don’t you just put on some clothes? I’d hate to be at my desk in a dressing gown!!

Because I don't want to 🙂

I like to get up in my warm pyjamas, put on a non dressing gown, go downstairs and make a coffee, and log on to my PC for a couple of hours or so. Then I get changed into my dog walking/workout gear and off we go.

My oodie is excellent for this as well.

last Christmas we all got one and we sit around in them as it gets cooler!!

we each have them in different colours.

Mine is emerald green
teenager likes the grey one. Similar to this which is in the sale

I have this dressing gown from wool overs. If I’m cold at home I quite often wear it over my clothes and have worn it out under my coat as an extra layer. It’s amazingly good quality (no bobbling or pilling) and lightweight. It really doesn’t look like a dressing down at all if you leave the belt off.

I'm definitely tending towards a coatigan/v long cardigan 👚

I'm not on work calls. Just doing stuff at my PC. And I like getting straight out of bed rather than getting dressed, iyswim.

ETA: Ooh, a coatigan... I think my mistake was starting with "dressing gown".

Edited

Didn't they used to be called house coats?? Should bring them back. Like mens smoking jackets 😂

WildCherryBlossom · 24/09/2025 20:27

100% need to bring back house coats!

How about a kimono? A black silk one would look very glam (probably wasted on delivery people but…). Or for a cheaper version, search for Donald Stanley on Vinted (his kimonos are one size fits all).

Or less glam but more cosy, a fleece cardigan from Henriette Steffensen (also have a look on Vinted for them):

I don’t wear a kimono but a kaftan which you can throw over your pjs - I love mine

rightoguvnor · 24/09/2025 22:02

Last winter someone bought me a set of pyjama bottoms, camisole and very long cardigan in a grey colour (i think it was from Tesco). The bottoms were too hot, the camisole was too revealing but the cardigan is great. I’ve actually worn it to work on a night shift and twoepople have admired it - I had to show them the label to prove it was nightwear. It has cuffs so no flappy arms, and pockets too.

Can’t beat a kantha jacket: ebay.us/m/oEA0cr

I have a grey zip thin fleece gown I just pop over my pjs. It’s from matalan, a bit like this but not as thick Gown and mine has a belt but can wear it without too. I often put it in over my clothes if I’m chilly, it’s just warm but not bulky.

I'm loving this thread .Can't get enough of lounge/nightwear and bag threads .

I'm picturing @incognitomummy and family living in their Shetland croft ,sans heating and dressed in their jumpsuits with flask pocket on the leg and
Rear exit zipper for easy bathroom breaks topped off by an oodie .

I use a fat face cardigan/hoodie as a dressing gown sometimes, like this one (although it's out of stock but I'm sure there are similar out there).

It's lovely and warm so if I'm really cold I'll stick that on when I'm working.

Loving all these suggestions! Long and wool seems to be winning out.

I have a kimono, but it feels too dressing-gowny.

Am also getting some ideas for general winter cosy dressing 😄

I have an old boucle/teddy cardigan of my DH's, he never wore it and it's perfect for me.

Oversized, long line, cosy and thick enough you can't tell I'm not wearing a bra but not too thick that I feel weighed down.

evilharpy · 25/09/2025 10:22

Two thoughts:

Not ideal if you have to keep getting up and walking around (making drinks/answering door etc) but nothing has ever kept me as cosy as my heated furry throw from Lakeland. It is life changing and I have no idea how I ever got through winters before I had it.

Not necessarily as long as the things you've been looking at but I do love a shacket. I have a few from the likes of Pull & Bear similar to this but a bit longer, thick soft flannel type things. They are incredibly warm and cosy and comfortable, but are clearly clothes rather than nightwear or loungewear so you could also throw on your trainers and pop out to the shop, or answer a call if you did need to.

RandomUsernameHere · 25/09/2025 10:33

Was also going to suggest a coatigan.
