I need a dressing gown that doesn't look like a dressing gown

I am WFH atm and like to get up, put on dressing gown, have coffee, get down to work at my PC. And two hours later I might still be working, but am still in my dressing gown and it doesn't feel right.

Can the hive mind find me a sort of "in between" dressing gown? Preferably black, but not too fussed about colour. Plus I am always on the hunt for different dressing gown styles, so even if it doesn't fit this bill I'm open to suggestions!

I wear an Oodie pretty much all the time (cold house), which doubles as my dressing gown, but I keep a Mrs Hinch loungewear set (hooded top and lounge pants) to pop on if I need to look respectable and warm without getting dressed. Actually I've been known to have the loungewear on under the Oodie and just whip the Oodie off if I need to be on a videocall.

But generally nobody cares what I look like round here and I walk the dog in my Oodie too so even the neighbours are used to seeing what looks like a mobile duvet shuffling around the village green. But it feels less 'just got out of bed' than wearing a dressing gown. Even if I have only just got out of bed.

I have a dressing gown that zips up. It’s brilliant

I wear an old very long wool blend cardigan with pockets that was in fashion about 12 years ago 😂

It's like this

Ooh, that's the longest one I've seen!

I am also quite interested in this one too, so I added it to my basket and tried to register but it needed an Ireland area code, so I checked with the help bot who confirmed that couldn’t be changed and so to go to the main uk next website (I hadn’t notice is was .ie before I went to register, after I’d added hoody to basket), but I have checked and it is also available on the main next site so have switched to that. Obviously you may already know/realised that, but thought I’d add it just in case anyone else (like me) didn’t notice and fancied ordering it.

Has anyone yet suggested that this OP meets the other poster with a Max Mara coat that looks like a dressing gown and comes to some arrangement...

Birdbrained13 · 25/09/2025 18:06

I’m actually seriously tempted by this … it comes in green too which my husband said would make me look like Churchill in his war room 😭

I wear my pyjamas and dressing gown for the early stint at work and then have a shower and get dressed later. Sometimes I wear a long sleeved wrap dress over the pyjamas. It acts as a dressing gown but I look dressed. I have a few of these.

Birdbrained13 · 25/09/2025 18:27

Well it was only a joke … 🙄

UpMyself · 25/09/2025 18:29

@Birdbrained13 I know, but it was fun imagining what you might look like.Smile

I'm constantly on the hunt for a corporate dressing gown. Cardigans and thick jumpers don't keep your legs warm and Oodies are unprofessional (well, the patterns I have are). I think we're fruitlessly searching for the same thing.

Sweatshirt dress

May I present the merino cashmere dressing gown / longline wrap cardigan from Woolovers?

It’s £89 (may also have a sign up / first order discount) and comes in good neutral colours. It doesn’t have a collar or hood, so it looks like a cardi from the waist up if you have to be on a call.

100% need to bring back house coats!

Yes!! @WildCherryBlossom
id love a house coat. Sounds much more grown up and dressed, than a dressing gown!
especially when said in a NI accent (only my norn Irish friends say house coat!)

I'm loving this thread .Can't get enough of lounge/nightwear and bag threads .

I'm picturing @incognitomummy and family living in their Shetland croft ,sans heating and dressed in their jumpsuits with flask pocket on the leg and
Rear exit zipper for easy bathroom breaks topped off by an oodie .

The rear zipper is rather handy to avoid getting cold…… can get a bit chilly 🥶 in the bathroom in a traditional onesie!!

tonight the 13yo has gone to bed in a velvet onesie with their oodie over the top!!!! A protest at not turning the heating on yet!

id understand it if there was snow outside but the temperature has only gone down to 15 degrees today!!!

Hashbrownsandcheese · 25/09/2025 22:55

M&S had a few last year but I haven't seen any on their website yet. How about a long fleece?

Humptydumptie · 25/09/2025 23:13

I get what you mean OP but come autumn/winter won’t you want something on your legs?

I know about being up & working & then not formally dressed but needing to get the door etc & feel bad I look like am still in pjs!

cygnusgenie · 25/09/2025 23:32

I just pull on trackies and a sweat shirt. Basically pyjamas, but just about count as real clothes. Have 3 or 4 different trackie bottoms

LillyPJ · 26/09/2025 06:17

Surely, the best solution is to change your routine so you shower and get dressed before you sit down at the computer? You'll feel more alert and ready to work and won't have the dressing gown problem.

NewPersonHere · 26/09/2025 07:41

You’re looking for a duster jacket. Please do get changed.

NarnianQueen · 26/09/2025 07:43

I had a longish wool hooded cardigan I wore every single day in winter for this very reason - to the point it ended up falling apart. Must get another one!
