Is DD right about this dress? (Light-hearted)

https://joanieclothing.com/celia-birtwell-x-joanie-golden-slumbers-flared-sleeve-ruffle-neck-wrap-dress.html

I bought this for various Christmas parties. I love it, having a weakness for hippyish, Stevie Nicks-in-the-1970s getups. My daughter (8, sarcastic, only prepared to wear black leggings) made a horrified face on seeing it. Which of us is right? (In case it helps, I'm slim and pretty flat, so the volumising effect of the ruffle isn't too problematic to my eye).

I actually really like that. Sadly it's only available in an 8 so that rules me out

ChocolateCinderToffee · 20/09/2025 17:14

I’m with your daughter.

The same way I know the world is round and bears shit in the woods.

I'm certain you are right, but alas I don't have access to her costume designer. Maybe one day I'll get to go wild in an exclusive LA vintage shop and embarrass my daughter even more...

To be honest I thought the same, someone is trying to sell them on here so keeps popping up recommending them as way of free advertising, they are a little known brand whose clothes the nicest thing you can say are an acquired taste.

Its very much a marmite brand isnt it?
I love their stuff and tend to recommend it coz I really dont like/cant afford many other brands.
Def not for the classic, neutrals dresser though!😄

DailyEnergyCrisis · 20/09/2025 17:45

Not my thing but id enjoy seeing someone else wear it.

ItsNotYou852 · 20/09/2025 17:49

Oh yes! As an old hippy I love it... pay no attention to the naysayers, rock your inner hippy chick!

Mimilamore · 20/09/2025 17:51

I love it….

Florencesndzebedee · 20/09/2025 17:51

Yes, definitely a Celia Birtwell look.

CicerosHead · 20/09/2025 18:00

It's certainly a vibe. I hate 70s shapes and prints, but if you're into that period - then this certainly a good choice. And compared to most of other Joanie dresses, this one isn't so bad, definitely not the worst.

Looked at some other dresses and saw the Christina Hendricks collection, now that stuff is truly horrible.

Also, second the Little Lies. They some 70s stuff, more Stevie Nicks-ish than this.

MyElatedUmberFinch · 20/09/2025 18:04

I thought I disliked it when I first saw it and then I had another look and can see this would look good on especially as you are slim.

martinisforeveryone · 20/09/2025 18:06

It's not a dress I'd look at because it wouldn't suit my shape or colouring, but it sounds made for you @ShiningShimmeringSplendid and I'd imagine it looks better on than in the advert or their choice of model. Wear it for party season and have fun.

Moveoverdarlin · 20/09/2025 18:08

Yeah sorry, I think it’s bloody awful.

Growlybear83 · 20/09/2025 18:10

I think your daughter is right. And I’m not convinced that dress is something that Stevie Nicks would ever have worn 🤣🤣

DustyMaiden · 20/09/2025 18:12

I always think it’s strange when the model is in a scrunched up pose so you can’t see how the dress hangs.

ToldYouTwiceAlready · 20/09/2025 18:14

It's so ugly. Wear it if YOU like it.

Alittlefrustrated · 20/09/2025 18:39

Looks lovely on the model. If you are slum and flat chested it's a winner

BunnyLake · 20/09/2025 18:46

Thelankyone · 20/09/2025 17:04

Um I mean this politely but stevia nicks doesn’t wear Joanie clothing or anything like it.

Gosh really?

walkingismedicine · 20/09/2025 18:50

I like it!

QueenOfCastille · 20/09/2025 19:00

I love it. Sadly, I'm the wrong shape and colour to wear it.

NeverCouldGetTheHangOfThursdays · 20/09/2025 19:35

I love it! It's just my kind of style and it'd look fab with boots.
Also, I wasn't familiar with Joanie until now so thank you for introducing me!

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 20/09/2025 19:36

It's absolutely fabulous, I love it.

WeeGeeBored · 20/09/2025 19:44

I really love it! And I don’t usually like this kind of style.

Pinkissmart · 20/09/2025 19:45

I wish I could pull that off!

usedtobeaylis · 20/09/2025 19:47

It's not my cup of tea but I can imagine the kind of person that would carry it off so if that's you it'll be incredible!

My daughter and I have very different ideas on clothes too, I'm sure that will always be the case 😆

To be honest I thought the same, someone is trying to sell them on here so keeps popping up recommending them as way of free advertising, they are a little known brand whose clothes the nicest thing you can say are an acquired taste.

It's a perfectly wearable dress. I'd wear it for a pub lunch or similar. I don't know why posters are saying it's bonkers/ nowhere to wear it.

As for free advertising Phase 8 is mostly absolutely hideous
"occasion" dresses which would make
me cry if I were forced to leave the house wearing them.Dancing Leopard and Yumi are the same they're constantly being pushed on here. Are they getting free advertising?
