Is DD right about this dress? (Light-hearted)

https://joanieclothing.com/celia-birtwell-x-joanie-golden-slumbers-flared-sleeve-ruffle-neck-wrap-dress.html

I bought this for various Christmas parties. I love it, having a weakness for hippyish, Stevie Nicks-in-the-1970s getups. My daughter (8, sarcastic, only prepared to wear black leggings) made a horrified face on seeing it. Which of us is right? (In case it helps, I'm slim and pretty flat, so the volumising effect of the ruffle isn't too problematic to my eye).

I love it! If I were not awaiting the arrival of two Joe Brown dresses I would buy it myself.

Strawber · 20/09/2025 20:07

It’s giving Jamie Lee Curtis in Freaky Friday

Grammarnut · 20/09/2025 22:21

I don't like it and I wear some pretty bizarre things - I think it's the colour (reminds me of sick, sorry). But if you like it wear it. 8 year old's fashion sense is nil.

Denim4ever · 20/09/2025 22:26

Biba vibes, I love it

Not my thing but id enjoy seeing someone else wear it.

Same here! I'm likely to collar you in passing to admire your style 😄 That would be because I love a Full On outfit, but haven't been able to carry one off myself since my anorexic teens. Dresses like this make me resemble Kellie Maloney (look him up if you've been spared the pleasure) rather than an exuberant celebration of creative femininity! Wear and enjoy, OP.

Katflapkit · 21/09/2025 03:06

I love it. I think it looks better on the model than in the initial photograph. By the description of your body type - I think you will look stunning.

mathanxiety · 21/09/2025 03:22

I'd wear it to a Hallowe'en party.

Like a PP I like the style, but I think the colours and pattern are not great.

Ooh sorry I’m with your 8 year old but if it suits your style and personality then I’m sure it will look good on you.

This!

Floisme · 21/09/2025 05:58

It made me smile when I opened the link. It’s not really my thing but, if I saw it in a shop, I’d try it on just for the hell of it. (I wouldn’t order it online just to try, which is a shame and partly why I find internet shopping less fun, but that’s for another thread.) If I saw someone wearing it, I’d admire it and ask where it was from.

TwinklyNight · 21/09/2025 06:11

I think it is a dress that will look really good on.

Itwasallyellow2 · 21/09/2025 06:15

Love it! I would really envy anyone with this style.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 21/09/2025 06:40

@ShiningShimmeringSplendid bloody hell!! that is hideous and I am 70 not 8!!!! dont even remember anyone wearing something like that in the 70's!

bluewhitebluewhite · 21/09/2025 07:06

I love it! And I generally steer clear of patterns but this is great.

luckylavender · 21/09/2025 07:16

Love it

LillyPJ · 21/09/2025 07:36

I think it's lovely but the sleeves would annoy me always drooping in my dinner. I had a jumper with wide sleeves and used to put a hair band round each wrist to prevent such mishaps.

DinoLil · 21/09/2025 07:39

Ooooh, I love it! Your DD will probably say she doesn't like whatever you wear tbh.

Pinkclarko · 21/09/2025 07:46

It’s funny because someone could post a picture of a dress covered in dicks on here and there’ll always be at least one person who’ll come on to say they rather like it 😁And that demonstrates how subjective it all is.

I don’t think this dress is meant to look like a faithful reproduction of a 70’s dress, and Celia Birtwell is known for throwing together odd/incongruent patterns (she dressed the cast of SATC) and that’s the aim I think. A bit like irregular choice shoes or other weird brands. It takes a bit of window dressing to make these things work; you can’t just throw it on an expect it to look good.

some things on here like Toast, I keep looking at the links to see what it is I’m not getting but I’ll never understand the appeal. I think I might appreciate it if styled well on someone who suits it though.

Had too much coffee and rambling. That’s my two cents anyway! 😁

LemonTwix · 21/09/2025 08:16

I like it, but I love that kind of 1970s look and Celia Birtwell. I couldn’t wear it myself, the sleeves would be way too long and flappy.

PeanutGallerist · 21/09/2025 09:01

@Pinkclarko - actually I’d say that’s an easy dress to throw on and look good! It doesn’t need decorating, or a special hair do, or make up. Pretty much any ankle or knee height boots. Would look great under a big wool coat.

(And I completely don’t understand all the stuff about having to be tall, or thin, or this or that chested; it’s a dress that deflects attention from the body underneath.)

Thelankyone · 21/09/2025 09:21

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 20/09/2025 19:51

It's a perfectly wearable dress. I'd wear it for a pub lunch or similar. I don't know why posters are saying it's bonkers/ nowhere to wear it.

As for free advertising Phase 8 is mostly absolutely hideous
"occasion" dresses which would make
me cry if I were forced to leave the house wearing them.Dancing Leopard and Yumi are the same they're constantly being pushed on here. Are they getting free advertising?

Those are main stream brands, joanie is not, I’d never even heard of them till I came on here, and see them regularly pushed. Joanie is a small British company. So small they are even exempt from audit. Hardly a company to mention in the same breath as phase 8.

chunkybear · 21/09/2025 09:25

It’s like two dresses have been merged into one dress, too much for me, I’m a bit more boring in my wardrobe
lol … and I hate spots

TheLeadbetterLife · 21/09/2025 09:27

I normally like that sort of thing, but for some reason this one's not working for me. There's something a bit off in the colours and patterns I think.

BunnyLake · 21/09/2025 09:56

The ironic thing with people saying they hate it, have you seen some of the stuff that gets offered up on S&B? A more hideous collection of suggestions you’d be hard to find. 😁

MidnightMeltdown · 21/09/2025 10:11

Your daughter is right IMO, but if you like it, wear it! Maybe just don’t wear it to parents evening…
