Is DD right about this dress? (Light-hearted)

https://joanieclothing.com/celia-birtwell-x-joanie-golden-slumbers-flared-sleeve-ruffle-neck-wrap-dress.html

I bought this for various Christmas parties. I love it, having a weakness for hippyish, Stevie Nicks-in-the-1970s getups. My daughter (8, sarcastic, only prepared to wear black leggings) made a horrified face on seeing it. Which of us is right? (In case it helps, I'm slim and pretty flat, so the volumising effect of the ruffle isn't too problematic to my eye).

That dress is awful. Your kid is clearly wise beyond her years.

bigwhitedog · 20/09/2025 13:06

Send it back 🙈

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 20/09/2025 13:07

Sorry @ShiningShimmeringSplendid I am with your dd. Personally I really dont like it. However, I am not the one buying and wearing it, and assuming you are slender, tall and blonde it will probably look great.

Your daughter is 8! Why are you even considering her opinion when deciding what you want to wear?

Lighthearted thread, in the title.

Peoplepleaserincrisis · 20/09/2025 13:15

I'm very hippy-dippy and I LOVE it! Would slot right into my wardrobe!

FeliciaFancybottom · 20/09/2025 13:22

It's awful, the sleeves are so random and give the impression that they ran out of the main fabric and had to make do.

Zempy · 20/09/2025 13:23

It’s a bit Abigail’s Party but I love it!!

Lanva · 20/09/2025 13:23

I LOVE it!

PeanutGallerist · 20/09/2025 13:25

I’ve never bought anything from Joanie, but I’ve liked that dress well enough to have recommended it to people, here and in real life.

What it is to be young and entirely free of knowledge! As @IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle suggests, you would be wise to inform your daughter of Celia Birtwell’s rich artistic history.

This book might help:

Or Celia Birtwell’s own book. Or the internet.

greengagesummers · 20/09/2025 13:26

Eeep! I agree with your DD, sorry!

EggyBreads · 20/09/2025 13:30

my fashion choices can have a hippy vibe and I absolutely love it. Don’t listen to your daughter!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 20/09/2025 13:43

I like it! But I am old enough to remember this style the first time. Makes a changrd from tiered gingham!

Pinkclarko · 20/09/2025 13:43

The first picture does it no favours but I reckon it looks nice IRL. Could deffo style it out with some nice boots and stuff. Do it!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 20/09/2025 13:46

I like it! I could never wear it, being small and grey and stumpy I would look as though I'd wrapped myself in a duvet and needed to be taken home by Kind People. But on someone taller with the right colouring it would look amazing!

It's the kind of dress my (taller, slimmer, and more outgoing) youngest daughter would wear and look fabulous.

ShiningShimmeringSplendid · 20/09/2025 13:47

To be clear, I certainly don't let my daughter (or anyone else) veto my clothes. I was just amused by her vociferous reaction and wondered whether S&B would agree with her. I love the dress and frankly think I look great in it (I am pretty slim - size 8 without much curve - and with my vintage 70s boots I can pass for tall). I stalked it online for ages before taking the plunge - it just sang to me! But her reaction made me realise it was a bit more of a Marmite outfit than I had appreciated through the prism of my own taste. This thread has definitely confirmed that.

Yeah she’s right (sorry). But remember young fashion is minimalist atm so if that’s not your style I wouldn’t go out of your way to please

MrsMitford3 · 20/09/2025 13:51

I was prepared to be horrified but I like it. Fun and festive.

My DD went through a brutal stage around age 5 where she was very "candid" about my clothes-remember coming downstairs ready to go to a black tie event and called down before she could see me and said "I'm definitely wearing this"
Her attire at the time consisted of fairy wings and frocks and disapproved of black and brown clothing. 😂

AlanJohnsonsBeemer · 20/09/2025 13:53

I really like it!

YumYa · 20/09/2025 13:56

fluffiphlox · 20/09/2025 12:01

If you like it wear it! (I like the look of this sort of thing but when I try them on I look like I’ve escaped from some institution in my nightie.)

😅

Sassylovesbooks · 20/09/2025 13:58

Personally, I love it! I like quirky clothes and the bolder colours and patterns. As long as you like it, then that's all that matters!

OK, now that you’ve clarified: it’s a very ugly dress, BUT the ugliness is intentional and made a virtue. I don’t like it and I wouldn’t wear it but I’d rather see that than something which tried to be classic or pretty and somehow missed the mark.

nellietheellie75 · 20/09/2025 14:01

I think it's hideous. But as long as you like it, go for it.

Dippythedino · 20/09/2025 14:04

Team DD all the way here, I like the shape but not the print. If that dress was in black, silver or gold sequins, it would be amazing.

ThatCyanCat · 20/09/2025 14:09

It's a bonkers Joanie dress, you don't wear it for safe, universal approval. If you like it, rock the bonkers Joanieness right out of it.
