Is DD right about this dress? (Light-hearted)

https://joanieclothing.com/celia-birtwell-x-joanie-golden-slumbers-flared-sleeve-ruffle-neck-wrap-dress.html

I bought this for various Christmas parties. I love it, having a weakness for hippyish, Stevie Nicks-in-the-1970s getups. My daughter (8, sarcastic, only prepared to wear black leggings) made a horrified face on seeing it. Which of us is right? (In case it helps, I'm slim and pretty flat, so the volumising effect of the ruffle isn't too problematic to my eye).

Oh no OP 🙈. Looks like something you'd wear to a fancy dress party

MercyChant66 · 20/09/2025 14:12

I love it! Wish I had the shape and confidence for this - if you think you look great in it then you obviously do. Perfect festive dress for your colouring, shape and general vibe!

Puppylucky · 20/09/2025 12:21

Your daughter is 8! Why are you even considering her opinion when deciding what you want to wear?

This.
I'm rubbish at telling from pictures what things will look like on a person, but I definitely don't hate it!

Overtheatlantic · 20/09/2025 14:16

I love it. Wear with boots in the winter and sandals in the summer. Very retro in a Diane von Furstenburg way.

IchiNiSanShiGo · 20/09/2025 14:20

I think my 9 yr old DD would probably have the same reaction as yours 😂

It’s not my style at all, but I can see why you’d like it. Wear it, enjoy it, ignore the “god mum, you’re so embarrassing” attitude 😆

Hoppinggreen · 20/09/2025 14:22

I don't like it but I am not the one wearing it so if you like it crack on

BoarBrush · 20/09/2025 14:35

Your dd is a wise girl.

warmapplepies · 20/09/2025 14:36

It’s hideous.

Nellieinthebarn · 20/09/2025 14:36

In my experience whatever you wear will be 'wrong' at best, and 'hideously embarrassing you will make her a social outcast', at worst, for a good few years yet. I'm sorry OP, but its the way of daughters.

Olivene · 20/09/2025 14:38

I love it! Wouldn't wear as not my colours, but I feel like only someone who was very conventional about dress or style-chasing could think it was particularly unusual.

henlake7 · 20/09/2025 14:39

Gorgeous, love it! I love most of the Joanie Celia Birtwell range but sadly dont really have anywhere to wear it.
Hopefully your DD is just going through a phase and wont grow up to become a 'greige only' wearer!😂

TotalDramarama24 · 20/09/2025 14:43

I love it! It wouldn’t suit my shape but I would definitely buy it if I was tall and slim.

GRCP · 20/09/2025 14:45

Love it

Pollqueen · 20/09/2025 14:46

I like it, but could never wear it because it wouldn't suit my body type but if you're tall, slim and with a small but it will look great. 8 year olds have crap taste anyway

Eisas · 20/09/2025 14:46

Oh. I like the style but the colours are awful.

Pollqueen · 20/09/2025 14:47

Small bust, not but!

ThatCyanCat · 20/09/2025 14:48

Eisas · 20/09/2025 14:46

Oh. I like the style but the colours are awful.

If you like the style, Joanie does quite a lot of dresses like that in different colours and patterns. It is a bit of a bonkers place though. That's kind of its thing.

TheOGCCL · 20/09/2025 14:50

You’d really stand out in my world even at a Christmas party but I admire people who know what they like. Don’t ruin it now by worrying what anyone else thinks.

GameOfJones · 20/09/2025 14:53

I really like it! Fashion is a funny thing. I often see absolutely hideous clothes recommended on here but really like that dress. Others clearly think differently.

It would be boring if we were all the same! Go and rock it.

Mumwithbaggage · 20/09/2025 14:57

I've had it in my basket more than once then deleted it - I love it and a Stevie Nicks vibe but in reality, I'm more robust rural woman of a certain age.

StasisMom · 20/09/2025 15:02

I like it - it is individual and I love mustard.

NotToday1l · 20/09/2025 15:05

ShiningShimmeringSplendid · 20/09/2025 13:47

To be clear, I certainly don't let my daughter (or anyone else) veto my clothes. I was just amused by her vociferous reaction and wondered whether S&B would agree with her. I love the dress and frankly think I look great in it (I am pretty slim - size 8 without much curve - and with my vintage 70s boots I can pass for tall). I stalked it online for ages before taking the plunge - it just sang to me! But her reaction made me realise it was a bit more of a Marmite outfit than I had appreciated through the prism of my own taste. This thread has definitely confirmed that.

don’t like it but don’t hate it either, it’s a bit meh…..maybe if you have long blond hair it would be nice

I would never wear it

diddl · 20/09/2025 15:05

If your daughter only wears black leggings I would say that pretty much rules out her opinion!

That & the fact that she's 8 & sarcastic.

Notmyreality · 20/09/2025 15:08

Puppylucky · 20/09/2025 12:21

Your daughter is 8! Why are you even considering her opinion when deciding what you want to wear?

Because in this instance she seems to have more taste then OP?

Notmyreality · 20/09/2025 15:09

warmapplepies · 20/09/2025 14:36

It’s hideous.

Agreed.
