Is DD right about this dress? (Light-hearted)

https://joanieclothing.com/celia-birtwell-x-joanie-golden-slumbers-flared-sleeve-ruffle-neck-wrap-dress.html

I bought this for various Christmas parties. I love it, having a weakness for hippyish, Stevie Nicks-in-the-1970s getups. My daughter (8, sarcastic, only prepared to wear black leggings) made a horrified face on seeing it. Which of us is right? (In case it helps, I'm slim and pretty flat, so the volumising effect of the ruffle isn't too problematic to my eye).

OP posts:

I have loads of Joanne dresses. Love them and get never ending compliments any time I wear em,

BaronessBomburst · 20/09/2025 15:20

That dress is absolutely gorgeous! I love it.

Thelankyone · 20/09/2025 15:29

To be honest , that brand do some horrific items, in crap fabrics, elegant isn’t something it aspires to, and dated and cheap looking seems to be its bi line, but that’s not the worst I’ve seen them do.

However I’m with your daughter. With the caveat it could have been worse.

Minniliscious · 20/09/2025 15:33

Ewwww

Emanwenym · 20/09/2025 15:42

If that's bonkers I'm glad you've not seen my clothes.
OP, this is MN. Get yourself a nice flattering wrap dress instead. Smile

ACR7 · 20/09/2025 15:49

I like it

BernardButlersBra · 20/09/2025 16:09

Love it! What's the sizing like? Snug like most Joanie dresses?

Emanwenym · 20/09/2025 16:13

Me too. I wouldn't wear it because the sleeves would annoy me, and I think it's viscose or something but I love the idea, and that it's different.

The model is wearing a size 16, so I think it's one where you might need to order a larger size than usual.

AhBiscuits · 20/09/2025 16:23

My face went into an involuntary grimace when I clicked the link. It makes the model look pregnant.

XiCi · 20/09/2025 16:40

It's very Margot Leadbetter from The Good Life. If that's the look you're going for then all power to you

I love it! I too have a weakness for a Stevie Nicks hippy vibe. I’d wear it with boots too just like Stevie would.

Hallywally · 20/09/2025 16:41

Oh god it’s hideous, very 70s! I hate 70s clothes but if you love that vibe, go for it!

This is also what I think. Their dresses are always linked to on here and im always taken aback by how awful they are. I've wondered whether the posts are just joanie marketing via Mumsnet because I cant imagine who would wear their clothes and I meet a lot of people of all different ages and walks of life through work

SlashBeef · 20/09/2025 16:50

I would look horrendous in it. I think you need a Princess of Wales willowy-ness to pull it off. It's not offensive though, just very busy.

Househassles · 20/09/2025 16:53

Neither of you is wrong. You picked a dress you like for yourself and for the occasion, she made a face but didn't comment or say something rude or try to talk you out of it.

However, I'm a little worried that the site has flagged this dress under "Sustainability" as "made from natural wood fibers". It's 100% viscose and while yes, the raw materials are plant fibers, the process of transforming the raw materials into fabric is horrifically environmentally unsound. I'm less worried about the fabric - one rayon dress won't trigger armageddon - and more about the greenwashing.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 20/09/2025 17:02

I love joanie as a brand, I've had some beautiful clothes from them but I think I pulled the same face as your daughter at this dress. Sorry!

GlastoNinja · 20/09/2025 17:02

I really like it. A lot of people are funny about things from here, because it’s not the mainstream stuff you get in next or Dorothy Perkins

Um I mean this politely but stevia nicks doesn’t wear Joanie clothing or anything like it.

Jamesblonde2 · 20/09/2025 17:04

I don’t mind the style but the colour is very unflattering..

No dont listen to everyone saying it’s awful. I actually love it!!!!

To be honest I thought the same, someone is trying to sell them on here so keeps popping up recommending them as way of free advertising, they are a little known brand whose clothes the nicest thing you can say are an acquired taste.

The same way I know the world is round and bears shit in the woods.
