Summer shoes to replace white trainers

What do people wear these days?? I always wear Superga white trainers or Van type slip on trainers but I'm not sure things are going to cut it this year. I don't like the clumpy strappy sandals. Any ideas?

Slightly off track but am putting in a word for fisherman's sandals. I have long skinny legs and I love 'em. They're cool, comfy, look great with midis and widelegs and make me feel grounded. Nuts to "fashion", you'll have to prise em off me!

Ruthietuthie · 30/03/2025 21:14

@WoolerOwl, thank you! Your kind words made my whole day. I lost a lot of weight recently, plus moved into a much bigger role at work, so I have been trying to be really thoughtful about how I want to dress and what I need in my wardrobe. I really appreciate it.

u3ername · 30/03/2025 21:21

Just bought fresh new pair of white trainers. I’m 44 and look older than my age, but that’s before you look down at what shoes I wear…

Fibrous · 30/03/2025 21:53

This thread has been great for confirming that I’ll be wearing my white trainers to the grave. None of these other options would work for me and my hideous bunioned hobbit feet. Fashion be damned.

ReggaetonLente · 30/03/2025 22:21

I wear Keen Uneeks, Nike Air Rift and Tevas. Not everyone’s cup of tea I know but that’s been my summer shoe line up for a couple of years now.

Onafp · 30/03/2025 23:25

I have a pair of pink Gazelles - are they acceptable this year?

Read the Telegraph to find out.

I am wearing silver NBs and bright blue Pumas this summer.

Retro style trainers, or those boxer-style, are in just now. I think loafers, and deck-shoe styles are in just now, as are clogs. Backless trainers, mule-style, are gaining popularity I think. Or just get the toe nails sorted and get your toes out, lol.

I had to look to see what they are - ugly as sin and what we used to wear 65 years ago as toddlers (by Start-Rite?)

I have resisted the fashion for ugly shoes and love shoes and am in my fifties. So no Birkenstocks, crocs or UGGs for me. My 18y has all of these though 🙄😏
I wear ballet flats or Mary Janes. If I am walking anywhere, then I ensure I wear ones that have a bit more support than the flimsy more ‘stylish’ ones.

A bit late to the thread but I am constantly reading that leopard print works as a neutral shoe and a quick Google reveals a lot of trainer options. My feet get cold without a sock so sandals are only for the hottest days. (I have never owned anything in leopard print, maybe a shoe is the place to start.)

This is the Style & Beauty board. Presumably the OP has asked the question here because they are interested in what is currently considered stylish/in fashion.

Why are so many posters asking why it matters or why does the OP care what others think? It’s Style & Beauty. That’s the whole point.

I agree.

I'm 52 and love fashion. I don't dress like a 18 year old but I get bored and like to try new things.

I'm quote fussy with footwear but I'm liking the clogs and gazelles which I'll get this year.

HolidayHappy123 · 31/03/2025 10:30

How about a backless loafer?

I like some of these too.

I was late to the white trainer party and only bought some last summer. I'm not trashing a perfectly good pair of shoes because someone decides they are "too middle aged". I think the current youth fashion of track suit bottoms tucked into socks with sliders looks absolutely idiotic but I can leave them alone if they leave me alone

I'm with you on this; it might make me old fashioned but I just don't get the trackies tucked into white socks look; it's hideous, and with sliders?! Ugh!! I think it's just a case of wear what you want, if that look is in fashion!

littlestrawberryhat · 31/03/2025 10:46

I don’t think they’re “out”- i think that look has become almost timeless in a way. As you say there are no alternatives! I think a white canvas trainer/plimsoll with summer clothes is pretty timeless. If you want to update how about a bright adidas trainer? Boat shoes/loafers are having a bit of a moment. Massimo dutti have some very good summer shoes in- they have some little woven leather shoes that are almost trainers that could work for you?

I love a bit of animal print. I got these off amazon, Rykers, they do half sizes and wide fit. I wouldn't wear with these joggers but they look lovely with wide leg or bootcut trousers.
They are just so comfortable.

Wedge espadriles, or a loafer.

Something like these…

I like the ones in the third photo with the sort of knot - where are those from, please?

And with all the love for TOMS ,does anyone know if the toe boxes are wide enough for people with corns/squashed little toes?!

They were Next. Not sure if they have them this season. Plenty on Vinted. Mine are Navy.

Lioncubhearted · 31/03/2025 12:21

@Gundogday do those blue sandals you linked go with dark(ish) blue jeans and also with black jeans?

jellyfishperiwinkle · 31/03/2025 12:25

My feet are quite flat so trainers or fitflops have the best arch support or I can insert arch support insoles. Glad that there are stylish comfortable shoes available. Birkenstocks and ballet flats are a disaster for my feet- I got plantar fasciitis in the mid 2010s ballet flats trend.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 31/03/2025 12:27

These are the trainers my 20 year old fashionista daughter wears with dresses/skirts or jeans. Trying very hard not to copy as I love them (but the sole is a bit too thin for me).

jellyfishperiwinkle · 31/03/2025 12:30

I have these anyway - not white, light blue, for extra originality 😅

Bit more bounce in the sole for the flat of foot.

Blue jeans yes. I wouldn’t wear it with black jeans.

I had a red pair a couple of years ago, and that was more neutral.
