What do you mean "acceptable"?
It's a bit early to say now but as of last summer pretty much every single teen/twenty something i saw in the UK and abroad was still wearing trainers with dresses (albeit with socks pulled up which seems to be the generational divider!)
It's more that the overall "flowery midi, white trainers with trainer/no socks and denim jacket" outfit became so ubiquious c. 2020 that its no longer the peak of current trendiness (as you'd expect 5 years later) but that doesn't mean that ALL dresses and trainers combos are as dead as the perm and shoulder suits - there are so many variations it's just become a basic look now, like denim shorts or a black dress or something - different cuts are more popular at different times but the overall concept of a dress and trainers is neither in nor out.
So you could update it by trying a different cut/style of dress. Brightly coloured, retro style trainers with the gummy soles rather than white ones. Knit/Crochet cardi/jumper rather than denim jacket, etc.
Also if you're NOT a teenager/twenty something, do you even want to follow the exact same trends as them? I'd rather look good for a thirty odd year old than as if I'm desperately trying to dress 10 years younger. So I adapt some trends and leave others.
E.g. I've always preferred longer socks so like that one (albeit its not the most flattering), and loved the cross over bag trend. Wear a "slim mom" style jean as a compromise between going full boyfriend baggy and stick with skinnies, etc. I like the fisherman/dm sandals even though they are objectively hideous because I'm short and clumpy shoes add an inch or two to my height, and the ones i have are really comfy.
however i am not up for crop tops and despite everyone under 30 wearing them absolutely hate the socks n' crocs look and would rather be mocked as an out of touch millennial than put them near my feet!
