Thanks *fromthevault. That’s really helpful. I’ll try get some samples of the Fragrantica suggestions. I doubt I’ll be able to get to try them where I live. Generally I really dislike jasmine but loved the Givenchy .

TheLongRider · 10/03/2025 18:00

Aziyade today, I was doing a lot of physical work and I wanted something to complement it.

What was your smoky spicy scent? I like the sound of that.

The OG smoky spicy scent for me is probably Byredo Mumbai Noise. Annoyingly the bottle is lost at sea somewhere in my messy room so I'm missing it - a sign from the gods to do a sort out I think ( I was planning a de clutter)

smoky but perhaps not so spicy for me is Bois D'Ebene - it's very woody and deep. Probably does fall somewhere near that category.

I sold most of the grand discovery kit last year when I had it (I was unemployed so couldn't really afford the 180) but that means I didn't get to try many of the samples, now that ebay have stopped letting people sell the 2ml byredos this means I'd be forced to work my way through the set -no bad thing!
As a house I have slightly gone off byredo, not gone off it so much as got interested in other brands/houses more. So maybe I'll leave getting the set.

Matiere Premiere Vanilla Powder today - I'm in the mood for a sweet, uplifting vanilla. Used the Zara Vanilla Immortalle which is a dupe but not as long lasting, as a body spray and a bit of the VP on top.

I'm impressed with the lack of buying - I need to take a leaf out of your book as I really do feel a bit addicted sometimes and I'm finding it hard to shift some of the boxes and sets I've bought on ebay - the big bottles in particular are slow to go. I definitely think it's replaced food for me since I've been on weight loss jabs - a well known phenomenon apparently!

Edited

You are so good in selling things you won't use, if you enjoy it why not? I was inspired by you and sold so many I won't use but long term I prefer buying less and using more. The advents were bit overload - and I end up keeping very little from them but made most of the money I paid back from selling what I don't want to keep.

I also find when I am constancy trying new things, I don't get the proper enjoyment of the things I have - and buying less at this stage is allowing me to enjoy the things I accumulated over the last few years.

MrsBnow12 · 10/03/2025 21:38

@IDontHateRainbows Interesting in what you say re weight loss jabs and perfumes, I too have been on jabs and over the last 6-9 months become really interested in perfumes and scents.
I read this board most days and love reading all the different perfumes you all use and have been inspired to buy a few sample sized based on it.

It's a really interesting phenomenon.. I was not all that into perfumes before last autumn when I started on mj. I was definitely a foodie and used to constantly snack or graze, now I don't snack at all and I've got over 50 sample sizes ( usually 10ml) of Perfume and 4 full bottles!

I've lost nearly 2 stone tho so quite happy with the 'swap'. And the money I'm spending on perfume I am saving on money spent on junk food and eating out so probably spending no more!

I don't know why I though of vanilla vibes this morning JHAG, a perfume I don't have. I sprayed little of ex vetiver on one wrist and juliette has a gun on another.

I am surprised how much I liked Ex Vetiver. I see it compared to bal d'afrique - not for me but it does have citrus and vetiver - very distant similarity in end result. Also clean vibe form musk and ambroxan. Juliette is very sweet to my nose, very familiar perfumey shampoo scent. It reminds me little of the Tatziana Terrenzi (harrods advent) Superba Rossa but not as intense and some of the Fame perfumes when it dries down, fruitier and sweeter than I expected.

I don't see myself adding them to wish list but I will enjoy & use the travels.

I am going with Clean Reserve Skin- as scent of the day.

IDontHateRainbows · 11/03/2025 07:23

I've never massively got in to JHAG but have a sample of vanilla vibes, it's nice but a bit too summery/ beachy for now. Maybe later in the year.

Tempted to wear babylon today . I do love it, perfect blend of vanilla and spice.

I found the long lost mumbai noise. Strange considering how much I absolutely loved it in the autumn, now it's just OK. Quite heavy and oud-y to my nose. Maybe it's the changing of the seasons?but it's not hitting the spot like it once did.

I'm using &Other Stories Perfect Pistachio as a body wash atm.

Top notes: Pistachio Nuts, Warm Milk, Hazelnut

Mid notes: White Chocolate, Ambroxan, Amber

Base notes: Candied Vanilla, Sandalwood, Creamy Musks

It works well as a base for layering other perfumes with similar notes over the top. It mostly smells of musk and sandalwood, the nut scent is fleeting.

CorneliaStreet · 11/03/2025 19:28

Trying Shay & Blue Rhubarb and Sandalwood for the first time today. Think this might be love at first sniff! The longevity of most S&B perfumes is a bit rubbish but this one is lasting pretty well, particularly for a rhubarb scent.

SabrinaPrune · 11/03/2025 21:17

Hello. Was around at the start of the year and got distracted.

If anyone is bored I’ve got samples from the 4160s January box to swap/give:

never going to use: a little less conversation, flawed fern, barnes 7 after party, invite me in, while we are asleep, so long see you honey, London linden.

would love more of: metaphysic, absolute filth, choose the bear, shadowed veil and chocolate ginger.

currently working my way through an apparently never ending sample of Fille de Berlin before exploring other roses (thanks to people who recommended ones on the last thread, I’ve got them written down)

Magpiecomplex · 11/03/2025 21:20

You're welcome to Bear and Veil from my set, @SabrinaPrune, and I liked Barnes 7. I'm not sharing my Absolute Filth though, that's definitely the one I'd buy a full bottle of if they release it.

RosesAndHellebores · 11/03/2025 21:23

I hope on very occasionally and am by no means an expert but I have, a couple of weeks running, had a squirt of M&S's Aegean Rose. It lasts and is rather charming. A steal for £16 with a handbag atomiser thrown in.

MiaN · 12/03/2025 06:11

Vanilla Vibes is definitely summer. I am away to the canaries end of next week, the reason. I thought of it. I used few samples.

I think I will go with tocca colette again today.

MiaN · 12/03/2025 06:14

Some intersted sounding new releases

I would love to try replica forever summer -aperol notes? Guerlain aqua allegoria sounds like green fresh rose. Few others I can't think of right now

MiaN · 12/03/2025 06:19

Oh another I would like to smell is armsni prive iris blue or something like this.

IDontHateRainbows · 12/03/2025 07:33

Definitely gone off the Mumbai Noise - this is why it's never a good idea for me to get full bottles. Scent of the day is - hmmmm - so many to choose from - going to go with DS and Durga Pistachio. It's a grower - at first I wasn't sure about the patchouli element which is quite strong. Too many memories of patchouli joss sticks trying to hide the smell of weed in my friend's hippie boyfriend's house as a teen! But I have given patchouli another chance and in small amounts blended well it's a welcome ingredient.

Le labo, another 13. Loveee. I read online someone described it as smelling like 'the sweat of a sexy person' and it sounds unhinged but it totally makes sense 😂

Magpiecomplex · 12/03/2025 11:14

Shalimar today, now the weather has gone colder again

IDontHateRainbows · 12/03/2025 11:30

Yes, bit of a false dawn with the springlike weather wasn't it! Always the way this time of year.
I've rediscovered an old mini of Kayali vanilla 28 which combines well with the mumbai noise - much prefer it to the mumbai on its own as it adds a bit of sweetness whilst still allowing the depth and oud of the mumbai to show through. Kayali 28 is a good, steady old faithful - can be worn alone or layered with other scents as it's a fairly rich vanilla but not too complex.
I'm kind of glad we are back to wintry weather as overall i'm much more of a 'winter scents' person than summer scents. Love anything rich, warm, spicy, sweet. Having said that variety is the spice of life so I'm looking forward to getting the more summery scents out soon. Of course, I can wear what I want whenever I want to, but I just won't feel like something heavy and smokey on a hot summer's day.

Not a fancy or obscure one but Charlie the red one. For ages I used the body mist version but now I have the perfume (or prob edt). Really like it!

fromthevault · 12/03/2025 12:47

SOTD is Vilhelm Parfumerie 125th & Bloom. I really love this. I don't get the leather but I do get the lovely spicy metallic rose, fabulous.

One of my favourite newish houses, I think.

it does. I like Arizona Bloom Floral Street a lot and has the same scent plus added coconut. Warm salty skin after sea swim. It doesn't sound nice but it really is

MiaN · 12/03/2025 18:15

For the smokey vanilla ladies - did you get your nose on Vanilla Smoke by Phlur. Worth a try

paristotokyo · 12/03/2025 20:34

@MiaN ooh that sounds lovely, will give it a try next time I see it. I was also looking at the vanilla smoke online yesterday. Need to visit a space nk and give it a try as I don't think it's a safe blind buy
