Snag tights - WTF???

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 14/02/2025 10:45

Hi everyone

I posted on this board asking about an outfit and someone suggested I should buy some coloured tights from Snag.

I've just been onto their website and it's like a shop for fetishists. Some seriously weird stuff.

I'm not uptight or a prude, but I honestly thought this was a shop selling tights. I've seen a few ads pop up on FB showing different coloured tights. But there were loads of photos of other stuff which was outside the norm.

I appreciate that there's probably a continuum in underwear with opaque 80 Denier tights at one end and fetish stuff at the other, but wouldn't it make more sense to have these as two separate businesses? Or am I just being precious?

The issue is, you've all found a site that is selling underwear and lingerie to women of a particular size, who are not well catered for, and decided to decry it because you don't like their style of photography.

The reason you don't like it is because its fat women.

Straight size lingerie sites are COVERED in women in similar poses, and no-one mentions those, no-one is on here calling them disgusting or accusing them of 'pornification'.

Its plus size women looking sexy that you have an issue with. Stop trying to hide it behind your pearl clutching.

Eminybob · 14/02/2025 13:37

If Snag were using very underweight models to advertise their tights then they would be slammed for promoting unhealthy body shapes.
Using morbidly obese also normalises and promotes unhealthy bodies.

Why is one ok and the other is not?

ItGhoul · 14/02/2025 13:40

verysmellyjelly · 14/02/2025 13:26

@ItGhoul I agree, anything can be a fetish. That doesn't really pertain to my post, though, which was challenging another poster who condemned people disliking the Snag advertising style as being, supposedly, "prudes". Just because someone can a fetish for, say, beetroot, doesn't mean that beetroot has to be removed from all the shops, no. But that doesn't mean that fetishwear or obvious BDSM influenced iconography is a good thing, or that women are wrong for objecting to it.

But my point is that you are arbitrarily deciding what fetishwear is acceptable (white cotton knickers) and what fetishwear isn't (knickers with leather straps). Both those things can cater to fetishes and therefore are 'fetishwear' to someone.

95% of underwear is designed to look attractive to someone - both the people who are wearing it, and the people who are looking at them wearing it. Why is it acceptable for M&S to advertise lacy bras to people who find lacy bras sexy and attractive, but not for Snag to sell bras with buckles and straps to people who find buckles and straps attractive? They're both designed with sexual attractiveness in mind.

verysmellyjelly · 14/02/2025 13:40

@WinterBones None of my comments show any animus towards fat women or you would have been able to cite an example.

Calzedonia, where I buy my tights from, doesn't have models in odd poses. Usually buy my underwear from M and S or Uniqlo ( Yes, I know I am so boring). No pornification there.

I had to click through 5 images to see a size 10-12 woman on Snag, so I guess they don't want to cater to me. That's fine.
Don't see why we should be called pearlclutchers for that though. Women like models they identify with.

What a load of bollocks. I am plus sized and used to be customer from the very early days. I even helped to bail them out when they were struggling by buying vouchers to use at a later date after receiving a begging email from them. I no longer buy from them because they started advertising their brand by using a grown man in drag dressed as a toddler and selling patches about choking. And throwing women's rights under the bus by promoting TWAW.

MyCatNamedCookingFat · 14/02/2025 14:02

Basically, what @DialSquare just said.

I remember the choking patches.

Some of the models are not just plus sized, they are very clearly morbidly obese, not a body image we should normalise any more than stick thin models.

RedPandaLove · 14/02/2025 14:24

@WinterBones I apologise, I didn't mean to cause any offence

Absolute bollocks. I don't buy from any company that uses pornified marketing.

Morbidly obese is not plus sized. Men in stockings is not plus sized. This is a website that was proudly selling badges saying "choke me" and "cum slut"...so if you can't see the pornification you're feicing blind.

But sure, try to convince yourself and us that the women here, many of whom are fairly likely to be plus sized, like myself, are just fainting at the sight of chubby women in tights. Makes sense

henlake7 · 14/02/2025 15:01

The patches sound abit off but I cant see anything like that on the site. The only things that seem abit risque are in the 'sexy' section and I would assume they are more for bedroom activities rather then a trip to Sainsbury! (although I do quite fancy the underbust harness!).

I think I prefer their approach to somewhere like M&S for example. At least its real women (or men!) in real poses, not rows of size 8 disembodied legs!

BeMoreAmandaland · 14/02/2025 15:30

verysmellyjelly · 14/02/2025 12:58

Please could posters on the thread make some effort to remember that a lot of lesbians see "queer" as a slur rather than a fun word for alt fashion? It's upsetting seeing it in S&B so casually.

I've bought from Snag before but I agree they've pornified themselves to cater to men. Now I boycott.

I apologise, I didn't realise some people still felt this way, thank you for speaking up.

Mumsnet is hilarious - is this a joke? clutches victorian bosom.

Snag tights are great

Yes, "Choke me" and " Cum slut" badges are hilarious when so many women are choked to death every year. Though they have taken them off now.

OneBadKitty · 14/02/2025 15:58

ItGhoul · 14/02/2025 13:30

The fact that 'most people don't dress this way' doesn't mean it's bad or wrong or offensive or an inappropriate way to sell tights, though?! A fat person in tights is no more offensive than a thin person in tights, and tights teamed with a witchy black dress are no more offensive than tights teamed with a jersey wrap-dress from Boden. So... why is it a problem that someone might see those things when buying tights?!

I’m not offended at all, and it’s not a problem either, but it’s not going to make me buy the tights because I don’t enjoy the aesthetic and just makes me think- nah, there’s better tights for my desired look in other places.

RedPandaLove · 14/02/2025 14:24

Of course, morbidly obese people are not allowed to wear clothes or, heaven forbid, see adverts showing how clothes will fit them. Giant potato sacks only and no leaving the house until they've lost weight.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 14/02/2025 16:26

<whispers> I think poppy/snag/better are all the same tights. Same Italian size chart, same colours, same everything really. Only tried snag and better, but saw no difference. Ditched snag when they advertised tights on a big bearded blokey in them in a frilly little number.

FattyLump · 14/02/2025 16:37

TheChosenTwo · 14/02/2025 13:08

They are the only place I buy tights from. Regular size, plain black, fit my long legs, don’t wriggle down and are pretty hard wearing.
They aren’t the only place to buy tights from, you are free to buy them from anywhere! But they suit my needs so I buy mine from snag.
A surprisingly large amount of people froth at the mouth after looking at their website and create threads about it!
I have never noticed their marketing because I just don’t take an interest, all I want to do is buy clothes that work for me.

Their tights are the ONLY ones which don't fall down on me and last ages. I still have a pair I bought in 2020!

I have tried Better Tights and they were really not as good, nor did they fit well. I have a mile to walk to the station and was usually grasping at my tights by the time I got there to stop them falling over my bum!

I had stopped wearing tights altogether until I found Snag.

Eminybob · 14/02/2025 16:37

Of course they are allowed to wear clothes. As are anorexics. However we have moved away (in the main) from using them as models as it promotes unhealthy body shapes. Why is ok to promote unhealthy bodies at the other end of the spectrum?

Eminybob · 14/02/2025 16:39

And let's be clear, Snag are not using "normal sized" or even plus sized models. They are using super morbidly obese models.

Eminybob · 14/02/2025 16:40

Sorry, that should say not just using

Definitely not the same. Snag fit me (short and fat). Better and Popsy don't.

ClioMuse · 14/02/2025 11:15

Try Better tights - I switched from Snag due to the fetish advertising

Yes agreed - having bought Snag previously someone recommended Better tights on a previous thread and I bought some in the sale to try. Very impressed - fit very well and are very comfortable to wear. My snag tights are staying in the drawer now!

LolaJ87 · 14/02/2025 16:51

Eminybob · 14/02/2025 16:39

And let's be clear, Snag are not using "normal sized" or even plus sized models. They are using super morbidly obese models.

Snag use a mix of models, wearing all their sizes. I just scrolled down the homepage of their website I'm seeing lots of women in different shapes and sizes, guessing from a size 8 to a size 30ish? It's ok to have problems with them but lets not pretend all their models are "super" morbidly obese.

LolaJ87 · 14/02/2025 16:52

AH sorry @Eminybob I see you've already corrected yourself there.
