Snag tights - WTF???

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 14/02/2025 10:45

Hi everyone

I posted on this board asking about an outfit and someone suggested I should buy some coloured tights from Snag.

I've just been onto their website and it's like a shop for fetishists. Some seriously weird stuff.

I'm not uptight or a prude, but I honestly thought this was a shop selling tights. I've seen a few ads pop up on FB showing different coloured tights. But there were loads of photos of other stuff which was outside the norm.

I appreciate that there's probably a continuum in underwear with opaque 80 Denier tights at one end and fetish stuff at the other, but wouldn't it make more sense to have these as two separate businesses? Or am I just being precious?

But even the tights page has models dressed a particular way like as witches etc. or with sexy goth type fashion and most of them are very curvy and plus sized. Most people don't dress this way so it's all very niche.

Yes, that's their whole USP. They aren't your granny's boring tights. They aren't pin thin models with 10 foot long legs. They are different.

Lentilweaver · 14/02/2025 13:19

I don't like the Better Tights aesthetic either. I buy coloured tights from Calzedonia.

@HiptotheHopp I think you meant to quote the other poster, not me! I don't think that perceiving the q word as a slur is confined to any specific age group.

They're morbidly obese or men, quite often. That many.of us so not want to see almost naked. Different is right.

verysmellyjelly · 14/02/2025 13:20

@WinterBones I don't agree that pornified advertising of a normal item of clothing (tights) is not hurting anyone, though.

then don't visit the site.

It doesn't bother me, i like the aesthetic, and their products.

Indeed, I misquoted somehow! That was at whoever thought it was an old person thung (it's not).

Isn't it weird that people are quite obsessive about slurs they agree on, but so dismissive when they don't? Almost as if slurs are perfectly fine if you.juat choose to disagree with them....

verysmellyjelly · 14/02/2025 13:22

@whatawonderfultime Do you always dismiss it as a "you thing" when someone from a specific group currently being aggressively targeted by men, such as lesbians, says that a word is a slur?

verysmellyjelly · 14/02/2025 13:23

@HiptotheHopp I agree, very curious indeed! You just know that it's not because they don't think use of slurs matters. If you used other words that they felt were slurs, they'd be all over you for hate speech. But women and lesbians are a soft target...

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 14/02/2025 13:24

I see where you are coming from. Those body harness things do look a bit like what you imagine bdsm gear to look like. All leather and studs and tying you up.
But I don't think it's anything to get your knickers in a twist over. I doubt people are wearing them on their own round tesco. I expect they're worn as part of an outfit.

ItGhoul · 14/02/2025 13:24

verysmellyjelly · 14/02/2025 12:59

Rejecting fetishised styles isn't prudish.

Anything can be a fetish. Plain white cotton knickers are a fetish for plenty of people, as are ordinary high heels or leather jackets or certain haircuts (as I discovered on Instagram when I had a shaved undercut and suddenly got followed by several random men). So I think if your argument against a retailer selling underwear with leather straps or accessories with chains and buckles is that anything that could be perceived as fetish-related must be intrinsically bad, you're on shaky ground really. Ultimately, the fact that some people find something sexy doesn't mean it shouldn't exist or be worn.

verysmellyjelly · 14/02/2025 13:24

@WinterBones I don't visit the site, I boycott it. But your argument is quite literally that people should train themselves to be okay with everything because something you have an instinctive negative reaction to is actually fine. And I'm saying, in this case, it isn't fine.

Lentilweaver · 14/02/2025 13:26

I like thin models with long legs in normal poses personally, however grannyish that may be. When I wear tights I am usually running to catch the Tube and on my way to a business meeting. It's not often I am thrusting my bum out or waving my legs in the air.

Luckily, there's room for everyone. If Snag thinks I am a cis granny prude, no worries.

It is fine, you're the one who dislikes it, its not hurting anyone, the fact you disagree is a you issue.

verysmellyjelly · 14/02/2025 13:26

@ItGhoul I agree, anything can be a fetish. That doesn't really pertain to my post, though, which was challenging another poster who condemned people disliking the Snag advertising style as being, supposedly, "prudes". Just because someone can a fetish for, say, beetroot, doesn't mean that beetroot has to be removed from all the shops, no. But that doesn't mean that fetishwear or obvious BDSM influenced iconography is a good thing, or that women are wrong for objecting to it.

verysmellyjelly · 14/02/2025 13:27

@WinterBones You and others can keep repeating that it's a me issue, but everyone knows that's not true. It's verbiage. Pornification of women and women's clothes affects all women, and also young girls.

You carry on getting your knickers in a knot about photography of plus size women looking beautiful in lingerie.. i'll carry on applauding it.

My body size being photographed is not fetish.

The fact that 'most people don't dress this way' doesn't mean it's bad or wrong or offensive or an inappropriate way to sell tights, though?! A fat person in tights is no more offensive than a thin person in tights, and tights teamed with a witchy black dress are no more offensive than tights teamed with a jersey wrap-dress from Boden. So... why is it a problem that someone might see those things when buying tights?!

Thank you. I think this possibly sums it up for me. Lots of posters are saying I'm a prude or have an issue with obese models. That may be the case, although I'm overweight myself.

But thinking about it, it's the pornographic poses of the women (and men) that unsettle me.

@WinterBones Which of my comments refers to body size?

verysmellyjelly · 14/02/2025 13:33

@AnnaQuayInTheUk I think some posters are deeply invested in the bigger models or want to justify continuing to buy from the company. I have absolutely no issue with a wider range of models, in fact that's something I think more companies should do! Snag are not the only company doing this. It's telling to me that posters are claiming we must be prudes or discriminatory rather than having genuine concerns. Trust your instinct.

the witchy ones are from the halloween collection. There's also some there from a collab with ACOTAR. they're dressed to theme.. or is that a problem now too?
