Things that S and B hates but are actually pretty great

I have just leaned into being unfashionable and bought a pair of Fitflop trainers, after looking everywhere for comfortable city walking trainers. I expected them to be hideous given the flak they get on here, but actually, they look ok. Minimalist even. And are supremely comfortable. I had trendy Adidas before and they were so hard on my feet. Hate the large, ugly branding on NB, Hoka and other trendy trainers.

I feel the same way about my Seasalt Janelle, now in it's third year, much reviled on here, but I think it looks fine on me and is such good quality. Also my Land's End coat and swimsuit.

What other things do you like that are not trendy, but great quality and you wear all the time?

Uggs!

CestLaVie123 · 29/12/2024 15:40

Skinny jeans - I'll say it every time, I think they flatter almost all body shapes

I don't wear them really but I controversially prefer (good quality, well matched) nude tights to bare legs with closed toe shoes for Caucasians. Especially if it means people aren't badly streaky tanning their legs. Ankles are so tricky. And especially for formal occasions.

Fleeces are a tricky one because they are very much having a fashion revival. It's the too sensible, full zip in a single colour which aren't de rigueur.

Edited

Nude tights and closed toe pumps, it’s all going a bit Dynasty.

bluetonguegiraffe · 29/12/2024 15:59

I think socks and sandals are superb. So practical. Keeps your feet aired and warm, without being overwarm, on mild days. And you can take the socks off and put them in your pocket or bag if it gets warmer.

So bloody practical. Brilliant.

ZaZathecat · 29/12/2024 16:04

A lot of people are saying Uggs, but they're super trendy again now amongst all the youngsters I know

Rina66 · 29/12/2024 16:07

French polish on toes
Crocs - life safer if I'm on my feet all day cooking, cleaning etc
Skinny jeans - we get too much rain for wide legs in winter

DustyLee123 · 29/12/2024 16:07

Skinny jeans look so much better than those chunky mum style ones.

Snowmanscarf · 29/12/2024 16:07

Bootcut trousers - love ‘em

Eldermillennial2024 · 29/12/2024 16:09

I can't think of anything!

I don't like the look of leggings, Uggs or crocs but get they're comfy and love leggings at home. I do still wear skinny jeans sometimes although I recently got some bootcut jeans from M&S and they're so much more flattering.

Alltheburpees · 29/12/2024 16:13

I commit the major MN sin of having long hair despite being old.
I agree with PPs about skinny jeans. They suit my figure far better than other styles, especially worn with boots and a big jumper.
I still love my stilettos, although don’t have many occasions to wear them now.

CarefulN0w · 29/12/2024 16:32

So glad to hear the skinny jeans resisters. I've yet to find a pair of comfy shoes that look good with wide leg trousers, but have plenty of options for my skinnies.

Lentilweaver · 29/12/2024 16:33

I dont like skinny jeans, but I see plenty still wearing them.

lindyloo57 · 29/12/2024 16:33

I love skinnie jeans, but as I've got older my knees seem to stick out more in them, like they are bony, I never notice it before, and no I haven't lost weight.

JustCrow · 29/12/2024 16:38

Bootcut/flared trousers and jeans.

My thighs look big in skinnies but slim in bootcut.

Fizbosshoes · 29/12/2024 16:46

I have recently replaced 2 pairs of skinny jeans with 1 pair of skinny and 1 pair of bootcut.
I'm considering some wide leg ones but they could only be worn when I knew there was no chance of rain or puddles. When looking for new jeans there are still lots of skinny jeans to choose from.

I wear short skirts with black opaque tights, I didn't know that wasn't OK , but tbf I don't really keep up with fashion or trends.

As an aside, after 10 years of only wearing skinnies, I found my ankles quite drafty when I was wearing bootcut jeans yesterday!

HellofromJohnCraven · 29/12/2024 16:46

Skipper collar blouses, particularly from uniqlo.
As a short woman with a comedy size chest, they cover it, skim the stomach and cannot flash the cleavage. I read about them on here. And I have never been more thankful.

HellofromJohnCraven · 29/12/2024 16:47

Oh, and long socks under jeans. Game changer

I keep looking at uggs but haven't had any in about 15 years and all I remember is walking on the sides of them andy feet getting soaked! I take it they are better now?

Mine are fairly sturdy, never turned my foot over in them. Especially the shorter ones.

BaubleMania · 29/12/2024 17:12

Heels.

Dressing up in London.

Long grey hair.

Hear hear! I have a huge collection of socks for this exact reason. Also, if it's good enough Mrs Prada and Linda Wright, then it's good enough for me.

In answer to the OP, thb, MN S&B hatred is a great thing because if they're raving about it on here, am less likely to be a fan anyway 😂

Also love double denim and on occasion, triple denim too. The trick is to wear different shades and weights.

BaubleMania · 29/12/2024 17:13

With you on the socks and sandals too.

Particularly heeled sandals for a double win.

BaubleMania · 29/12/2024 17:14

Double denim is great.

Itsaswelltime · 29/12/2024 17:18

I didn’t know what a Seasalt Janelle is, but I Googled it and it looks stylish, Scandi minimalist ? I was imagining some sort of burgundy anorak !
