Things that S and B hates but are actually pretty great

I have just leaned into being unfashionable and bought a pair of Fitflop trainers, after looking everywhere for comfortable city walking trainers. I expected them to be hideous given the flak they get on here, but actually, they look ok. Minimalist even. And are supremely comfortable. I had trendy Adidas before and they were so hard on my feet. Hate the large, ugly branding on NB, Hoka and other trendy trainers.

I feel the same way about my Seasalt Janelle, now in it's third year, much reviled on here, but I think it looks fine on me and is such good quality. Also my Land's End coat and swimsuit.

What other things do you like that are not trendy, but great quality and you wear all the time?

Skinny jeans, ballerina flats, colourful clothes, acrylics, viscose

ToomanyMilesAway · 29/12/2024 20:42

My Barbour long quilted Carolina coat!

I also have a Seasalt Coverack which is probably despised too !

Hair extensions
Leather biker jackets
Micro bladed eyebrows
<whisper> thinking of getting the teeniest bit of filler in my lips in the new year.

@SparkyBlue Have a look on eBay at the Seasalt shop.

I buy loads from there. Just before Christmas I got a Plant Hunter coat for under £40. It's a £160 coat!

Sickofcheese · 29/12/2024 20:58

I also have the Janelle and fiflop trainers, love them! I have just ordered a pair of fitflop mukluk boots, which look a bit like uggs but are good for your feet.

I also love tulle skirts, coloured leggings, long granny nighties, seasalt tunics & crocs. Although not all at once.

(usually)

They don't ship to Ireland

Little, fitted cardis. I don't think they've been in fashion for about 20 years - in fact, not sure if they were ever in fashion - but I still love them.

FKAT · 29/12/2024 21:11

Yes to skinny jeans. Wide legged and flared is all very well in clement weather but hardly suitable for walking a dog round London at this time of year. And hard to match shoes/boots to, as a PP has pointed out.

YES to dressing up in London. But I think that is a dated view now anyway. I had an event last year and all the London lot wore glam dresses and the provincials jeans & a jumper.

Plus bodycon, tight clothes and dressing sexy. I will be showing legs and boobs (YES BOTH) on New Years Eve. I'm so sick of Amish peasant flappy maxi horrors.

DevilWitch · 29/12/2024 21:13

I see loads of biker jackets around are they out?? Also bootcut and flared jeans are in fashion just now so not a no-no.

I’m not very fashionable though, although have finally abandoned my skinnies as much as I love them, I do feel they look dated

I didn't realise fleeces were a fashion faux pas. I wear them a lot !

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/12/2024 21:32

I'm throwing viscose in too , I know it is hated on here
So many I won;t wear anything but pure cotton/ pure silk./pure linen

Cotton is fine , I don't wear silk personally and linen looks like a rag before I've gone near it .

Viscose is a wood pulp fabric , apparently it traps BO but I haven't found it worse than cotton

Only Wolef Fleeces Wink

Probably spelled wrong

Lotsofsnacks · 29/12/2024 21:33

I too had to google the Janelle raincoat, and it looks fine, quite minimalist and very inoffensive (if you pick the right colour🤪).

I like Barbour coats and crocs (though not necessarily worn together!).

I didn’t know what a Seasalt Janelle is, but I Googled it and it looks stylish, Scandi minimalist ? I was imagining some sort of burgundy anorak !

Same! I thought it was going to be far worse based on the comments.

louderthan · 29/12/2024 21:52

I am definitely mutton dressed as lamb. I am nearly 44 and live in mini skirts, leopard print, gold jewellery and pointy studded boots and I don't care. I've got a silver puffer jacket and lots of pairs of impractical trainers that cost over £100. I also wear lots of 90s sportswear and I have a lot of the Greggs for Primark stuff. However I wouldn't be seen dead in Uggs, Vejas or anything from Seasalt/White Stuff/Fat Face.

louderthan · 29/12/2024 21:55

Also, y'all know that Uggs, Crocs and fleeces are very popular with younger women right now? I work in a uni and that's how they all dress.

needhelpwiththisplease · 29/12/2024 22:08

@louderthan Greggs for primark isn't mutton dressed as lamb!
It's just joke youth clothing.
The kids at your uni will wear it to doss about in !

Cherrypickled · 29/12/2024 22:11

Fleeces are all the rage atm.

menopausalfart · 29/12/2024 22:12

I wear for comfort as I have sensory issues. I really don't care about fashion, what age group likes it etc, as long as it's comfortable and made well. I like clothes that work and last.

Floisme · 29/12/2024 22:23

I quite like that Seasalt Coverack.

I dislike my Janelle because it's got all these little details like shaping at the waist and a curved hem at the back which I guess are intended to be stylish and flattering but which I actually find fussy and annoying.

FagsMagsandBags · 29/12/2024 22:32

I got a Seasalt waterproof raincoat for Christmas from a friend and it's perfect. A gorgeous shade of French navy. I don't think it's a Janelle, well because it doesn't say that it is and isn't lined with warming lining. She gave me an old thin quilted coat from Primarny which goes under it so I now have a winter and summer raincoat. I think Seasalt are okay, they do some decent stuff.

I a baggy dungaree and have a pair I love in a lovely shade of blue (I do wear colours other than blue!)

I didn't know that opaque tights were verbotten. Their loss frankly. They're fine and dandy in basic black but you can get all manner of colours and they can really fancy up all black (of which I am a fan) with a pop of colour.

I've noticed some of these "dislikes" on S&B and usually just silentl snorted to myself especially when it's voiced with such an air of "I'm right how could I not be you poor plebs." Like others I have to be comfortable and like others I know that doesn't mean being frumpy or blending into the background or anything like that. Unless of course I/you/whoever wants to.

2025 is going to be my year of making more clothes for myself which will mean definite comfort. I shall be starting the year slowly by making pockets for some items I have and love but that miss out on perfection by missing out on pockets.

To everyone in their Seasalt, White Stuff, Uggs, skinny jeans, opaque tights, biker jackets (really? what are they on?!), crocs, teddy jackets, polonecks, fitflops, Sketchers and whatever brings you joy, have a fabulous 2025 being comfortable and having not a fuck to give to the begrudgers!

weareallcats · 29/12/2024 22:43

Style is individual - fashion is something different. The thing that makes someone stylish is confidence and confidence comes from feeling comfortable in your clothes, so we should all just wear whatever the hell we like.
