Things that S and B hates but are actually pretty great

I have just leaned into being unfashionable and bought a pair of Fitflop trainers, after looking everywhere for comfortable city walking trainers. I expected them to be hideous given the flak they get on here, but actually, they look ok. Minimalist even. And are supremely comfortable. I had trendy Adidas before and they were so hard on my feet. Hate the large, ugly branding on NB, Hoka and other trendy trainers.

I feel the same way about my Seasalt Janelle, now in it's third year, much reviled on here, but I think it looks fine on me and is such good quality. Also my Land's End coat and swimsuit.

What other things do you like that are not trendy, but great quality and you wear all the time?

Dressing up in London.
Elaborating the answer from @BaubleMania , specially dressing up for theatre, ballet, play or recital in London.
Step out of the metropolis and dressing up is the norm!

Undisclosedlocation · 29/12/2024 17:24

Thank you ladies, thanks to the advice on this thread I now have my ‘style’ nailed

I shall commit to ‘comfy and not looking like a pillock’ henceforth. If I mange only one of the two, I shall still consider it a win

unsync · 29/12/2024 17:30

I like to wear thick socks with my Birkenstocks in the winter. I also like to wear my Norwegian winter hats with ear flaps. I can't bear cold extremities or wearing shoes.

Doggymummar · 29/12/2024 17:39

I dog walk in socks and sliders, sometimes in jamas and wellies with a puffa coat on.

I have also bought some beautiful items from people's recommendations for when it matters.

Heels.

Dressing up in London.

Long grey hair.

Dressing up full stop is great. It's one of the things that got me through a long illness and many depressing visits to hospital for seemingly never-ending treatment. (When I was at home it was a different matter, but if I had to leave the house, I always wore something great).

Life's too short not to dress up. I doubt anyone's death bed regrets are not wearing more leisure wear 😂

Regrettably can no longer wear heels but have kept a few pairs just in case this skill returns. YY to long grey hair. So chic.

KittenPause · 29/12/2024 17:42

DD has converted me to wearing longer socks with trainers and not trainer socks

I now wear any colour I like without giving AF Grin

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/12/2024 18:05

@BaubleMania I really hate that, 'Everybody in London wears rags to the theatre' crap on here. I don't go mad, but I do like to wear a dress to the theatre, even if it's just a dress and DMs. I would never go to the theatre in jeans and trainers and don't give a flying fig if that makes me look like a tourist.

@Undisclosedlocation I believe that Vogue are running a, 'How Not to Dress Like a Pillock' double spread in their February edition.

I wore long bootcut jeans yesterday (I usually wear rolled up mom or boyfriend type) and was quite pleasantly surprised how slim and long my little fat legs looked. They did drag on the floor though.

Cherrypickled · 29/12/2024 18:21

I didn't even know that wearing longer socks with trainers was a fashion no no. I hate trainer socks.

WhyDoWannaDoTha · 29/12/2024 18:22

keep looking at uggs but haven't had any in about 15 years and all I remember is walking on the sides of them andy feet getting soaked! I take it they are better now?

I have a pair of proper UGGs but I wear them as slippers. They are the knitted ones that can be rolled down. I bought them 11years ago. I absolutely adore them but found they weren't practical for British weather. They soon became very expensive indoor shoes! But, all these years later, they have kept my feet warm through 11 winters and are still in perfect condition.

I think the collapsing sides were the terrible dupes people bought for £10 from NewLook etc

Skinny jeans - I'll say it every time, I think they flatter almost all body shapes

Good grief, not if your legs happen to look like two rustic + organic parsnips.

I’m 6ft and fairly slim and I’d still much rather wear a beautifully fitted pair of flared jeans - they do truly flatter, especially with a heel.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/12/2024 19:10

M&S Jeggings (I'm not a jeans wearer and I don't want all these different barrell leg/Mom/Boyfriend/flared etc )
Kipling or Roka bags
Skechers
Pleather - I don'y wear leather or suede or use feather as I;m a vegetarian. They are not a cheaper alternative they can be ££ .

menopausalfart · 29/12/2024 19:17

@Floisme I've just bought a Seasalt coat based on your recommendation.😂

Monsterjam · 29/12/2024 19:34

AnyFucker · 29/12/2024 13:56

Crocs
Uggs
Dungarees
Teddy jackets
Bobby hats
Love them all

Oh that’s my whole wardrobe! I’m with you on loving them all!

AhBiscuits · 29/12/2024 19:40

Sketchers. They're pretty comfortable and I wear them a lot day to day.

Lentilweaver · 29/12/2024 19:45

Itsaswelltime · 29/12/2024 17:18

I didn’t know what a Seasalt Janelle is, but I Googled it and it looks stylish, Scandi minimalist ? I was imagining some sort of burgundy anorak !

Ha ha they are really not Scandi chic. But not as ugly as they are made out to be either. And very well made.

Bootcut jeans, Seasalt Plant Hunter coat and Grisport Avenger Trekking boots is my dog walking uniform. And I have long hair over 60 and have given up on make-up. The ultimate S & B rebel 😉

Ha ha, it won't let you down Grin

Tooty78 · 29/12/2024 20:00

I have several pairs of Per Una 'Roma' bootcut jeans, that must be at least 15 + years old! I love them and the slim leggy look they give me.
I am typical pear shape, so would never wear leggings or skinny jeans, I haven't got the thighs for them.

Vicliz24 · 29/12/2024 20:05

Denim jackets - the most useful summer cover up . Big yes to long grey hair . Thin polo necks under everything between October & April. Definitely Uggs ! My oldest pair ,15 years are my winter slippers. Will add proper slippers to my list too .

MeMeMeMeOw · 29/12/2024 20:07

Grinch pyjamas.

Ilikeyoursleeves · 29/12/2024 20:07

I didn't know skinny jeans were frowned upon? I've worn them for about 20 years 🫣 What jeans are 'in' then??

Skinnies have been out so long they are almost back in again. Where have you been? 😂
Various varieties of wide leg are the ones now.

Patienceinshortsupply · 29/12/2024 14:27

I take no notice of recommendations on S & B as frankly most of what is shared as the holy grail of clothing looks like something that an inmate in a Victorian asylum would have worn.

I love Seasalt, White Stuff, Fatface, Uggs and Fitflop. Don't give a fuck what I look like as long as I'm comfy - life's too short.

If you don't give a fuck what you look like may I ask why you are on Style and Beauty?

Ginlovingmumof4 · 29/12/2024 20:39

What’s S&B?

SparkyBlue · 29/12/2024 20:41

Thanks to you lot I've gone on to seasalt and discovered the Jenelle comes in petite . I'm very very tempted
