Things that S and B hates but are actually pretty great

I have just leaned into being unfashionable and bought a pair of Fitflop trainers, after looking everywhere for comfortable city walking trainers. I expected them to be hideous given the flak they get on here, but actually, they look ok. Minimalist even. And are supremely comfortable. I had trendy Adidas before and they were so hard on my feet. Hate the large, ugly branding on NB, Hoka and other trendy trainers.

I feel the same way about my Seasalt Janelle, now in it's third year, much reviled on here, but I think it looks fine on me and is such good quality. Also my Land's End coat and swimsuit.

What other things do you like that are not trendy, but great quality and you wear all the time?

Hmm, dare I ask, what about 'flattering'? Is that also subjective?

Hmmmm 🤔I'm not sure that's always a priority with some... I often find myself wondering whether they ever actually look in the mirror before leaving the house....😏

Sorry. Bitchy, I know...🤐

henlake7 · 30/12/2024 12:59

jeggings

Popsy dresses

crew socks with everything
(I feel like this one is an odd one coz no matter how fashionable it gets S&B is determined to absolutely hate it!😆
thing is Ive worn my socks like this since I was a kid as I like warm, comfy feet and ankles. Trainer socks can just do one IMO).

menopausalfart · 30/12/2024 13:01

@CoubousAndTourmalet I avoid mirrors at all costs. I apologize to anyone who may come across me. 😆

OopsieeDaisy · 30/12/2024 14:24

Like others, I had to look up the Seasalt Janelle coat and it’s very inoffensive!

I am a big fan of my Barbour coat and didn’t realise they were hated on S&B, I also wear gym leggings when not in the gym, trainers as everyday shoes, a short (not cropped) puffer coat, and I’ve recently dug my skinny jeans back out as I realised they suit me better than the looser styles around. I’d happily wear uggs again (mine are all long gone) but can’t currently justify the cost.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 30/12/2024 14:50

Are Barbours hated? I had no idea.... Is it Barbour as a brand or just wax cotton in general I wonder...?

I've got a Barbour Beadnell dupe and I have to say it's far more flattering than my Seasalt Plant Hunter. If it's wet, gloomy, foggy I'll wear the Seasalt because its warmer and longer but for a dry-ish day, like today, I'll always reach for the wax jacket. It just seems to fit really well with bootcut jeans and leather walking boots. I'm probably more Camilla than Kate but the dogs don't mind...

Floisme · 30/12/2024 14:57

I'm also a bit bemused by the idea that Barbours are hated. (Mind you that applies to a lot of suggestions on this thread.)

I've got a waxed cotton Barbour coat (knee length) and much prefer the look of it to my Janelle. In fact I bought it hoping it would be a replacement (for Janelle) but it's not fully waterproof or quite as warm, so now I have both which annoys me every winter.

Mespher · 30/12/2024 15:02

I struggle with coats anyway as I'm fairly tall but have exceedingly long arms which unfortunately don't shrink like the rest of me will slightly as I get older and Seasalt do a tall version, most coats are halfway up my arms.

menopausalfart · 30/12/2024 15:04

I had a short, black Barbour for years. It was the most comfortable jacket I've ever owned. Not warm enough for the winter months though. I'm looking forward to receiving my Seasalt. My current Winter coat is just not cutting it.

henlake7 · 30/12/2024 15:18

Primark...

Nobody can convince me that a Primark shopping spree isnt the best thing ever!

I also have a Seasalt Coverack which is probably despised too !

I like that one! I've got a reversible (but you'd never wear it reversed) Seasalt parka which they don't do anymore. I never love wearing it but needed a waterproof coat for commuting and needs must. I sold another Seasalt one bought in haste for similar reasons and got about 50% of the original cost after about 5 years so they're not bad investments.

The thing is that everyone thinks their idea of what’s in or out is the correct one.

Personally I’m with @Floisme and can’t bear being uncomfortable no matter what I’m wearing, but I don’t look good in, and don’t like wearing, a lot of the things that are generally deemed comfortable by the ‘can’t be bothered with fashion’ brigade. I look and feel better in something with a little
bit of structure. Everyone is different!

The thing is that everyone thinks their idea of what’s in or out is the correct one.

Actually, no, I don't believe this is true because this validates the idea that everyone care about what's in and out. Some of us don't give a damn if our clothing is on trend or in vogue, I'm more interested in looking stylish (and being comfortable). Fashionable does not always equal stylish and vice versa.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 30/12/2024 17:32

Never been bothered about being "fashionable" ever, in my life. Stylish, yes, but style never dates whereas fashion does.

Skinny jeans look so much better than those chunky mum style ones.

Yes any style of jean looks better than 'Mom' jeans they are truly grim and unflattering.

Floisme · 30/12/2024 17:51

See I find fashion - and especially fashion history - fascinating. But then I'm a very shallow person.

I disagree. They work on me - I'm short and curvy - used to be hourglass but now more round - but only when rolled up and worn with something tucked in, plus a belt and then something open over the tucked in thing.

I love reading about fashion/looking at pics and love fashion history. I've never been terribly bothered about what's 'in' though, and increasingly 'in' means different things anyway, since we're not all waiting on tenterhooks for the latest missive from Paris. I do find it fascinating to see trends though, especially in different places and for different demographics.

Last time I was in Manchester, lots of young women were wearing what were basically tennis skirts with bare legs and big knee high black boots. It was a look and a half! However, I've not seen this look anywhere else.

Around us, I see lots of hipster types sporting bright coloured knitwear, slouchy jeans or patterned wide leg trousers, DMs or birkies and faux fur coats.

Floisme · 30/12/2024 18:09

Glad it's not just me who finds it fascinating Remus.

I'm intrigued by the cycles and the way clothing can start to look 'off' when it goes out of fashion and then how it starts looking fresh and interesting again when it comes back around. (Yes, yes, in my opinion - like I've said, I'm very shallow.)

LawrenceSMarlowforPresident · 30/12/2024 18:10

Dresses with leggings. I know that is considered horrifically out of fashion. However, I am always encouraged when I wear this combination and receive compliments from my uni students.

I quite like Breton tops, which are often sneered at here.

I also have some nice things from Seasalt, Joules, White Stuff.

Sussurations · 30/12/2024 18:11

Yes, Mom jeans work on me too. I’m a short pear/hourglass. I look truly horrible in skinnies, and blocky in wide legs (love wide legs on others).

Ive always been interested in fashion, though I agree it’s very different nowadays, but I enjoy observing trends, especially what the youngsters are wearing.

Im not super stylish, but I don’t think it’s possible to be stylish without at least some knowledge of/understanding of fashion. There’s a big difference between nodding to what’s current and incorporating it into your own style, and slavishly copying a whole look regardless of what works for you.

Sussurations · 30/12/2024 18:14

@LawrenceSMarlowforPresident i like Breton tops too and I think dresses with leggings can work on some women. I also buy a lot from Seasalt (EBay) which isn’t obviously Seasalt. Several of their dress and skirt shapes suit me.

S&B

Style & Beauty

I obviously have neither S nor B! Had no idea!! 🤣

JiminaSlump · 30/12/2024 18:39

I like dresses with leggings - specifically, slightly floaty midi dresses with leggings, like I'm a ballet teacher or artist or something, and flat shoes and a long cardigan over the top.

That's what I tell myself the vibe is, anyway.

Shubbypubby · 30/12/2024 18:41

Long puffer jackets are so warm and comfy. Mn hates them 🤣

Shubbypubby · 30/12/2024 18:41

I too still love skinny jeans.
