Things that S and B hates but are actually pretty great

I have just leaned into being unfashionable and bought a pair of Fitflop trainers, after looking everywhere for comfortable city walking trainers. I expected them to be hideous given the flak they get on here, but actually, they look ok. Minimalist even. And are supremely comfortable. I had trendy Adidas before and they were so hard on my feet. Hate the large, ugly branding on NB, Hoka and other trendy trainers.

I feel the same way about my Seasalt Janelle, now in it's third year, much reviled on here, but I think it looks fine on me and is such good quality. Also my Land's End coat and swimsuit.

What other things do you like that are not trendy, but great quality and you wear all the time?

I've always been very 'me'.

I'm tall and angular. Mad hair.

'Masculine'

Trouser suits..

Cat suits..

Angles...

Clean lines.

Saint Laurent

Pam Hogg

Collar bones and no tits.

Bella Freud flared trousers.

Waistcoats

And sunglasses.

Yes, yes, YES! Have only just become slightly more ‘angular’ again mid-50s after losing 5 stone, and I am all over that list you’ve posted. I’m me again! And a bit of you, it seems 😄

Long puffer jackets are so warm and comfy. Mn hates them 🤣

I think the jackets are ok....its when you remove the arms!
Is there a more pointless item of clothing then a long puffer gilet?

See I find fashion - and especially fashion history - fascinating. But then I'm a very shallow person.

I'll cheerfully own 'shallow' - even 'vain' on a good day 😂 I'm not sure it is, though; fashion's one of humanity's deepest-rooted activities. Some apes demonstrate it! Like music, dance and religion, it's where anthropology meets art, the products of 'spirit' spawning cultural identities, industries, hierarchies, loyalties and wars.

That's not to say I go around revering my brilliantly-cut cargo jeans (the brilliance is in the horizontal leg darts, since you didn't ask) ... but I do carry a background awareness of the style's history and how its symbolism has been tweaked for the 2020s, alongside the sheer pleasure of wearing beautifully constructed clothing. Fashion's wearable art: I can only afford low art, just as I have mass-produced prints on my walls, but it's still worth having..

Plus, it's fun! And functionally necessary 😏

DryRobes

Yes I have one
Yes swim outside year round
Yes it's a daft colour
I also it for watching football and walking the dog.
It's warm, dry and I can thrown it over anything.

I have never seen a long sleeveless Puffa ! Would look like a toga made from a duvet.

However a normal warm / padded gilet covering the torso is great for outdoor sport (also, men wear them under a suit jacket for extra warmth; I’ve also worn one under my coat for outdoor events in winter like football matches, parades.)

I also find fashion and costume design for film and stage fascinating. Nothing shallow about it.

Just to clarify, it wasn't my intention to say I don't care about style, but just occasionally I am surprised by the great design of less fashionable, perhaps poorly marketed products. Which I only hear about on MN.

@henlake7 Yeah I've never understood the point of those. Hot body and cold arms? 🤔

NoCarbsForMe · 30/12/2024 20:37

Um uggs are back in fashion guys...

Just saying.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 30/12/2024 22:17

@sunbum

. And there are surely not many 60y olds that want to dress like 18y olds, and vice versa.

So - if we are discussing leggings with white socks and trainers - is it 60 year olds or 18 year olds you wouldn't expect to dress like that ?

Sussurations · 30/12/2024 22:18

Gilets are great, they keep all the important bits warm but your arms free to move about. Sadly I look awful in them, love a tank top though!

DanceMumTaxi · 30/12/2024 22:21

I still love my Pandora bracelet. Don’t care that they’re unfashionable. Mine is full of charms bought by dh and dc at various times.

Box colours, I love my shiny brown hair, I haven’t had it coloured since the first lockdown. It takes me 10 minutes once a month and costs £5 instead of £60 (probably a lot more now).

@BusyPoster may I ask what brand you use? The one I normally use takes 35 minutes and I'd love to reduce that! Thanks in advance

I use Nice and Easy Root Touch Up and around every 7 months I do the a Nice and Easy all over colour. I leave that one on my roots for 25 minutes or however long it says and then for 10 minutes on the rest of the hair.

Lentilweaver · 31/12/2024 13:18

I also use Nice and Easy box colours. I have jet black hair with no highlights. Can't justify salon cost.

Folks I give you... the fleece gillet. It is fugly as sin and flatters no one. However, it is a brilliant extra layer when you don't need full thickness. Perfect under a light coat, and arguably more stylish than a thicker puffa. I have even been known to double fleece when dog walking.

Just quietly putting my hand up to say I'm also guilty of double fleecing 😨
I have been known to combine a fitted purple jacket with a black gilet over. Okay, they're "nice" fleeces, Trespass ones with a tweedy fleck, but still...So yup, double fleece for dog walking is definitely a thing.

CarefulN0w · 31/12/2024 13:38

I'm glad I'm not alone. 🤣

Breadcat24 · 31/12/2024 13:40

I quite like slippers with bunny ears!

menopausalfart · 31/12/2024 13:49

I've been using box dyes since I was a teen. Would love to have it done properly but going to the hairdresser gives me the fear.😂I shaved all my hair off four yrs ago in a moment of meno madness. Looked terrible but felt amazing!

CoubousAndTourmalet · 31/12/2024 14:02

Think I've covered my style ones but my beauty ones are worse:
I don't wear make-up any more because it just looks really weird on me.
I rarely pluck my brows.
I have long hair over 60 😨and I don't colour or style it 😱
I use E45 cream on my face because as a migraineur it's the only stuff I can stand the smell of.
I have a fragrance free household for the same reason; perfumes make me very ill.
I have no piercings or tattoos.

DanceMumTaxi · 31/12/2024 14:50

I’ve also been using box dyes for years. I have dark brown hair and a box dye is just fine at covering a few greys. Can’t afford salon prices.

CharlotteCChapel · 31/12/2024 14:58

I tried on a gilet (or as they used to be called body warmer) and my DGS said you look silly granny like your coat's lost it's sleeves.

HorribleHisTories15 · 31/12/2024 15:30

I really like peplum shirts, and absolutely despise tucking in shirts into my waist. Peplums help.

I also love a cardigan, it aids with my above described waist affair.

Neutral or basic colours of black, grey and beige are always suggested on S& B. They don't suit black skin on a daily basis; for meetings, presentations or funerals, yes, but otherwise not daily.

Crikeyalmighty · 31/12/2024 15:32

Got to be good quality thick black leggings - I wear them most days under dresses or with jumper dresses etc

menopausalfart · 31/12/2024 15:38

I've only ever worn leggings once in my life. My DM said that I looked like Max Wall.
