Let’s talk about White stuff

Was passing today and I saw this lovely pair of glittery socks in the window suitable for a Christmas present.
Went in there to buy them and remembered what a pile of old shit it is.
Back in the early 2000s it was the place to go for young mums- , who remembers the velvet coats, the a line printed skirts, endless layering , the knitted tights that was quite the look then?

However, it does not seem to have moved on at all. Whilst there is the odd nice thing in there, glittery socks and a lovely gold bag I saw (can’t afford mustn’t buy) It’s just a riot of print with no kind of theme and really poor display.

Do you go to White stuff? What do you rate in there, do you think it’s lost its way?

I have a couple of jumpers and pj bottoms from there as a friend tipped me off (complained) there was a run on unusually long sleeves and legs. Most of it annoys me though- some separates look ok from a distance but then there will be an ‘interesting’ detail like multicoloured speckles or mismatched stripes ffs.

They've changed owners: "You may have heard that we had some pretty big news last week. After almost 40 years of being owned by our founders, George and Sean, we said hello to new owners of White Stuff: TFG London."

I like it as a size 18 tends and quite tall the dresses sit well one me, but they tend to be quite samey.

WhatterySquash · 12/11/2024 21:09

I do think Wendy looks good in the long dress because as others say the print suits her colouring.

The owl bloody hell, run away Wendy!

I have a few White Stuff jumpers from years ago. One of them is a nice burnt orange colour which is what drew me to it, but the quality isn't great.

I find it difficult to tell the difference between White Stuff, Fat Face and Seasalt, and all have rubbish ethical credentials.

ThePoshUns · 12/11/2024 21:28

So frumpy.
My 76 year old mother loves it.
It's a shame as it looks like good quality but awful design and material.

Lifeomars · 12/11/2024 21:31

Oh dear, I have just bought a dress from them as I had a discount code, guess I am just an old frump! I have a lovely White Stuff jacket that i got from Brand Alley ages ago so in my defence I only have two items from them. The company I think are truly terrible these days are Boden, horrible designs, poor quality and horrendously expensive. I used to save up to get things from there, would wear it now if they were giving it away.

Coddy · 12/11/2024 21:33

Lolol

I don’t like Wendy’s dress but do think it’s a good shape for her. It needs about a foot cutting off the bottom though.

Fat Face are head and shoulders above them I think. Decent quality stuff. I’ve bought loads from there this year.

Also, I know I say this all the time, but please, please can we avoid the word frumpy about ourselves and about other women, as well as about items of clothing? It just reeks of ageism and misogyny imo.

IDontHateRainbows · 12/11/2024 21:36

I like the jersey dresses and the thin cardis. Ideal for work and fit my not ideal body shape.
I'm probably their target demographic. Late 40s, large of tum.

The dresses are easy enough to put on in the morning, comfy and stretchy but not too casual for work.

It's got a bit of a Wicker Man vibe to it!

Who made you the thread police?

I'm going to use whatever words I like.

MargaritaPracticallyCan · 12/11/2024 21:38

@Coddy I've had that same bag, but in tan, for about three years. It's lovely leather, goes with everything, is big enough for everyday, very versatile leather tote.

SayDoWhatNow · 12/11/2024 21:40

I go there once a year to exchange whatever monstrosity my mum got for my birthday for a couple of pairs of socks plus a Christmas present for her.

CrankyCatz · 12/11/2024 21:41

They've recently been bought out by the company who owns Whistles, Hobbs and Phase Eight so I wonder if there will be any change to their styles. I used to love White Stuff, I have some really good jumpers from there that have lasted for years and the tops fitted me really well. Sadly I struggle to see much that I like there these days.

Sheepchops · 12/11/2024 21:42

Where is better? I agree white stuff is horrendous, but struggle to find anywhere with clothes I actually like.

Words that are ageist and misogynistic- nice.

But sometimes, frumpy is perfect.

It means dowdy and old-fashioned. I think White Stuff is dowdy and old-fashioned - ergo frumpy.

MidnightMeltdown · 12/11/2024 21:45

I haven't shopped there for about 10 years, but I still have a surviving skirt from there that I still like. It's a checked mini skirt with lining (which seems to be hard to find these days!). Good fit and decent quality.
