Let’s talk about White stuff

Was passing today and I saw this lovely pair of glittery socks in the window suitable for a Christmas present.
Went in there to buy them and remembered what a pile of old shit it is.
Back in the early 2000s it was the place to go for young mums- , who remembers the velvet coats, the a line printed skirts, endless layering , the knitted tights that was quite the look then?

However, it does not seem to have moved on at all. Whilst there is the odd nice thing in there, glittery socks and a lovely gold bag I saw (can’t afford mustn’t buy) It’s just a riot of print with no kind of theme and really poor display.

Do you go to White stuff? What do you rate in there, do you think it’s lost its way?

😅 I hope she's not reading..I don't like the clothes though Wendy herself is attractive in my eyes.

We just don’t generally hear it used about men though, and on here it’s on every other thread. I don’t imagine that men sit around worrying they look frumpy, or bitching about others who do.

Anyway, I’ll bow out. I don’t even like White Stuff, but if others choose to wear it they can’t all by default look dowdy and old fashioned, because an overall look depends on so much more than a dress, even if said dress is from White Stuff.

Agreed, it's unlikely men sit around discussing the relative frumpiness of clothes. But that's because they're men with very different points of reference, and interests. I'm highly unlikely to sit around discussing the merits of the Premier League. Men and women are different. They are allowed to be different. Why do we all have to be a beige, homogeneous blob?

I categorically do not want to be a man, or think like one or have the same points of references, thanks very much.

Just read through this trail in my lunch break to see what alternatives to WhiteStuff, Seasalt etc were considered to be the in-trend places to buy workwear in particular. It seems that M&S/ Ghost/Nobody's Child and Zara might be the places to go for cooler offerings. The problem with the former is that they are invariably very, very long maxis and the latter have the supposedly desirable silky / satiny / stretchy fabrics which look absolutely awful if you have a fuller figure and that stretch is having to go across a less than flat tummy area... A selection of WhiteStuff's Tallie dresses and SeaSalt's Pier Views is perfect to take me from desk to dinner. They aren't loose - they nip in at the waist - and the jersey does not cling where I don't want it too. Totally practical as well - stick them in the washing machine and dry on a hanger overnight and they are ready to wear the next day. As for the acrylic jumpers - yes please - merino wool makes me itch and alpaca is even worse and shrinks - unless lovingly hand-washed. I do agree with many of the posts that ask for bright jewel colours in addition to the wishy washy blue greens and ochre palettes. Hopefully someone from Whitestuff, Seasalt etc will take note. However, I'm still waiting with baited breath for the posts to appear that tell me where else to buy the elusive age and size appropriate "non frumpy" clothes...

KirstenBlest · 14/11/2024 14:05

The men I know do talk about clothes and style. They don't say frumpy, but they say things like 'too middle-aged for me' (yes dear, and you're only 48). Smile
They don't call themselves things like apples and pears.

I hear you. I cannot bear even 5% wool/alpaca in jumpers. And as I get older I just get even more sensitive.

I'm desperate for quality zero wool content jumpers, that still feel soft and warm.

Men worry about different things when it comes to attractiveness, but frumpy, unfashionable clothes can be one of them. The biggies for men are being bald, being short, their weight where they can be too skinny as well as too fat.

Younger men worry about having acne and because of the patriarchy don't get given the same freedom to use makeup to cover it.

Weirdly, men's shoes matter. When I first watched Joker with Joachim Phoenix, I knew I was watching a fantasy because no woman I know would date a man who wore shoes like that.

The patriarchy f us all in one way or the other.

Igavebirthtoabanana · 14/11/2024 15:40

My DH cares very much about how he looks. He’s 57, refuses to shop clothes in M&S because in his opinion it’s for old men. He’s always stressing if he looks “grey and boring” (his own words).

orangetriangle · 14/11/2024 20:34

that dress is awful exactly the reason I don't shop there!!

LyndaSnellsSniff · 14/11/2024 20:48

Every Christmas I get a pair of White Stuff pyjamas. I do love their pyjamas! But otherwise I find it tricky to find things I like. I have a few jumpers but that's pretty much it.

Itoldyousoo · 14/11/2024 20:53

White Stuff used to do great kaftan tops which were really useful when I lived abroad. Now it's a sea of floral. I do venture in now and again and there was a cord dress I toyed with but no...

Seasalt I can't get over the doorstep. I hate the style of most of their dresses with the band and material bunched in the front.

Fat Face - hmm variable ...
I did buy a raincoat from Seasalt and it is fabulous - repelled all that Scottish summer rain and wind 😂
I did get a fair isle from White Stuff last year which are the basis of my winter wardrobe. In fact I didn't realise it had hearts on it until I looked at this pic 😂

I've got the blue fairisle jumper too, however generally I don't like their stuff- fatface and seasalt are very similar too. And why is the colour palette always those warm autumn shades of mustard, burgundy, teal and brown and covered in the same sort of patterns of owls, trees and cats? Those are the worst colours on me!

lilkitten · 15/11/2024 12:38

I used to love their stuff around the late noughties/early teens. I don't know what happened, but I then seemed to find them frumpy. I still wear one skirt I bought there about 15 years ago, but I don't know if they got older or I got younger :-)

I like that, makes a change from all the greys, beiges and pastels in the majority of stores! Pastels look dreadful on me. I really like muted greens and reds but don't see much knitwear in those colours.

This is perfect but too many £££ unfortunately https://www.plumo.com/products/Bristow-Jumper.html

Lorrymum · 18/11/2024 13:56

A bit gutted. Just had an email from Whitestuff declaring 25% off almost everything.
Including the handbag I paid full price for last week!

Take it back, get a refund and rebuy. Or if you’ve used it buy another at discounted price and then return that one with the full price receipt.

Lorrymum · 18/11/2024 14:10

Thanks, great idea!

ThePoshUns · 18/11/2024 17:27

Take it back. Same thing happened to me with some trousers I bought in fat face , they happily refunded me the difference - as long as you haven't used it of course
