Let’s talk about White stuff

Was passing today and I saw this lovely pair of glittery socks in the window suitable for a Christmas present.
Went in there to buy them and remembered what a pile of old shit it is.
Back in the early 2000s it was the place to go for young mums- , who remembers the velvet coats, the a line printed skirts, endless layering , the knitted tights that was quite the look then?

However, it does not seem to have moved on at all. Whilst there is the odd nice thing in there, glittery socks and a lovely gold bag I saw (can’t afford mustn’t buy) It’s just a riot of print with no kind of theme and really poor display.

Do you go to White stuff? What do you rate in there, do you think it’s lost its way?

I am a middle aged consultant in a cerebral but not sexy medical speciality which historical has had a larger number of old patients (although this is changing as our speciality change).

my work wardrobe is a selection of white stuff and sea salt jersey dresses. Inoffensive and machine washable if you happen to kneel down somewhere you would rather not. And they have pockets.

I became a consultant relatively early and I am short and female. I used to wear a suit for the first 10 years of consultant life as otherwise people would insist on talking to my tall male registrars instead of me.

I am now grey and haggard enough that I don’t need to any more.

HorribleHisTories15 · 12/11/2024 18:50

My point exactly @KirstenBlest , Wendy looks great. The colours in her dress compliment her and especially due to her cool hair. But I would need a darker richer blue in that dress.

Happyher · 12/11/2024 18:51

I love white stuff. It has a definite 70’s vibe to it and as I’m 66 I find a lot of things I like - not the big patterned floaty dresses. I like the knee length fitted ones, their summer cropped jeans were great

Shortpoet · 12/11/2024 18:51

I used to love it. Like you said they used to do lovely velvet Christmas clothes and before that very surf cool style.

I haven’t bought anything from there for ages. I do pop in occasionally and am disappointed. There’s their overgrown toddler offer e.g. shapeless tunics with large flowers on the pockets. The dreary muddy colours offer for people who dream of starring in an earnest BBC drama about a downtrodden housewife whose husband was cheating on her and some ugly oversized prints.

Also, the nice things on the website only go to selected flagship stores, not the one near me. Apparently, my town doesn’t want the nice stuff, and only the dreary stuff.

levantine · 12/11/2024 18:53

Is borg what we are now calling fleece? It is everywhere

levantine · 12/11/2024 18:54

As per Wendy's borg gilet

HorribleHisTories15 · 12/11/2024 18:55

Wendy is cool. My dog high fives me in the same way. (Video towards the bottom of the page)

SisterMaryLuke · 12/11/2024 18:58

Going back even 5 years ago, there used to be some nice pieces. Now, fairly frumpy and mediocre.

TheCanaryInThePurpleSkirt · 12/11/2024 18:05

I think it used to be lovely stuff. A bit different and a treat when I had something from them. Now it’s all overpriced tat, shapeless and ill fitting.

Very overpriced.

Agree. It used to be my go to and now there’s nothing in there I like .

CrispyK · 12/11/2024 19:00

A bit like some PPs, I always expect to like it but find myself disappointed. Often too much of the knitwear is acrylic in particular.
come to think of it the last time I bought something may have been around 10 years ago!

Most of my wardrobe is from there Hmm I'm 54, like natural fibres and I love their tunic tops to wear with skinny jeans, nice boots and a cashmere cardie! It's my work uniform.

I'll get my coat......

Me too.

It all fits me well apart from the T shirts which are annoyingly too short. Well made and good quality. Most of my friends wear WS too.

CrushingOnRubies · 12/11/2024 19:01

I find White Stuff quite frumpy and very patterned which doesn't suit me. However I did get a nice denim midi skirt there a few months ago.

I do like the men's stuff though, thinking about getting my df a jumper from there for Christmas

MitochondriaUnited · 12/11/2024 19:04

I like the style.
But I’m not keen on the quality tbh.

And yet I’m often finding myself on their website because I do really enjoy the style…

KitsyWitsy · 12/11/2024 19:05

Just realised my whole outfit is from white stuff. Blue skirt with foxes on and blue jumper with fox faces on.

I dress like a toddler!

mynameiscalypso · 12/11/2024 19:09

I feel like they often ruin what could be something nice by adding a strange pattern or hideous neckline or something like that which turns out from looking current and fresh to looking very dated.

Caitlin Moran wrote a column in The Time a few years ago about how toddlers and old ladies had the same style, dresses and leggings. Her point was that it's comfortable and fun.

I love patterns and now I've got menopausal tummy a loose dress is my friend. I'm glad the tiers are going out of fashion but I bought them because for a while it was hard to find dresses without them.

Enjoy the foxes!!

Introducing Wendy | White Stuff She looks terrific.

What's with the owl?!

TheCanaryInThePurpleSkirt · 12/11/2024 19:16

It all looks slightly “Sound of Music” made out of the curtains, to me.

Not everyone wants to wear ditsy, flowery, frilly smock-style outfits reminiscent of Laura Ingalls.

KirstenBlest · 12/11/2024 19:16

I'd wear the gilet and the boots. The shops mentioned on this thread tend to do the tunic over leggings/jeggings look, which does cover the 'mum-of-young-children' and 'youngish elderly' demographic.

Aren't owls a bit 2014?

Fleetheart · 12/11/2024 19:18

I’ve just got this jumper and I really like it , please don’t say it’s frumpy

JanefromLondon1 · 12/11/2024 19:19

MIL always buys me a voucher from there when DH has told her for at least the last decade that it's the White Company I want vouchers for!!

I sell them to a friend who likes walking in the Highlands. I love her but our dress sense is v v different,

MrsCarson · 12/11/2024 19:20

Wendy does look like most of the people I know who wear White Stuff. I have a couple of teeshirts and long sleeve tops and some socks. (I'm 62) I quite like a few of the dresses, but not the price of them, and they do look like something I'd put on a toddler not on myself.

Gardendiary · 12/11/2024 19:22

My favourite vinted purchases have been from White Stuff, they seem to last really well.

KirstenBlest · 12/11/2024 19:22

I prefer the natural @Fleetheart but that's probably due to my colouring.
