Let’s talk about White stuff

Was passing today and I saw this lovely pair of glittery socks in the window suitable for a Christmas present.
Went in there to buy them and remembered what a pile of old shit it is.
Back in the early 2000s it was the place to go for young mums- , who remembers the velvet coats, the a line printed skirts, endless layering , the knitted tights that was quite the look then?

However, it does not seem to have moved on at all. Whilst there is the odd nice thing in there, glittery socks and a lovely gold bag I saw (can’t afford mustn’t buy) It’s just a riot of print with no kind of theme and really poor display.

Do you go to White stuff? What do you rate in there, do you think it’s lost its way?

I stopped buying White Stuff when they moved away from animal / botanical prints to 1980s inspired geometric patterns and colours.

I wore the ugly 1980s stuff already as a child/teen and have no desire to go back there.

Their new look is frumpy, ugly and ageing. I shop at Seasalt mainly now but do also like Joe Browns and Joanie too.

If they ever loose the button up dresses and eighties prints I will start shopping there again as their jersey dresses fit well and wash well.

orangetriangle · 12/11/2024 20:07

se salt joules and the white stuff to me very old fashioned and I am 55 my daughter is 28 and loves sea salt!!

I like them and then get incredibly disappointed by them. White stuff keep using dull tones. Never a deep navy blue or a rich wine red, but a dull duck's egg blue/ grey and a mild terracotta orange. The tones do not suit my skin tone. That model in one of your pictures @OP has been very good at modelling their clothes for ages, bless her, white stuff colour scheme works for her, but it really doesn't work for many skin tones, until we have a significant amount of grey hair.

Yes, I have the odd piece, but can I go in and buy something just because? No, the colour will likely be off. Fat Face seems to have understood the wider colour palette.

Completely agree. Their pallette suits those who are "spring" cool colouring, but nothing stronger. My sister looks great in their colours, but much too muted for me.

mitogoshigg · 12/11/2024 20:10

I like some of their collections, prefer dat face or seasalt though. Helpfully they are all together at the mall so I'll go into them all!

WestwardHo1 · 12/11/2024 20:10

I find it expensive for what it is (mind you loads is now), and the fit is frumpy and massive. I can never find anything that isn't made for big boobs and wide shoulders. The skirts always hang weird on me too.

I sometimes get a pair of jeans and have had some nice boots.

Astrabees · 12/11/2024 20:14

The men's stuff used to be very good, often if we were browsing DH would be more likely to buy something than me. It has all gone a bit boring and samey now, including the socks. I always have a look around, there are natural fabrics and some of the items add a bit of colour to the rest of my wardrobe.

timetodecide2345 · 12/11/2024 20:15

I admit I used to wear quite a bit of white stuff but now I avoid. I prefer whistles. I even prefer M&S. My DH never got the memo though and bought me some items from there last Xmas. I never even tried them on!

Henrythehappypig · 12/11/2024 20:17

I remember White Stuff and Fat Face being quite “young person” trendy back in the 90s. The idea is so laughable now I think I must have dreamt it.
White Stuff makes Seasalt look cutting edge.

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 12/11/2024 20:18

I went in there for the first time the other day, I rather liked their Fairisle jumpers and the boots were lovely.

Pudmyboy · 12/11/2024 20:20

I got 3 versions of this as it suits me and even though my shape is nothing like the model, it looks good on me. White stuff used to come with a little set of 3 tiny buttons and a message 'you found me!', these dresses came with a tab which said 'life would be dull if we all looked the same' which somehow sounds like they can't drum up any real enthusiasm for their products

What’s not to love about a woolly tabard? 😂

It’s actually bang on trend

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 12/11/2024 20:22

Hideous. Same as Fat Face and Sea Salt.

MissyB1 · 12/11/2024 20:23

I’ve got a lovely velvet coat from there, but bought it about 6 years ago. It’s my “going out” coat, I always get compliments on it. But I went in the other day and didn’t see anything I would want, and the prices were outrageous!

I have this dress and got 3 compliments at work when I wore it last week. I was pleased as I thought it was a bit curtainy.

What's with the owl?!

This was my thought too, the owl is super creepy. It looks like poor Wendy is about to be sacrificed to a local deity.

Lovemycat2023 · 12/11/2024 20:32

I used to think it was all shapeless tunics, but recently got a really nice Chinese style print top (White Stuff at John Lewis) but maybe that’s because I’m late 40s now!

MSLRT · 12/11/2024 20:32

I always think it’s like a poor version of fat face

Lovemycat2023 · 12/11/2024 20:33

I also heard they were auditioning normal people for models recently - looking for petite heights. Sadly I was busy and couldn’t go!

AlhambraQueen · 12/11/2024 20:34

I got a birthday voucher from there from the inlaws and was offended! Stayed in my purse for six months. Ended up buying a bag with it cos they kept asking me what I bought with it.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 12/11/2024 20:34

Their new look is frumpy, ugly and ageing. I shop at Seasalt mainly now but do also like Joe Browns and Joanie too.

Joe Brown's over-design everything, at least in their plus sizes. You'll get a perfectly nice coat for example and they'll stick a lace-up on the back or something.

I have a few bits from White Stuff and I particularly like a teal cord tunic I bought this year - the detailing is really nice on it. I also have an over-sized cream sweater which I'm never sure about but whenever I wear it I get loads of compliments so I stick with it.

Rantypanties · 12/11/2024 20:35

I used to work in a White Stuff shop and it’s definitely declined since the original owners sold it off a few years ago. I used to love using my 50% discount and had so many different things but now I flick though the website and maybe 1 or 2 things pique my interest but often not enough to impulse buy.

Apparently though sales have risen since she’s been in charge (didn’t notice that in my experience and when I do pop into my local shop it’s always dead!) it must just be us who are wrong! 😜

Printedword · 12/11/2024 20:35

I have some great skirts from White Stuff, but all from 3 or more years ago. Their prints have gone dull and fits looser. I still quite like their summer t shirts and some of the Breton tops, but they need to sharpen up their colours. Their handbags are terrific, especially the one with lighter coloured linings so you can see into them to find your keys

Lovemycat2023 · 12/11/2024 20:35

This is the top I bought (more fitted on me) and the colour is good on me despite thinking it would be too yellow www.whitestuff.com/p/4437/Elisa-Mid-Sleeve-V-Neck-Top/CHART_MLT?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAACZTmvaS2Pe4PW4tutSTaOBJOWSXl&gclid=Cj0KCQiAlsy5BhDeARIsABRc6ZtATD_YY4egNMP_EM7VLSRGDziL_fjsb98-CMyw4y4sO-0upBScItEaArMyEALw_wcB

Nice, but my long arms would be incompatible with those sleeves.

Clingfilm · 12/11/2024 20:41

I went in one the other day - I don't have one near me so was excited to see what they had as I quite like the stuff I've seen in ads online - and I swear every woman in there was 5'4 with the same cropped grey haircut. It weirded me out!
I felt 'young' in there and I am definitely not in my prime!
