Let’s talk about White stuff

Was passing today and I saw this lovely pair of glittery socks in the window suitable for a Christmas present.
Went in there to buy them and remembered what a pile of old shit it is.
Back in the early 2000s it was the place to go for young mums- , who remembers the velvet coats, the a line printed skirts, endless layering , the knitted tights that was quite the look then?

However, it does not seem to have moved on at all. Whilst there is the odd nice thing in there, glittery socks and a lovely gold bag I saw (can’t afford mustn’t buy) It’s just a riot of print with no kind of theme and really poor display.

Do you go to White stuff? What do you rate in there, do you think it’s lost its way?

They've recently been bought out by the company who owns Whistles, Hobbs and Phase Eight so I wonder if there will be any change to their styles. I used to love White Stuff, I have some really good jumpers from there that have lasted for years and the tops fitted me really well. Sadly I struggle to see much that I like there these days.

Humpf I used to like Phase Eight but haven't seen anything in there I like for years.

Words that are ageist and misogynistic- nice.

In your opinion. You said yourself it was just your opinion. You are coming across as very controlling trying to tell other posters what they can and can't say.

Anyway

But sometimes, frumpy is perfect.

It means dowdy and old-fashioned. I think White Stuff is dowdy and old-fashioned - ergo frumpy.

I know what it means. I just think that calling clothes dull is far less offensive than calling a woman frumpy, especially when many people go on to associate the latter with women who are older than they are.

Edited

I’m asking if women on a website for women might try to speak nicely about women. Silly me.

I love White Stuff coats. My two 'best' coats are from there, a lovely pink tweed and a purple wool with quilted sleeves.
I really like the crossbody bags and have 4 or 5.
I bought several A line skirts from there a few years ago and they still look good for walking the dog and pottering around the house. They wash really well and have not faded.
I also find their jeans fit me better than any other brand. I am currently loving the barrel leg style.
I also like their pyjamas and they last for ages too.

To me White Stuff is great for practical wear while my real style, sort of winter bohemian/Edwardian is saved for more entertaining occasions.

I must admit I buy all of this on eBay and Vinted. ☺️

Oh and I am 70 years old so quite happy to be part of their demographic!

But the patterns...the tunics... not for me!

KirstenBlest · 12/11/2024 21:58

My mother is definitely not frumpy.

What you wear as you get older changes. Your colouring changes. Your body shape changes. You can look good at any age.

These threads (M& S, Boden, Seasalt, Joules, WS, FF, ...) always result in the same old misogynistic and ageist comments. The shops aren't high fashion and are more for decent quality everyday clothes.

I have clothes from the brands (not many other than M &S) I mentioned but they are staples that I have had or will keep for years. I only have a skirt from WS but it was a pattern I liked a lot and still do.

Coddy · 12/11/2024 22:00

Exactly. Frumpy is descriptive

IDontHateRainbows · 12/11/2024 22:04

I do seem to have acquired a few WS dresses which I wear regularly, if that makes me frumpy so be it, I care not. One of the advantages of getting a bit older ( WS target demographic) is not caring too much what people think of me via my clothing. I probably wouldn't go 'out out' wearing WS but meeting a friend for lunch or something, maybe so.

Caitlin Moran wrote a column in The Time a few years ago about how toddlers and old ladies had the same style, dresses and leggings. Her point was that it's comfortable and fun.

I love patterns and now I've got menopausal tummy a loose dress is my friend. I'm glad the tiers are going out of fashion but I bought them because for a while it was hard to find dresses without them.

Enjoy the foxes!!

Thanks but I’m only 46! 😁

Foxes are awesome at any age.

Her point, which I don't think I made clear, was that those two groups had nailed fun and comfortable dressing and it shouldn't be limited to them!

GetrudeCoppard · 12/11/2024 22:08

Exactly. I think White Stuff is perfect for the older demographic that ‘Wendy’, their model upthread personifies.

My MiL loves their clothes. She’s in her 80s.

AngelinaFibres · 12/11/2024 22:09

GetrudeCoppard · 12/11/2024 18:47

I think Wendy and this sort of look is exactly their demographic.

Is Wendy a lesbian. She's certainly giving that vibe

I was complimented on my outfit tonight at bowling. The guy at the bar said I looked “foxy’. I was pleased lol.

EarthyMamma · 12/11/2024 22:12

AngelinaFibres!
I don't know about Wendy but I am so still happy in my White Stuff clothes.

I will pop into an actual shop next time I am in the Big City to see if WS have replaced the now elusive Lesbian Bar!

I do know what you're getting at Remus but I also feel a bit like I should be able to use what words I like, and frumpy has a very specific meaning and it's how lots of women don't want to look.

Would it be OK if we reclaim it for men too and make sure to use it about them? I just googled "frumpy man" with some glorious results.

I can't find clothes anywhere, apart from outdoor shops.
Everything went into a weird shape at the crotch and waist, and the fabric got thinner and misshaped. Everything is either too long or too short, and the patterns and quality are a shambles.

I haven't bought a decent pair of trousers for years and am cruising along with one single pair of white stuff cords that I am sick to fucking death of.

I saw a gorgeous young woman a few days ago in a wonderful outfit (technically) that I definitely would have worn at her age and now. A long skirt, big boots and a slim fitted jumper. Sadly the clothes were of such crap quality that they hung like something from a clown shop. It's sad because she probably paid a good amount for them. Nothing looks good anymore, I see this on myself and other people, even stunning people.

Chewbecca · 12/11/2024 22:21

I shop there!

Two reasons

  • fabric tend to be natural
  • they do loads of stuff in Short length, this is rare and excellent!

So even if the styles are not necessarily exactly what I want, at least they are comfy & might fit.

I mean if we're going to talk about mostly sex-specific negative words, I'm sorry to be picky but "groupie" is one, isn't it. But I know you probably used it in a tongue-in-cheek way or with an understanding of what it brings with it. Same as I'll use "bitch" and even worse "sexist" words, because I want to, because it can be funny or powerful, and because I don't want to be restricted.

KnigCnut · 12/11/2024 22:25

I have a lovely purple velvet pea coat from White Stuff. I wear it with wide jeans, Doc Martens and my naturally curly hair. I imagine myself looking 1970s glam rock rather than middle aged mum.
Don't disillusion me! 🤦‍♀️

Fireworknight · 12/11/2024 22:29

I had a style analysis done a few years ago. I learnt what clothes and colours suit me. Maybe the WS clothing doesn’t suit your palette. It also taught me not to be snobbish about clothes, so if you see something nice in Sainsbury or an mn ‘approved’ brand, then buy it.

PrincessofWells · 12/11/2024 22:32

I like this jacket . . .
