Let’s talk about White stuff

Was passing today and I saw this lovely pair of glittery socks in the window suitable for a Christmas present.
Went in there to buy them and remembered what a pile of old shit it is.
Back in the early 2000s it was the place to go for young mums- , who remembers the velvet coats, the a line printed skirts, endless layering , the knitted tights that was quite the look then?

However, it does not seem to have moved on at all. Whilst there is the odd nice thing in there, glittery socks and a lovely gold bag I saw (can’t afford mustn’t buy) It’s just a riot of print with no kind of theme and really poor display.

Do you go to White stuff? What do you rate in there, do you think it’s lost its way?

No @Fleetheart , it's not frumpy, quite cool actually with high rise jeans or boyfriend jeans and bovver boots. But I would need stronger, richer, darker colours. Gimme a dark purple or dark green or blue on that jumper, and then it would work.

Fairyliz · 12/11/2024 19:25

No disrespect to Wendy but those outfits do nothing for her. The acres of fabric in ghastly prints just make her look bigger than she probably is; she looks swamped in all of those clothes.

Chewbecca · 12/11/2024 19:26

I shop there!

Two reasons

  • fabrication tend to be natural
  • they do loads of stuff in Short length, this is rare and excellent!

So even if the styles are not necessarily exactly what I want, at least they are comfy & might fit.

GettingStuffed · 12/11/2024 19:27

I like some of the dresses but I always thought it was really expensive. I was getting it muddled up with the white company

Nb14658 · 12/11/2024 19:27

I used to love White Stuff. Back in the day they had great cardigans, bags, jumpers, belts and they lasted really well. Now it's all weird prints and seems "old" even though I'm over 10 years older than when I used to shop there! 🤔

My favourite vinted purchases have been from White Stuff, they seem to last really well.

Vinted is great for WS bargains!

MissAtomicBomb1 · 12/11/2024 19:31

On the whole they're a no from me but I have just bought two lovely fairisle jumpers to wear over Christmas so maybe I'm becoming old & frumpy!

Anicecumberlandsausage · 12/11/2024 19:32

My daughter says White Stuff is mumsy. She wouldn't be seen dead in there. I like some bits in there but I think for the money it's not great quality, and most things only go up to a 16 which is no good for me.

I used to like Fat Face and Seasalt but it's as ll a bit meh, now, isn't it? The patterns are so drab.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/11/2024 19:32

I've never rated it, although I do have one pair of slouchy tweedy trousers from there that I really like. I find the shapes all quite droopy and the colours drab. I like black, grey and jewel colours but there it's mostly drab blues and greens. It's a shame because they do still have some natural fibres and their prices aren't as ridiculous as places like say, Whistles or Jigsaw.

Flatulence · 12/11/2024 19:35

They've always had a lot of odd clothes which mostly aren't my taste and never have been. But I'm in my early 40s and I've always seen their demographic as being a bit older.

But I do pop in occasionally as I love their socks and they have lots of natural fibre clothing - which I much prefer compared to man-made fibres. I've got a couple of dresses and tops from there and the quality is very good and a decent choice for "smart/casual" office wear, especially in the summer.

I don't remember it being much different twenty years ago if I'm honest.

I agree. That dress is far too long and does nothing for her with those boots at that length. All you can see is the big brown chunky end of the toes sticking out. And that gilet - hideous and unflattering. She can get away with that washed out dreary blue though - I’d look like a workhouse ghost in it. Soz Wend mate. Hope you got them free!

RosesAndHellebores · 12/11/2024 19:38

My dd calls it "Shite Stuff".

I like some of it. I have a few dresses called Rua that are fab for work. I also very much like their heavier weight, Jersey, quite tailored leggings.

But I do agree some of it has gone off.

CoffeeneedCoffee · 12/11/2024 19:39

Ok if not white stuff - then where?

lucya66 · 12/11/2024 19:40

Fleetheart · 12/11/2024 19:18

I’ve just got this jumper and I really like it , please don’t say it’s frumpy

Came here to say I own this and I love it. But it does pile (bought with 10% off so £55) and try not to wear too often due to the piling. would buy again tho!

whatisforteamum · 12/11/2024 19:41

We ve only got white stuff and fat face in our town.
Used to treat myself in the sales mainly around 5 yrs ago.
Some nice dresses and skirts then.
T shirts ridiculous prices.
had a couple of pairs of ankle boots.
Last purchase was Tweedy smart trousers.
Cost 65 quid last Xmas reduced to 25 this summer.!!
Bargain however they were never worth the 65 pound price tag.
I would buy jumpers if they were not so expensive.

whatisforteamum · 12/11/2024 19:42

I'm 58 though.

I always
Ways thought it was for skiers! Oops

It was, 30 years ago! It used to be where all the cool MC teens shopped! Until they realized the mums had more money and targeted them instead! See also: Fat Face, Joules and Crew Clothing

Isitfridayyetsophie · 12/11/2024 19:45

joules and white stuff are two shops entirely that passed me by, I only heard of joules via mumsnet last year and I’ve only discovered white stuff from this thread! I’ve just had a browse of their website, they seem to have a few bits that looks okay but styled a bit oddly. It looks a bit like a slightly quirky fat face? Not really my style but my assumption it would be for an older demographic- I’m 37 and I don’t feel like it’s aimed for me, can’t imagine anyone 20s or below shopping there either. Having said that, my mum and MiL are in their 60s and can’t imagine them wearing any of it either? So I guess it’s for women with a specific look!

Berlinlover · 12/11/2024 19:50

I live in Ireland and have never heard of White Stuff but what an awful name for a shop, it made me think of smegma.

I have bought some of those dresses, they have sleeves and pockets and feel great on, as well as the style suiting me!
They are everyday though, not glam (neither am I!)

Schrife · 12/11/2024 19:52

I bought a fair isle cardigan, not worn it overly but the wool has bobbled a lot. I love the sebby bag though

Pudmyboy · 12/11/2024 20:00

I agree they were better years ago, first shopped there in the 2000's, much brighter colours then, if I am remembering properly they used to do a tee shirt with an applique detail on the shoulder blade bit which looked a bit like a tattoo and was unusual/funky then.

MumoftwoGranofone · 12/11/2024 20:00

I used to love WS 15-20 years ago and their sales were excellent but I’ve only bought a couple of dresses from there in the last few years as I just don’t see much I like anymore, the prices seem higher and the quality seems lower …

Lorrymum · 12/11/2024 20:02

Just bought myself a gorgeous teal handbag from White Stuff. It arrived today and Im delighted with it. Real leather, pretty colour and with an online discount it was only £55.00.

WhatterySquash · 12/11/2024 20:03

I've had a few nice things from White Stuff over the years, including plain cardies, a bag, and socks as you say. but there is something about their print design that is just not right - almost always weird colour combos, ugly patterns etc. Frustrating because I'm actually a huge fan of print and colour, but it's like they sit around in the design office competing to make the least appealing prints they can. I've never understood it.

Fat Face I think is slightly better. Some nicer prints, great for PJs, t-shirts and vests.
