I know its expensive, I know its "must have", I know she is a great designer... but I am not sure I like my new bag

DH bought it for me as a present

What do you think?

Is it me, or does it look a bit, well, tacky?

OP posts:
ninedragons · 22/04/2008 15:03

Weird that it's cheaper in USD than GBP. GBP675 is USD1,345 but it's selling for USD1,195.

Rip-off Britain for you, I suppose.

Blu · 22/04/2008 15:12

Who cares what the bag is like when you have such a sweet DH, being sweet and generous!

(I have no bag-judging expertise...but know a thing or two about DP/H's)

Tutter · 22/04/2008 15:12

oh blu, wise words indeed

bag schmag

MrsThierryHenry · 22/04/2008 15:14

Bless you, artichokes, and your lovely, lovely DH for being so thoughtful by buying you a (blardy) expensive bag. I do think it looks tacky, though obviously I don't know what your taste is - but we seem to agree on what counts as a tacky handbag!

Could you perhaps shower him with kisses and appreciation and then just come clean - say it's really not your style and ask whether he'd mind if you swapped it for something (or things) you'll love and wear to death? If you're after a bag Jigsaw usually does fab bags for £70 - £150. Then just think of what you could do with the rest of the money!

If he's anything like my DH he's probably got no idea what you'd like and has taken advice from someone who clearly has bad taste! (Like an overzealous shop assistant with commission-shaped £££ signs in her eyes?). So he'll appreciate your candour and will be delighted to have you parade around in something that suits you better.

Alternatively you could give the money to me (a/c details can be provided!!!)

Okay, that was really a joke. Are you in London? Or anywhere nearby? There's a FABULOUS restaurant where you could treat yourselves to an amazing anniversary meal with the rest of the cash - it's near Warren St Tube and is called 'Archipelago'. It was voted London's most romantic resto (ahhh...how I wish we had the money to go there again). 3 courses plus wine will set you back lots less than £150 total so you'll still have change after the bag plus you'll have treated each other.

Here's a link: www.right-from-home.net/

Okay, I really have to get back to job hunting now, but hope you have a fun (and sickness-free) anniversary!)

xx

Dh got me a bag for my birthday this year, I didn't care how much, as long as we could afford it. It didn't matter if it was £3 from Asda or £100 from high street, all that matters to me, is that when he was buying it he was thinking of and when I use it I think of him. He played safe though and went for black.

Blu · 22/04/2008 15:34

I can't believe all you bag-hags, hankering over the material goods and wanting her to get the top bag of her choice.

It's an anniversary present. He's pleased with himself and beaming. he might never dare buy her anything as a surprise again if she does all this mercenery bag-haggling you all want him to do.

Artichokes hasn't said they are having to sell the baby's cot to finance it.

Blu · 22/04/2008 15:35

"So he'll appreciate your candour and will be delighted to have you parade around in something that suits you better. " no, he won't. That is just wishful thinking.

Actualy, I quite like that bag, and would wear it with 60-esque stuff.

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 22/04/2008 15:42

i would wear it all the time, it deserves to be seen. agree with Blu, as per.

Bag is nice, but not worth 675 notes.

I agree with Sobernow.

I don;lt think that DP has spent 675 on me in the while time we've been together. I got a food processor for my last present off him

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 22/04/2008 16:24

i think all the chiselling about whether the bag is worth it or not is a bit mean, tbh. it's not the point. how do you put a price on lurve, ladies?

artichokes · 22/04/2008 16:34

Lol Aitch. You are making me come over all funny about DH.

I have made my decision ladies. I am keeping the bag and loving it. So what that it is not what I would have chosen, or that it cost as much as my whole wardrobe put together? It is the most thoughtful gift I have ever received and giving it has made DH really happy. That in itself is worth some of the money.

I have bought it to work today and everyone is being uber nice about it. I wore my best suit and heels just to compliment it .

NorthernLurker · 22/04/2008 16:35

Good decision - enjoy your bag

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 22/04/2008 16:37

BRILLIANT decision! he'll be so chuffed.

Libra1975 · 22/04/2008 16:44

So glad you have decided to keep it, agree with EVERYTHING AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek has said so far. It was a thoughtful gift from an adoring husband and it will age beautifully and this oh it won't be in next season is all rubbish, who cares if something is in if you like it continue using it.

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 22/04/2008 16:53

at my stoopid name.

Blu · 22/04/2008 17:10

"It is the most thoughtful gift I have ever received and giving it has made DH really happy"

BRAVO!

modernart · 22/04/2008 19:45

Only just discovered this post, reading through I was muttering "keep the bag, keep the bag". I'm sooo glad you did. 1) it's lovely 2) so's yr DH. Good decision x

expatinscotland · 22/04/2008 19:47

nah, i never chisel about the price of a bag. if someone finds it desirable, go for it.

but i didn't fancy it myself. bit too trendy for me. i'm more a fantasy Birkin bag girl.

but as it suits you, enjoy it!

TLV · 22/04/2008 19:51

its nice, though I could really see myself buying a whole summer wardrobe for 675 quid

Monkeytrousers · 22/04/2008 19:54

Actually I do quite like the brown version.
But I really couldn't spend that much money in good consience on a bag.

I did spend £20 quid on a green polka dot fair trade basket from basket case though for my birthday.

expatinscotland · 22/04/2008 19:56

i got an LL Bean messenger bag for American Mother's Day.

i can't do small bags or even medium ones.

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 22/04/2008 20:02

I'm quite sure that the vast majority of us couldn't countenance spending that much on a bag (although i'd have it in a sale for sure). but it's her dh who spent it, not her. that's the whole point surely? tbh i couldn't in all conscience buy a basket...

expatinscotland · 22/04/2008 20:04

i got a really lovely basket in Shelter for a couple of bob. but it's off the garden variety - as in, carrying things round the garden.

i did take it to the farmer's market, though.

i don't understand how some of you can get away with a small bag like that.

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 22/04/2008 20:08

my bag is her-uge... i always pmsl when the mags say 'big bags in' and then a month later 'big bags out'. aye, right.
