DH bought it for me as a present

What do you think?

Is it me, or does it look a bit, well, tacky?

i've got to say i think this 'won't last more than one season' thing honks of marketing bullshit. it's either a great bag or it isn't, if you like it then it will last. but the fashion industry doesn't want you to feel that way, obv, otherwise you won't keep buying.

seems to me that apart from the underside it's a completely classic hermes-style bag, what's to age?

sophiebbb · 21/04/2008 19:48

I absolutely love it in both the cream and the grey. You are very lucky. The leather must be gorgeous for that price and that means it will age nicely and wear really well. I don't think it is tacky at all simply because the leather will be so nice.

Your DH has fantastic taste!

sophiebbb · 21/04/2008 19:51

PS One Christmas my DH bought me a diamond ring and it is not exactly what I have chosen myself. However I wear it every day and would not dream of changing it simply because he went into a shop and chose it especially for me....that means more to me than anything.

hifi · 21/04/2008 19:52

its lovely, you have to have a tan to "wear" it, dont get it near any denim, never put it on the floor, i always rest mine on my feet.maybe spray it before hand with a protector. lucky girl.

piratecat · 21/04/2008 19:52

but what leather is it for that price then, a rare deer, or the underbelly of a yak or something.

I dont get it.

hifi · 21/04/2008 19:53

yoiu could get some lovely little silver flats to go with it.

brimfull · 21/04/2008 19:54

I think it's really lovely,quite different.

It is such a lovely generous thing of your dh to do-don't return it.

serendippity · 21/04/2008 19:56

'til lovely I am a huuuge bag fan. I only own a Radley tho £160..far cry enjoy!

brimfull · 21/04/2008 19:56

think your DH has been very sweet. However...£675????? OMG!

Some things we have bought in the last year;

Our last car - £170
reconditoned bosch washing machine - £100
2nd Hand Gas Range cooker - £100
2nbd hand Metal futon bunk beds - £30
A black handbag - £6 (asda)
2nd Hand TV - £30
DVD player - £20
Freeview Box - £20
Fancy MP3/DVD car stereo - £60
2nd Hand dining table and 6 chairs - £20
2nd hand wooden fire surround - £30
Garden table and 4 chairs £60

Grand total of £646 so you can see why it would stick in my throat - skinflint that I am!

It depends though - if I was really rich I wouldn't mind!

StillWaters · 21/04/2008 20:09

I think it's lovely, I think it does look expensive and very stylish.

If he's tried that hard I'd tyr really hard to like it if I were you, BUT if you really hate it you'll have to reluctantly admit it (but his feelings will be hurt or a little dispinted).

StillWaters · 21/04/2008 20:12

Oh the grey is gorgeous! the nicest one definetly, your DH chose well imo.

It's suede lined, they have to do something to justify the cost. It's yum.

Oliveoil · 21/04/2008 20:27

how big is it? it doesn't say

I don't really like it personally but DO NOT TAKE IT BACK!

I remember once mentioning I had seen a jumper in Diesel and dh secretly got it for me

it was £150 and lovely but I would have prefered to have gone and got an outfit myself with the money

however, I have worn the jumper to death and think of how sweet he is each time

pooka · 21/04/2008 20:32

I actually rather like it, and I am completely non-bling. The silver makes it look space age, but the leather looks beautifully soft and supple.

Definitely keep it. And your dh, because he sounds like a good egg.

norkmaiden · 21/04/2008 20:34

Oooh yes to hifi's silver flats idea! Repetto or something - lovely!

morningpaper · 21/04/2008 20:38

It is GRAND

Maybe not your choice but I agree, wear it in!

islingtonponce · 21/04/2008 20:42

weren't you on here a while ago soliciting views re said bag? or was that another handbag fiend?

artichokes · 21/04/2008 20:45

I am no handbag fiend IslingtonP - it was def not me!

I have some silver flats . In fact I wore then under my wedding dress so as not to tower over DH. So my anniversary bag match my wedding shoes. Maybe it was meant to be.

Nice bag but at the hideous price tag.
That is more than i plan to spend on our family holiday (if i get round to booking it)

morningglory · 21/04/2008 21:03

I'm not saying that it isn't a lovely bag....it is really nice (I've thought of buying it, too). It IS a "this season" bag due to the metal detail. I bought one of her oversized white bags last year, which I won't will use again this summer, but it looks like an outdated "it-bag". You probably can use it for a couple more years before you might feel it is a bit out-dated.

It doesn't look anything like any Hermes shape (perhaps you are thinking of the Constance bag, which has more of a horse feed-bag shape), but similar to a classic Gucci.

The Ebury is much more classic (that is more evocative of an Hermes bag. (birkin)) or the Carker (which she puts out every year in a different colour).

Again, I think the bag is lovely and an amazing present (your DH is so sweet, and has great taste), but it is an IT bag.

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 21/04/2008 21:05

of COURSE it's a hideous price tag, it's artichokes' DH telling her just how much he loves her... i imagine few of us have spent that much on a bag (i bloody haven't)but imo it's a bit churlish to start calculating what we could get for it, that's very far from the poiint. he's being unbelievably generous, i think that's utterly, utterly gorgeous. och artichokes, accept it, love it, use it, you will make him So Happy.

MrsJohnCusack · 21/04/2008 21:06

I like it
agree, keep it, wear it in, lovely DH

TrinityTheProgressingRhino · 21/04/2008 21:07

I dont like it at all
and £675...well

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 21/04/2008 21:09

as i say, MG, i think that's silly. i utterly refuse to get caught up in marketing rubbish like that. it is not conspicuously on trend, if anything metallics are madly out of date and had their day about two years ago.
it's just a grey bag with a metallic detail, and her husband went into a shop and chose it for her specially. unless she absolutely detests it and would never use it then it would be most ungracious of her to change it for something else.
