I'm trying to make a few changes to keep looking current; I thought it might be helpful for others to add theirs too. I have found it's very easy to suddenly take a look around and find that things have moved on without me noticing 😁, especially as I'm working with ever increasing younger colleagues.

Disclaimer- these are just observations, I am not saying they are all correct or that anyone has to do them.

  • wide leg trousers instead of slim/skinny for work
  • flat shoes for work
  • sports socks instead of trainer socks
  • less eyeshadow

I’ve binned all my skinnies in favour of wide legs.

Bought Birkenstocks clogs.

I tried the leggings and longer socks at the gym but my legs looked like big hams. As do everyone’s. It’s so unflattering I had to go back to my trainer socks.

TallulahBetty · 07/06/2024 12:07

Sports socks or trainer socks - to me these are the same thing? Confused

Bansheed · 07/06/2024 12:08

The socks comment is very true! And all my trousers are wide now.

I would add sheer tops for evening wear And a denim pencil skirt

The young folk wear white socks that stop at lower calf level, so they go over gym leggings.

Candleabra · 07/06/2024 12:19

Big ham legs. Lol. I agree with a lot of these. Unfortunately there are some things I just have to accept that the only reason they’re fashionable is that almost anything looks good on beautiful teenagers.

HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf · 07/06/2024 12:27

I cannot with the socks, and when I ask the young they just go 'dunno, just socks' so that does not help.

The reason I am sock pondering is because I bought a ballerina shaped poplin skirt which I love and wear with bright trainers, but I can't work out the correct dockage.

The M & S wide cropped frayed jeans are a thing of beauty and are cropped enough in petite to be proper crops on shorties like me.

And I want a broderie (sp?) top.

@Maising exactly the same four things as you Grin I'm 45

I was about to ask the same

MaryFuckingFerguson · 07/06/2024 12:41

I wore some really old Gazelles the other day and my son’s gf commented on my trendiness. They’re back in. Apparently.

PragmaticDramatic · 07/06/2024 13:10

Hair accessories to keep up with trends a little without the need for a huge outlay so some bowed and flower accessories for me bought at H&M ( flowers) and bows from Anthropologie.

Didn’t ever do skinnies and primarily wear wide leg jeans.

14-year-old me would be horrified, and would beg current me not to go out like that. Long white socks pulled up! 😱

henlake7 · 07/06/2024 13:15

Im just relieved that proper sports socks are trendy now.....Ive always worn them like this! (I just hate naked ankle bones with trainers!LOL).
Also always wear flat shoes coz I walk funny and my hip hurts if I dont. Mostly go for Converse or Rocket Dogs.
Trousers, I always go for wide legged, cargos or my fav...parachute pants.

Im not sure I really care if Im fashionable or not, as long as Im comfy.
Although Im over 50 and whilst I dont want to look young I kinda dont want to look 'old' either!

Maising · 07/06/2024 13:17

@Wrapunzel I'm 44 so same 😁

I struggle with the sock thing, I still think the hidden trainer socks look better.

I'm also sure I look better with more eyeshadow but accept it is an out of date look atm.

My daughter is trying to convince me I need to move to a side parting.

I still wore some black skinnies and baggy tops in the winter, but now I'm firmly in the wider/flared jeans camp, I have some straight legs, some very baggy ones and some darker flares which are great for evenings.

Shoe-wise, I'm not on trend except that they are all flattish, perhaps 1 inch heel or platform type look, loafers, trainers, cowboy boots, bit of chunk for most of them, no dainty sandals so far.

Layered jewellery, so more than one bracelet/necklace.

Baggier shirts/blazers, have thrown away some of the cute waist length shaped jackets, I love them but they do look a bit dated, plus no-one seems to be doing office-wear so much any more.

I won't be wearing floral midi-dresses whether in fashion or not as I couldn't look worse if I tried in this style, ditto puffy sleeves. I'm also sticking with wrap/v-neck as crew/round neck has never suited me, being short, I look like I'm being strangled!

I'm prepared to change some things but not others!

WayOutOfLine · 07/06/2024 13:19

I don't aspire to look 'young' anyway, I aspire to look a little on-trend and casually nice, so I have ignored the sock issue, that's a young style I don't feel is relevant to me!

Maising · 07/06/2024 13:20

Socks for those asking

I bought one oversized striped shirt to wear last year with shorts, and wore it so much over the summer that I've bought another 2 or 3 and am now living in them tucked into wide leg jeans. Or tucked into a denim midi skirt. I feel quite current but not stand out so, which is how I like to dress.

@henlake7 where do you get your parachute pants from please?

ffsgloria · 07/06/2024 13:35

I stick to a Mom jean or wide frayed hem now.

Understated jewellery & make up.

Always tuck my tops in.

Cannot go as far as the calf length white nike sock over my gym leggings though! Trainer liners only.

At 46 I'm happy with my choices 😆

DancingNotDrowning · 07/06/2024 13:36

I was thinking about this the other day!

like you I’ve switched the socks and wearing mostly wide legs at work.

Can’t quite manage to ditch the 7/8 tailored trousers completely because I’m short and I can wear them off the shelf. Anything wide leg needs to be taken up.

Threw out my last pair of skinny jeans last week - they really feel unwearable now.

but this???

“My daughter is trying to convince me I need to move to a side parting”

I only switched to a centre parting to avoid my DD slating my “millennial style” a couple of years ago, surely it’s not time to go back?!

I thought centre partings were all the rage and youngsters reckon that side partings are “aging”.

DancingNotDrowning · 07/06/2024 13:38

Also swapped out black gym leggings for sage and dirty pink. This was less intentional and more what was available when in lulu lemon last week

Maising · 07/06/2024 13:41

@CormorantStrikesBack that's what I thought too but apparently no more! I can't keep up.

The sock thing.

Vile. I can't even contemplate it. If someone wore ankle socks with shorter trousers in the 90s we'd laugh for a week and call them Michael Jackson or ask if their cat had died (relevance of cat's health unclear, but it was A Thing)
