I'm trying to make a few changes to keep looking current; I thought it might be helpful for others to add theirs too. I have found it's very easy to suddenly take a look around and find that things have moved on without me noticing 😁, especially as I'm working with ever increasing younger colleagues.

Disclaimer- these are just observations, I am not saying they are all correct or that anyone has to do them.

  • wide leg trousers instead of slim/skinny for work
  • flat shoes for work
  • sports socks instead of trainer socks
  • less eyeshadow

I’m not a slim bean but wear high rise. I have a high waist and if I wear anything else, I get a builders bum. I’m a pear shape so high rise suit my figure the best.

I'm the same, and it's not particularly high rise on me

Low rise are so uncomfortable

Do people actively look at someone and think ‘Ooh, Bettys wearing trainers from 2022. How awful!’ Are people really that judgemental ?

(Looks at what one is wearing, T-shirt from m and s that is at least five years old!).

I think people look at Betty and go 'Ooh, Betty looks abit dowdy/fashionable' or 'that outfit is really flattering on Betty'.....
then we try and work out why that is!😁

No point being a slave to fashion if the current fashion is going to make you look like a right twat!
Also it always comes around again. Yesterday I dug out a boho maxi skirt (that still had the label on from 15yrs ago coz I was too fat for it shortly after Id dieting into it!!LOL). It honestly looks like you could of bought it today....

I'm 40 this year so Gen Z are not supposed to look at me and think I look cool, that's just not the natural order of things. I don't want to look like a teenager but neither am I ready to say "fuck it" and give up looking stylish/current completely. I don't slavishly follow trends that I don't like or don't suit me but these are some things I think keep my overall look reasonably fresh/current without being OTT about it.

Understated gold jewellery, hoops or teardrops instead of studs.

Wide leg trousers/jeans- this has always been my preference as its what suits me.

Oversized shirts, neutral and either plain or a subtle stripe. I tend to wear these open, over a fitted plain camisole top or bandeau top

Tote bag or slouchy shoulder bag instead of cross body bag- again this was my preference before it was fashionable as cross body bags irritate me when I'm walking around.

Swapping a cropped denim jacket for an oversized denim jacket or "shacket"

Swapping florals for abstract prints. A 90's style midi/maxi slip dress in a monochrome abstract print with one of the aforementioned oversized shirts and some neutral coloured trainers works well IMO

Sunglasses just low enough that eyebrows are visible rather than pushed right up to the bridge of my nose

Swapping long cardigans for 90's style shorter tie-front cardigans

Subtle make up, eyeliner on top lid only, cream blush instead of powder, minimal eyeshadow

Adidas or Vans trainers in neutral/beige shades, I like chunky trainers on other people but they don't suit me, I think they age me actually.

I do have some midi floral dresses in my wardrobe that I think I can still pull off with the right jacket, trainers and accessories. I never liked skinny jeans so even if they make a come back ill be avoiding as they don't look nice on me.

BoostBar · 30/06/2024 14:05

I can categorically say that wide legged trousers, trainers (usually Gazelles) and a tucked in boxy top is the new floral midi dress and trainers for middle aged women. It’s everywhere.

Which proves to me that most people just buy what’s in the high street shops / wear what everyone else is wearing, so you end up being ‘current’ in that sense, if not necessarily fashionable.

I think I try to follow your way of thinking to a certian extent. I do tend to dress more practically due to weather and physical limitations, so a waterproof parka instead of an elegant trench coat (I hate umbrellas), slim leg jeans or even skinny jeans for tucking into boots due to the mud (I do wear wide legs when it isn't wet). Never gold jewellery as I am cool toned. I really dislike the fashion for chunky trainers so I won't wear them. A pair of trainers lasts me for years so I get a pair in a neutral colour that goes with everything I wear.

I love midi dresses and will continue to wear them. I like to try and update clothes I already have and dislike fast fashion. Sadly, the weather means that I haven't really worn my lovely oversized linen shirt I bought last year as I have been wearing jumpers.

As for sunglasses, sadly, not a fashion item for me as I wear prescription lens sunglasses and have a small head, so just I buy what fits me.

I agree with you post @BoostBar

I have a short waist, long legs and boxy upper body (I've been called "broad", "square", "rectangle"). I find that low waist flares flatter me.

However, I just bought these impulsively from depop - https://www.kookai.us/products/carter-jean-miller-blue. They're bootcut but do they look skinny-ish?

Carter Jean

Introducing a play on silhouettes with the Carter Jean. Sitting high on the waist, they have a slim-fit design and boot leg finish. These full-length jeans will add a retro style to your denim collection. Perfected in a dark blue, their flattering cont...

I've bought myself a graphic t shirt. This one attached. I'm currently wearing it with the other items pictured - jeans & a long cashmere fringed cardigan. My 19 year old DD is very disapproving saying I'm not the graphic T shirt type 😂
I don't think I look too bad.
They're very much in for middle aged women aren't they? Although I admit I'm generally a pretty minimalist dresser & this is a bit of a diversion.

Actually I think graphic tshirts are coming back - the Ganni ones are popular with the it crowd.

It is a very middle aged outfit with the shoes and cardigan. I wasn’t aware that graphic tees were in though? Or in fact that they’d ever been out? I wear graphic tees but they’re the same ones I wore 15 years ago.

And you I'm sure are charm itself?
I don't really care about some randomer opinions on my outfit, though you seem determined to give it.
This is a thread about fashion updates & I'm guessing most of us on here are middle aged.

If you don’t care about randomer opinions on your outfit then why have you posted it on a public forum for randomers to comment?

Also not sure why you appear to be upset? You asked whats in for middle aged women and I said yes that’s a very middle aged outfit.

BitOutOfPractice · 08/07/2024 07:12

Erm, @Cantonet you specifically asked if it were middle aged, the outfit you showed.

“They're very much in for middle aged women aren't they?”

And this is a S&B thread where we, y’know, discuss fashion with a bunch of randomners! People give opinions.

i think graphic t-shirts are a constant, like jeans, just the style / print that goes in and out I have a couple that I’ve had since god was a lad but I don’t wear them often.

Cantonet · 08/07/2024 07:20

No @BitOutOfPractice this isn't a thread where posters criticise other individuals choices if you read it. That's for Aibu.
This is a thread where there are gentle musings on what's in or out. So far there has been no criticism poked at anyone on here until last night.

You literally asked if it’s a middle aged outfit, and I said yes.

BitOutOfPractice · 08/07/2024 08:00

@Cantonet you’re obviously feeling a bit touchy about that outfit because there’s been lots of opinions expressed including of outfit choices that I make regularly! And it Wasn’t even a criticism- it was agreeing with what you’d already said!

DancingNotDrowning · 08/07/2024 08:05

@Cantonet you’re the one that is making snide comments. In relation to a PP personality rather than their clothes, which is far worse Confused

Miriad was agreeing with you that yes it’s a middle aged outfit. Which it is.

DancingNotDrowning · 08/07/2024 08:06

Both doesmybumlook40 and wearsmymoney have done a lot on graphic tees recently so I’m definitely feeling them as a 40 something choice.

Cantonet · 08/07/2024 08:19

In what way am I making snide comments? My original post was talking about graphic T shirts. I didn't ask for a critique of the items I wore with it. But maybe that's fair game for Mn these days. Dare I say it I'm actually 60 & have never worn graphic tees at any age. My style is pretty Classic Bohemian. So it's a new thing to me & I thought style & beauty might be a fun place to discuss this. But it seems to be turning more into Aibu,so I shall bow out of this thread.

nearly61 · 08/07/2024 08:21

Please wait @Cantonet I think that all that was meant was it is a 'middle age' appropriate outfit -ie a great choice and indeed it really does look fab -I'm thinking of branching out and trying to up my style game and it's bang on where I'd like to be

DancingNotDrowning · 08/07/2024 08:46

And you I'm sure are charm itself

you don’t think that was snide? Or the tone of the rest of your post was rude?

It’s difficult to know what you wanted from your post, validation that your choices were youthful? Some people will agree, some will not, but not agreeing, does not equal criticism.

Chocolatepeanutbuttercupsandicecream · 08/07/2024 08:59

I walked past Primark yesterday and they had lots of oversized band T’s in the window with jeans / denim skirts or even worn as a dress with a belt. So I’m guessing they are a current ‘thing’ 🤷‍♀️
I also looked at people’s socks recently and (having dismissed the idea as nonsense) discovered that the millennials = trainer / no show socks and Gen Z = ankle / sports socks trope was almost universally true 😂 I can definitely get behind ankle socks though.. no more leg shaving for the sake of one inch of ankle!

Donsyb · 08/07/2024 09:21

I was just going to say, I usually go by whatever Primark sells must be fashionable as they’re target customers are def not middle aged women 😂 and they have lots of graphic tees.

Also I think maybe the Taylor Swift concerts have helped that as all the young fans attending are buying t shirts and hoodies etc
