What little updates are you adopting to stay current?

I'm trying to make a few changes to keep looking current; I thought it might be helpful for others to add theirs too. I have found it's very easy to suddenly take a look around and find that things have moved on without me noticing 😁, especially as I'm working with ever increasing younger colleagues.

Disclaimer- these are just observations, I am not saying they are all correct or that anyone has to do them.

  • wide leg trousers instead of slim/skinny for work
  • flat shoes for work
  • sports socks instead of trainer socks
  • less eyeshadow

What little updates are you adopting to stay current?

Nothing, because I’m not 14.

Oh wow I just came on to say centre parting but it maybe I'm now behind on that!!!

I’ve just changed from side to centre parting because it was all over TikTok about side partings being for old people!

I am getting so bored of wide leg already, they’re ubiquitous and I wonder how long they really will last? And no, they definitely don’t suit everyone.

I feel like nothing will truly be so far out of style anymore you cant wear it. The current fashion is as much about comfort as style IMO and you wont be able to tell people they cant be comfy anymore!!

As for alice bands, no idea if you can wear them over 50 but I am over 50 and currently wearing one!
Its just a very thin one though.

Can I ask you a question. Seeing as you all seem to be fighting the same battle as me.

Alice bands. Your thoughts. I have collar bone length hair. It’s naturally straight but I sometimes wear it wavy. Do you think 57 is too old for an Alice band?

I can take it.

I’ve bought one but not brave enough to wear it yet.

I have a dd, she doesn't wear one as it hurts behind her ears, but her best friend age 21 wears one most of the time. That or the bandana tied version. I am not sure they ever really went away, did they?

I did see that the banana clip is back though. I loved mine way back when. I have short hair now so I'm not going to be able to love them again.

gardenmusic · 07/06/2024 15:59

Now this sock thing has crept up on me.
Trainer socks for the no-sock look, or if I am playing tennis, and ski socks when I pretend I am skiing.
Black socks under full length black trousers, navy under navy, and some Mand S thermal socks for under boots in the winter.
I cannot bring myself to wear socks with dresses or crops. I started looking at the Toast website, but all the socks made me run away.

perimumma · 07/06/2024 16:03

I refuse to give in to the pressure.

My SIL visibly recoils when she sees me in my skinny jeans and over the body handbag, and I've noticed that she won't stand next to me in the park either, she's the type who wouldn't want to be associated with someone who isn't cool and trendy.

I'm clean and tidy when I go out, that's about all I can give you.

Not if you’re posh. You are posh, right BitOutofPractice?
😬

Tappingthetopfloor · 07/06/2024 16:22

Goes against everything on S&B but yes, unless your names Perpetua then I think 57 is too old for an alice band, as are trainer socks on a 50+ - just a bit too try hard.

DancingNotDrowning · 07/06/2024 16:37

Yeah I’m sorry think Alice bands are difficult to pull off when older - they tend to suit firm jawlines which unless you’re exceptionally blessed tend to be the preserve of the under 25s

Othersideofworld · 07/06/2024 16:40

Parachute pants - get them from the early 90s or was it late 80s?!

NewKnickersNewName · 07/06/2024 16:43

Wide leg but not too wide, hearty dislike of 'flappy'. Perhaps be more selective of better fabric.

I think they must be posh...coz they called it an Alice band!! (its just a hair band to me).
I will continue to wear my hair bands, athletic socks (yes, with skirts and dresses), parachute pants and anything else I deem comfy.
.....its not that Im wearing anything in fashion, its just that some things have come back around and I never stopped wearing them!!LOL😆

Sonolanona · 07/06/2024 16:50

Oh dear.. read all these posts and realise I am decidedly untrendy Grin
Ok the wide leg linen trousers that I may have had for years, sort of fit the bill, but as a rural living dog walking woman.. wide legs jeans just don't work, unless I want to soak up the fields... has to be skinny jeans or uniqlo leggings to fit nicely in my wellies!

I do have and wear cargo pants though when it's not raining!
I'm too old for the sports socks over the leggings.. I think it looks a bit try hard over 50.

Personally I think Alice bands only look ok on teenagers, but that's my perception..if your face hasn't gone south yet, wear and enjoy!

Never wear heels (see above..dog and a practical job!)

CormorantStrikesBack · 07/06/2024 14:59

Yes to the trousers on the floor trend (not me though), I noticed the staff in Zara yesterday were trailing a couple of inches of (mucky) trousers on the floor behind them.

I wonder if this is because there is a lack of skills in needlework and they have no idea how to take them up!!

Phantasmagorically · 07/06/2024 16:55

BigPandaTinyDragon · 07/06/2024 15:28

I can’t do the sock thing at all, it’s so unflattering on most people and definitely on me! Agree about the multiple necklaces thing - I feel a bit prissy if I just wear a single one now but I hate how they get all tangled up - I’m naturally more minimal.

Get yourself one of these nifty things. Stops chains from getting tangled up with one another.

DoYouSmokePaul · 07/06/2024 16:58

Nails - no more accent nail on the ring finger. I prefer a slightly random mix of solid colour and patterned but with a general colour theme if that makes sense. Lots of negative space too. Similar to the below examples (not my hands)

TikTok is great for keeping up with all the trends. Even if it's just to recoil at some of them! I find it confusing that millennial types call no show socks ankle socks when they don't go anywhere near the ankles!

irishmurdoch · 07/06/2024 16:58

DancingNotDrowning · 07/06/2024 14:37

@LimeCookie you’ve reminded me about sunglasses shape. I still favour big squarish glasses but now it’s all about the letterbox shaped oblong..,,

Oh god, not this again! I just found an old pair in a drawer and couldn't believe I'd ever worn them.

Over body handbag…tell me more…what should this be?😆

Daisy75 · 07/06/2024 16:59

What are we doing with eyes if eyeshadow is out? I like a pop of eye colour….

I always found Alice bands very uncomfortable, digging into my head behind my ears so I definitely won't be wearing them. Beside I'm 60.

Alice bands always make me think of Sloane Rangers along with pie crust collar shirts under navy crew neck jumpers. A La 1980s.

Amandasummers · 07/06/2024 17:06

@Maising my daughter claims side partings are an absolute no!!!

Nothing. I don't care.

I hear you! I don't care too, as long as it fits properly and is comfortable. Can't bear seeing people wearing clothes that don't fit properly... gosh I'm turning into my mother 😂

Phantasmagorically · 07/06/2024 17:10

the fashion mags have all said that the side parting is back. it may not be back with teenagers though.
