I'm trying to make a few changes to keep looking current; I thought it might be helpful for others to add theirs too. I have found it's very easy to suddenly take a look around and find that things have moved on without me noticing 😁, especially as I'm working with ever increasing younger colleagues.

Disclaimer- these are just observations, I am not saying they are all correct or that anyone has to do them.

  • wide leg trousers instead of slim/skinny for work
  • flat shoes for work
  • sports socks instead of trainer socks
  • less eyeshadow

@HandaFae apparently a handbag that goes accross the body is ageing.

I call it essential! I'm 45 and rocking it 🤪

squashyhat · 07/06/2024 18:44

Don't ask me - I've just decided a maxi dress, white trainers and a denim jacket do actually suit me. I'm currently at the Barbican in London and let's just say I feel very 'up from the country' (which I am, technically)Blush Grin

Get yourself one of these nifty things. Stops chains from getting tangled up with one another.

Oooh, who knew such things existed? I’ve been wearing two necklaces for about five years (not trendy, just love them both for sentimental reasons - now trendy, woo hoo) and the tangle seems to take mere minutes.

much obliged for this info!

VaddaABeetch · 07/06/2024 18:47

I’ve gotten rid of all my flowery midi summer dresses to the charity shop. Don’t know how I ended up with so many

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/06/2024 18:47

This is a ballerina style poplin skirt, Next do a similar one and I saw one in H&M too:-

I have some baggier sort of wide legged trousers and flared jeans, is that the same as wide leg?

I’ve seen and bought for a younger trendy relative and DM trainer socks like those listed. Two local shops sell them they’ve got a French name but are American. The younger trendy relative wore them immediately and took a photo to show me.

I don’t slavishly follow trends though. I bought two Alice bands but just can’t pull them off and my jaw is firm. I just feel silly in them.

I bought a few over lockdown and wore them but then I think they’re now ditched, apart from one or two I like.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/06/2024 18:51

Re gazelles they’re the only trainer my DB has and he’s got at least 30 pairs. DM has some. I’d wear them only my plantar fasciitis flares up with them.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 07/06/2024 18:52

Hair straighteners. Gone back to my natural wave. Anything floral.

If cross body bags are over, what is current 🤔?

scrivette · 07/06/2024 19:02

Wide legged trousers, longer socks with leggings, baggier t-shirts tucked into wide legged trousers, bought a matching shirts and top set the other day but yet to wear them out, ditched the handbag for a cotton tote bag worn over my shoulder.

I went out to the pub with my 24 year old DSS the other day and he pointed out we were wearing identical clothing, black combats, black Nike Hoodie, black GymShark socks and white trainers. I felt very young!!

TammyOne · 07/06/2024 19:07

Now, I don’t like wide leg trousers but I love a massive skirt. Remember puffball skirts circa 1987? I have a sort of updated, midi version in bottle green. Loads of fabric, lovit.
I wanted to update my sandals, if we ever get Summer, but the sandals in the shops are all those super chunky ones and I just don’t know..I miss gladiators 😁

florenceandthemac · 07/06/2024 19:16

@HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf apparently those cropped sports ankle socks are best with skirts now. Not trainer socks, not crew socks, but just a bit up the ankle

anchorinthetender · 07/06/2024 19:19

I always feel confused in these threads when people reference their teenage and early twenty children as reference points for what in fashion. If I was looking for what was on trend I would definitely be looking at late twenties to early thirties as to what was current. At nearly fifty I have no interest in looking like a teenager but still have an interest in maybe having a nod towards what current and stylish.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 07/06/2024 19:19

Agree!

Catnipcupcakes · 07/06/2024 19:27

Filling in my eyebrows so they’re flatter and less arched.

Swapping skinnies and boots for wide legs and trainers

Stopped wearing tights with dresses, trainers and liners or knee socks and brogues if its cold.

I’m never giving up my Barbour cross body bag. I got my first one 25 years ago and I expect one more will see me out.

visible socks over leggings was the dominant look in the 90s so I don't think it's 'try hard' for someone over 50 to be wearing them in 2024. It's just socks!

It was up until mid 90s. I moved High School in 95 from the Midlands to the North West in Year 9 (3rd year). In the previous school, visible socks worn with platform heels was all the rage. Arrived on the first day at my new school to find it was all kickers with the sock rolled down (like sausages) to not be visible at all.

I had to make some swift wardrobe adjustments, including getting rid of all the friendship bracelets that were laddered up my arms as they were strictly banned!

For those who wear wide leg trousers, would love to know if they work for shorter people? I’m 5”3 and I’m worried I’d look like I’m drowning in them.

suburburban · 07/06/2024 19:47

I wear them and I'm your height.

I probably don't look that great in them. I'm nit long legged. I never know what top to wear with them

I wear a mix of things and I will still wear skinnies in the Winter at weekends etc

TorroFerney · 07/06/2024 19:53

LividPink · 07/06/2024 13:41

The sock thing.

Vile. I can't even contemplate it. If someone wore ankle socks with shorter trousers in the 90s we'd laugh for a week and call them Michael Jackson or ask if their cat had died (relevance of cat's health unclear, but it was A Thing)

I think the trousers were that you were wearing them “half mast” like when they half lower a flag as a sign of respect. Not sure why a cat though!

CharlotteRumpling · 07/06/2024 19:57

Not much except wearing wide leg trousers and jeans. I actually do look good in them as am tall. Not with crop tops like DD though.

I look like a fool in the huge baggy dresses with the massive puff sleeves though.

BigPandaTinyDragon · 07/06/2024 20:03

I thought cross body bags like those Uniqlo ones were quite in? Less so the camera bags with the woven straps. Have I got it completely wrong?

Edited as I hit post too soon

gillefc82 · 07/06/2024 20:03

@suburburban that’s my worry. I’m not particularly long legged either, but at least with skinny jeans they stop at your ankle so you can kind of get away with it if they are a bit long.

I also don’t know what footwear you’d wear? With skinny jeans I tend to go with ballet flats or heeled ankle boots, very rarely trainers. Are ballet flats out too??

I think I’ve still got pairs of boot cut jeans from the early 2000s. Are they good enough to be “trendy” or does it have to be the more slouchy, high waisted, wide leg jeans only??

LondonFox · 07/06/2024 20:04

Ffs I do not want to look like my teenage niece!
I look good in skinny/straight jeans as I got big boobs and wide ones just make me look like a giant tree. Also, they are never long enough unles I spend three digits on them.

On a plus side, there is now very clear difference in style between me and younger people so no one got these idiotic comments of "oh I am surprised you are xyz level at your age".
I ammidfle aged, I dress like it and it looks good on me.

Pinktruffle · 07/06/2024 20:14

HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf · 07/06/2024 12:27

I cannot with the socks, and when I ask the young they just go 'dunno, just socks' so that does not help.

The reason I am sock pondering is because I bought a ballerina shaped poplin skirt which I love and wear with bright trainers, but I can't work out the correct dockage.

The M & S wide cropped frayed jeans are a thing of beauty and are cropped enough in petite to be proper crops on shorties like me.

And I want a broderie (sp?) top.

Share a link to the skirt please?

you're welcome! it's such a cheap and useful thing. I love that someone problem solved it for us.
