I'm trying to make a few changes to keep looking current; I thought it might be helpful for others to add theirs too. I have found it's very easy to suddenly take a look around and find that things have moved on without me noticing 😁, especially as I'm working with ever increasing younger colleagues.

Disclaimer- these are just observations, I am not saying they are all correct or that anyone has to do them.

  • wide leg trousers instead of slim/skinny for work
  • flat shoes for work
  • sports socks instead of trainer socks
  • less eyeshadow

Nothing. I don't care.

Maybe not the thread for you then Grin

..sorry - should have RTFT before reproducing the reply 🙄

@Wrapunzel I'm 44 so same 😁

I struggle with the sock thing, I still think the hidden trainer socks look better.

I'm also sure I look better with more eyeshadow but accept it is an out of date look atm.

My daughter is trying to convince me I need to move to a side parting.

Bloody hell, I've not long moved from a side parting to middle…i though I was ‘in trend’ 😆

The sock thing.

Vile. I can't even contemplate it. If someone wore ankle socks with shorter trousers in the 90s we'd laugh for a week and call them Michael Jackson or ask if their cat had died (relevance of cat's health unclear, but it was A Thing)

Ha so true, wouldn't have been seen dead! Agree with pp it is comfier though, don't mind sock on show but the pulled half way up your leg 😂 no

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 07/06/2024 14:55

I didn't do ankle socks as a kid, not starting now! I have added a flared jean to my wardrobe and they are surprising very flattering and comfortable to wear. I have embraced the oversized look and I never liked clothing that was too fitted, so not much of a stretch. I've also moved to solid colour clothing, some with texture and ditching the pattern, which makes for a much more interchangeable wardrobe. Not sure if it is about being stylish, just that the clothing is currently available that I feel better in, so going with it.

CormorantStrikesBack · 07/06/2024 14:55

Honestly I’m not a trend setter at all but I teach university students and they all have centre partings. 22yo Dd has a centre parting and is very trendy.

Cantonet · 07/06/2024 14:57

Switching to higher neck tops from v neck, in vest tops with a cut out shoulder, hence showing a little skin under a cardigan.
Longer pendant necklace again creating vertical lines over crew neck t shirts.
I'm short & broad shouldered so I'm conscious about looking square otherwise.
Wearing long drapey wide-legged trousers. The fashion seems to be letting them pool on the floor slightly at the moment.

CormorantStrikesBack · 07/06/2024 14:57

I’m wearing wide leg trousers but only with slim fitting/tailored type tops to balance it all out. I think Gok Wan or someone years ago said this was the way! 🤷‍♀️🙈

AcrylicMantaRay · 07/06/2024 14:58

Would someone link to a pair of socks that could be worn with black wide leg trousers please?

CormorantStrikesBack · 07/06/2024 14:59

Yes to the trousers on the floor trend (not me though), I noticed the staff in Zara yesterday were trailing a couple of inches of (mucky) trousers on the floor behind them.

Galliano · 07/06/2024 14:59

I haven't made the sock switch but this thread has made me realise I should.

Think this is for every day wear as well as gym wear?

Are there some additional codes I should be aware of?

Tappingthetopfloor · 07/06/2024 15:01

I am getting so bored of wide leg already, they’re ubiquitous and I wonder how long they really will last? And no, they definitely don’t suit everyone.

Yes I'm concerned about worn mucky trousers bottoms 😂

CormorantStrikesBack · 07/06/2024 15:02

I do also wear bright coloured socks as well. So I have a black and white gingham dress which I wear with black Mary Jane’s and bright red ankle socks. By ankle socks I mean higher up socks

because confusingly gen z seem to call ankle socks crew socks. And call trainer socks ankle socks.

CormorantStrikesBack · 07/06/2024 15:03

There’s a whole Gen Z council TikTok channel which has multiple videos on the sock debate. It’s fascinating.

I don’t want to cause a S&B riot but… I don’t think anyone really looks good in wide leg trousers. Or at least not the ones I see around. Really tailored Kathryn Hepburn ones, yes, if tall and slim and basically Kathryn Hepburn.
So I am ditching all my wide legs (especially the cropped ones) and going back to slim trousers or flares.

Totally agree with this. Baggy jeans and wide leg trousers make me look massive and I’m not. I’m fairly slim with slim legs but wide leg trousers and high waisted Mom jeans make me look ginormous. I can’t buy in to it at all.

Oh.

I wear skinnies, trainer socks and have a side parting.

FFS.

Me too.

I think it's time to find a big brown paper bag and wear it over my head whenever I leave the house.

I'm keeping my skinnies. They fit me and they suit my shape and height.

I'm a believer in sticking with whatever works for you. As a PP remarked, some fashions are in because they look good on people aged 14-21. I know my limits.

It's a balance isn't it of giving a nod to current trends to not look dated but knowing what suits you?

I'm not trying to look like a teenager but also don't want to look like I'm out of date.
Like my daughters are wearing the little handkerchief cropped tops with baggy jeans. I'll try the baggier style of jeans but won't be wearing a crop tops again!

I feel I have found my people on this thread.

I too try to be up to date without slavishly following fashion. But at 57 it’s getting harder.

I too have tried the sports socks look but I cannot, to my mind, pull it off, so I only wear at home as it is very comfy.

I also try and look At what colours are in fashion and look for things in that colour. I have loved the recent green revival as it’s a great colour for me.

I have embraced flat shoe wearing and i All over wide leg trousers for work.

BigPandaTinyDragon · 07/06/2024 15:28

I can’t do the sock thing at all, it’s so unflattering on most people and definitely on me! Agree about the multiple necklaces thing - I feel a bit prissy if I just wear a single one now but I hate how they get all tangled up - I’m naturally more minimal.

benid · 07/06/2024 14:37

It was "has your budgie died" round my way... because you were flying the flag (your trousers) at half mast Grin

We used to say 'are you waiting for a flood', if the long trousers were a bit short, or the shorts were a bit long.

But I am totally in with the new sock thing. I was off to parkrun and my ankles had been swollen all week, so I didn't want to wear my normal trainer socks as that is right where the elastic is. So I shoved on some longer socks and they had to go over my leggings of course. When I got there all my other 50ish year old pals told me I am really in style now 🤣🤣. I don't think the trend started because of swollen ankles though.

BitOutOfPractice · 07/06/2024 15:41

Can I ask you a question. Seeing as you all seem to be fighting the same battle as me.

Alice bands. Your thoughts. I have collar bone length hair. It’s naturally straight but I sometimes wear it wavy. Do you think 57 is too old for an Alice band?

I can take it.

I’ve bought one but not brave enough to wear it yet.
