Who still wears heels?

Saw a woman in heels at lunchtime, in the queue for sandwiches, and just thought, can't remember the last time I saw someone in heels at work. To be fair I work in Government and we are a fairly scruffy bunch. But even on a night out it mostly seems to be trainers or flats.

Still see them being worn a lot where I am.

ducksinarow123 · 04/03/2024 17:45

I love a pair of heels for a night out. I don't wear during normal every day life though, only a special occasion. I won't be getting rid of them

isthismylifenow · 04/03/2024 17:47

Not many fake tans and turkey teeth here.

CatLevelCare · 04/03/2024 17:53

Never liked high heels. I couldn't walk in them and they made my feet hurt. So wouldn't wear them.

I could never understand why women would actively disable themselves with them: can't run away, can't get down stairs easily, etc.

I'm pleased they are so out of fashion now, and the rare time I see anybody in them, just think they look odd.

Pointshopgirl · 04/03/2024 17:55

Never. They look frumpy and old fashioned to me.

Oblomov24 · 04/03/2024 17:58

I only wear them very occasionally, normally a killer heel black patent over the knee boot. Love them. Every mn thread, posters can't comprehend that some of us still like them.

bigTillyMint · 04/03/2024 17:59

bombastix · 04/03/2024 16:53

Nope. It's a way to make you look really old in London

I left them we m in the 80s!

I haven’t even worn wedges or platforms for years, but then I am old 😃

stealthbanana · 04/03/2024 18:00

I love them. Don’t wear the skyscrapers of the noughties anymore but I think a nice block heel with wide legged trousers and a silk shirt is still a classic work look. Heeled boots, evening wear etc.

Flat shoes have their place but often look quite scruffy, especially trainers. And I am not orange, filled or ponytailed!

RampantIvy · 04/03/2024 18:05

I don't like some of the sneering on this thread at women who wear heels - frumpy, old fashioned, Turkey teeth etc.

I don't wear heels, not because I think I am more fashion forward than people who do, but do we really have to denigrate women who do?

2024theplot · 04/03/2024 18:14

It seems that most of the women under 45 at my work wear heels every day, but we have a very smart dress code in the office.
I was out clubbing at the weekend and noticed most women were wearing heels again (whereas up until then it's usually been a 50/50 split with Gen Z wearing trainers, Millenials in heels, older women in other flats).

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 04/03/2024 18:16

I know one woman at work who wears heels a lot - she looks very nice and elegant but really stands out. She’s in her 30s and the only person I ever see in them.

We work in a fairly casual environment and most people are in eg black jeans, smart ish top, trainers or boots at this time of year. Once it warms up women at work will wear more dresses with eg Birkenstocks or trainers.

tillyandmilly · 04/03/2024 18:18

They look old fashioned now - definitely wouldn’t wear them -

Happygirl79 · 04/03/2024 18:20

Nope.
They are old fashioned.

sawnotseen · 04/03/2024 18:24

I do still wear heeled shoes/boots but with long wide leg trousers so you don't see the heel, just the toes of the boots. Not worn heeled shoes with a skirt/dress for a long time and don't see many people doing so around central London anymore.

HideTheCroissants · 04/03/2024 18:26

harriethoyle · 04/03/2024 16:40

I wear them every day.

To reassure a pp, I have my own teeth, my own skin colour is unenhanced and I'm pretty sure I'm not orange, I don't have fillers and I don't have a facelift ponytail. Judgey much? 🙄

Same here! I’m short with quite big feet for my height - if I wear flats my feet look huge! Admittedly I don’t wear the vertiginous heels I used to when I was younger (and never found uncomfortable) but rarely wear anything less than 2 inches or so.

bombastix · 04/03/2024 18:27

@bigTillyMint - I am not young but I am not going to risk looking like an ageing drag queen by wearing them out.

ybotsemaj · 04/03/2024 18:29

DGPP · 04/03/2024 17:35

I would never not wear heels to a wedding or awards do
Everything else gets flats.
russell and Bromley do lovely flats

Yes I concede weddings and black tie.

Anything else looks weird these days

43ontherocksporfavor · 04/03/2024 18:29

Rarely but might for a night out depending on outfit. The highest I have now are a chunky heel.

StoneTheCrone · 04/03/2024 18:30

I saw a few people at the theatre on Friday night in heels and a stunning blonde woman going into a solicitor's office this morning was wearing a very nice pair of black D'orsay heels - not too high - about three inches. Someone i work with wears kitten heels. I wear boots with low chunky heels but i dont think that's what you mean.

i think they still have a place in formal settings. I always think the Royals and guests look fabulous when they wear them.

Kittythecutest · 04/03/2024 18:32

My work enforces a very smart dress code and I’d say around 50% of women are in heels daily. I don’t see them around day to day though, aside from chunky boots.

I go to a lot of black tie balls, and 95% of the women there are in heels, myself included. I wouldn’t feel right in a black tie gown and flat shoes to be honest.

Maireas · 04/03/2024 18:40

People keep insisting no-one dresses up nowadays. On another thread someone said people go to the theatre in London in old joggers with holes in! I thought that was awful, so I'm glad some people are dressing for the theatre, @StoneTheCrone

Cotswoldmama · 04/03/2024 18:40

I wear the nearly everyday abd not fake tan or fillers here either! I wear chunky ish loafers and heeled ankle boots, sometimes I wear flat ballet pumps

JustRollWithIt · 04/03/2024 18:51

Being a 90s party girl it still astounds me that girls these days actually wear trainers when clubbing. Love that. But I do think heels make people look and feel really elegant and they elongate the legs etc (if paired with the right classy outfit).

Tootytoot78 · 04/03/2024 18:52

I still wear them occasionally and I love them!

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 04/03/2024 18:56

afternoonsunshine · 04/03/2024 16:56

I don't think they will be back any more than Chinese foot binding will be back

I bet that's what women in Jane Austen's time thought, with their lovely, comfortable dresses. A couple of decades later, women were in massive crinolines.
