Who still wears heels?

Saw a woman in heels at lunchtime, in the queue for sandwiches, and just thought, can't remember the last time I saw someone in heels at work. To be fair I work in Government and we are a fairly scruffy bunch. But even on a night out it mostly seems to be trainers or flats.

How come loads of celebs at the Brits were wearing heels if they are frumpy, dated and old fashioned?

It's rare to see them in London now, but they will be back. Everything comes around again.

I hope to be dead by then though!

I don't think they will be back any more than Chinese foot binding will be back

Alwayswonderedwhy · 04/03/2024 16:56

I've not worn them for years and even if they were still in fashion I wouldn't. My feet just hurt too much.

Thirsty

clim · 04/03/2024 16:57

I guess black tie / evening gowns are the last outfits to 'need' heels.

maybe they think they will be able to afford the medical bills privately?

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 04/03/2024 16:58

Celebs are the thirstiest creatures in the universe.

Moier · 04/03/2024 16:59

Ruth Langsford she can't walk in them. They once showed their feet on loose women and Ruth's were awful misshapen and bunions.

needahouseindurham · 04/03/2024 16:59

Every single day for work. I don't feel right without them

Tbf I had bunions from around 9 years old - genetic on both sides of my family.

But why? Whats the point? Wear something comfortable instead

rightoguvnor · 04/03/2024 17:02

I have a pair of 'interview shoes' that are about 1.5in high. Not worn in 5 years.
And I have a couple of pairs of dressy sandal-ly type shoes with heels about 2.5in. Last worn for Xmas do (not a work do).
But I wouldn't go any higher nowadays, and wouldn't contemplate them for work. I like something with a bit of platform though as I'm rather short.

ILoveSalmonSpread · 04/03/2024 17:03

I can't stand the bloody things.
Years ago ( I'm ashamed to say) we used to call them Tarts' Darts.

The men in my team were always suspicious of women who wore them thinking that there was something ( again I'm ashamed to say this!) slutty about a grown woman who preferred to walk awkwardly with her arse sticking out ( which stilettos seem to do) rather than walk comfortably.

Even now, on a very rare evening out I see these ladies in their darts and the vast majority seem to be struggling to walk properly.

Walking comfortably is a sensible thing to do.

Oh, and my last employer had a real problem with darts as they'd ruin the parquet !

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 04/03/2024 17:06

My 17 year old dd has high heeled DM's. They are definitely having a moment.

StrawberryJellyBelly · 04/03/2024 17:15

I wear kitten heeled sling-backs almost everyday. I love them. But I also love the flats and wedges and and and and every other style of shoe I have.

High heels are now only worn on special occasions which happen about once a month because I’m almost 66 now and my artificial knee aches a bit after a few hours when I wear them. Not that they were responsible for me needing a new knee in the first place.

henlake7 · 04/03/2024 17:16

I wish I could wear them (not the pointy ones but chunky heeled boots or wedges). Unfortunately I over pronate to the point of joint pain so Im stuck with very few options.

TheChosenTwo · 04/03/2024 17:24

Occasionally i’ll wear them if I don’t have to walk at the destination, because they look nice with the rest of what I’m wearing - if I have to walk for any distance beyond about 50 metres I’m changing my whole outfit for one of which suits flats.
Mainly heeled boots, haven’t worn anything pointy and uncomfortable for years now.
I don’t dance unless I’m really drunk but I hate dancing in flat shoes, don’t know why but I just feel so stompy!!

RampantIvy · 04/03/2024 17:30

If manufacturers invested in designing more beautiful flats

I wish they would.

I think heels look elegant, but I can't wear them. Arthritis and flat feet mean I have to wear sensible footwear.

I hate pointy shoes as well. They make me think of bunions.

Does anyone else have an advert for microwavable slippers in the middle of this thread? Grin

Thank you for the new word @clim. Every day is a school day.

IggOrEgg · 04/03/2024 17:33

I wear heeled boots quite often. Otherwise mid-height block heels for weddings and that’s about it!

DGPP · 04/03/2024 17:35

I would never not wear heels to a wedding or awards do
Everything else gets flats.
russell and Bromley do lovely flats

sarahc336 · 04/03/2024 17:37

Heeled ankle boots a lot in winter

Purplecatshopaholic · 04/03/2024 17:39

harriethoyle · 04/03/2024 16:40

I wear them every day.

To reassure a pp, I have my own teeth, my own skin colour is unenhanced and I'm pretty sure I'm not orange, I don't have fillers and I don't have a facelift ponytail. Judgey much? 🙄

Me too, lol. Still love my heels, although I probably do wear lower heels more often than 8 used to these days. For now anyway…

ButterflyTable · 04/03/2024 17:40

Seriously don’t know why people wear heels anymore!! So out of date

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 04/03/2024 17:41

Me - well I will again when my lymphodema clears a bit. I love them. I also like flats, saddles, boots - everything apart from trainers really. To me, no different from wearing make up etc. Oh and no fillers, turkey teeth or pony tail or fake tan!

EcstaticMarmalade · 04/03/2024 17:43

I can’t remember the last time I saw anyone in heels tbh. Have mine to the charity shop a few years ago. I still have a couple of pairs of wedge sandals in the wardrobe more for holiday memories than anything.
