Who still wears heels?

Saw a woman in heels at lunchtime, in the queue for sandwiches, and just thought, can't remember the last time I saw someone in heels at work. To be fair I work in Government and we are a fairly scruffy bunch. But even on a night out it mostly seems to be trainers or flats.

I cringe when I see Kate Middleton in her skyscraper heels in the daytime. So old-fashioned and uncomfortable - not really a great role model for girls.

My theory on her mystery surgery is that she's getting her bunions done 😉

Me! Only own 3 pairs of flat shoes. Even have a pair of wellies with a heel. I love them - chunky, wedge, spindly. Not stopping for anyone (or fashion)

Seriously don’t know why people wear heels anymore!! So out of date

Maybe we're not as tall as you!! 😉

Imnotarestaurant · 04/03/2024 19:06

I do for weddings or the rare night out where it’s a taxi door to door.

The last time I wore them was for a night out for my 40th and lots of other women (both younger and older) were wearing heels.

I remember wearing heels on nights out in London and running for the tube or train-couldn’t imagine ever putting myself through that again!

Rolypolyup · 04/03/2024 19:08

I love heels!
After years of wearing steel toe boots, frumpy mum shoes and then work shoes everyday which have to be flat and wearable for all weathers, no flats match the feeling of wearing a nice pair of heels.
I love wearing heels when dressing up, they make me feel confident and pretty and my date outfits and night out clothes don't feel the same without a pair. I don't care if they show my age because they make me happy.

Punkkitty · 04/03/2024 19:08

Interesting discussion!
In my previous profession spanning early noughties to 2018 I wore proper killer heels every day, it was the norm.
Changed careers and now only wear them for weddings/funerals/formal do’s etc etc.
Saw a woman today at training (healthcare) and she had black pointed stilettos and she looked like a bit of a relic if I’m honest. The most I see now is a heeled boot in winter or flatform/wedge in summer in work.
I think it might an industry related thing.
Fashion wise things deffo seemed to have moved away from heels.

What have heels got to do with being a good role model?

this reminds me of the scene in Some Like it Hot when the ‘girls’ are about to board the train and MM suddenly skeeters along the platform when the train exhales steam- every time we watch this film I wonder at her balance - or as ‘Daphne’ declares, “like jello on springs”

PoW does look old fashioned in high heels, but then her formal dayclothes are
She looked fabulous in the gold lame dress and heels

PrimalLass · 04/03/2024 19:16

I have some to flog on Vinted so hopefully someone still wears them!

Because little girls tend to be obsessed with princesses . Who's a better princess role model - Anne, or Kate, teetering around on her skyscraper heels to open a school, or whatever?

The 90s called, Kate luv, and they want their stilettos back.

Yes, she looked bloody amazing in the gold dress - and has great legs, anyway, so doesn't need high heels for day time.

zaxxon · 04/03/2024 19:22

Cork wedge sandals in summer are still ok though, right .... Right?!? Love mine so much

Beaverbridge · 04/03/2024 19:22

I loved them back in the day. I had them in all the colours in the 80,s, couldn't walk in them now. Very unusual to see them now.

clim · 04/03/2024 16:53

My MIL reckons that wearing flats is akin to wearing wellies 🤣
Which is hard to not take personally when my shoes of choice are flat docs

I love my wellies. I'd wear them in bed if I could.

I don't like some of the sneering on this thread at women who wear heels - frumpy, old fashioned, Turkey teeth etc.

I don't wear heels, not because I think I am more fashion forward than people who do, but do we really have to denigrate women who do?

I totally agree @RampantIvy . What happened to respecting other women's choices that have precisely NO impact on you? It's really unpleasant.

Riverlee · 04/03/2024 19:27

Went out at the weekend. Was surprised to see quite a few people wearing them. Maybe it was the venue, but there were no (or very few white trainers). Most had boots of various descriptions on (flat and heeled).

Why does it have to be Kate or Anne? Princess Di generally wore low heels or flats and always looked so confident, fashionable and elegant.

RampantIvy · 04/03/2024 19:32

And the bitchy comments continue Hmm
Why does it matter if other people wear heels? How does it affect you?

I can't wear heels, but don't care if other people want to.

donteatthedaisies0 · 04/03/2024 19:37

The interesting thing being that it was men who used to wear the heels . Can't remember the time period . I'm sure someone who knows more about that time period will inform us .

EleMar · 04/03/2024 19:39

I still wear heels! I love a simple elegant outfit with some nice heels and a small handbag to elevate the outfit.

I have already explained why it's a bad role model for girls, for CM to do this. I couldn't give a toss if normal women do. I also said upthread that she has great legs and looks amazing, so I'm hardly tearing her down.

I'm sure the PoW is touchingly grateful for your concern, though.

WhateverMate · 04/03/2024 19:40

I rarely see them now except maybe on TV.

The are terribly old fashioned and I'm glad to see the back of them, as I imagine the young women of today will have far better feet in the future, when they're my age (50s).

SOxon · 04/03/2024 19:42

also, I found, carrying whopping babies, inside and out, living in the country and walking or running for the twice daily bus, wearing wellies, trainers or sensible sandals, meant my feet splodged and widened.
from living in London wearing dainty heels, Italian shoes narrow and elegant, to a mum also stone heavier (making cakes, see other thread) my feet swelled and I not only moved up half a size but needed wider fitting.

I would love to wear heels now I live in the town and never wear brown, even though my lifestyle precludes the necessity. Life is full of hollow compromises n’est ce pas.

Yes it is unusual to see them now.

The only time I see them irl is as part of a ‘mother of the bride’ section in the posh Dress Agency, mauve, oyster, pale blue instruments of torture, worn once, then put up for adoption

mitogoshi · 04/03/2024 19:46

They are more common around here compared to London in my experience

donteatthedaisies0 · 04/03/2024 19:47

I also remember the tory mp who caused uproar for saying women shouldn't wear high heels because if they get attacked they can't run away . I was attacked while wearing trainers , I fell over trying to run away . A man who knows nothing how your body reacts when you are in panic .
