Who still wears heels?

Saw a woman in heels at lunchtime, in the queue for sandwiches, and just thought, can't remember the last time I saw someone in heels at work. To be fair I work in Government and we are a fairly scruffy bunch. But even on a night out it mostly seems to be trainers or flats.

I don’t think heels have gone away forever or no one wears them anymore. They will always have their place.

I guess it’s more there’s been a significant shift fashion wise away from heels being standard office/work/everyday fare for women.

Obviously there are still places that they are the norm but they seem fewer.

Yes, it was nice to see people dressed up (Birmingham) but I believe people dress up more the further North you go.

Skinny jeans are back. They were on the miu miu catwalk this week. Everything comes back again at some point. Leandra Cohen does a great newsletter which highlights upcoming trends and she always seems to be about 6 months ahead of the curve.

For me they will always be a symbol of oppression so I am delighted that they are no longer required to be worn in many jobs as they were when I was young.

Foot binding and overly tight corsets were also once fashionable and I hope that high heels will be consigned to history this century in the same way.

This. When I started work in the 1970’s, we were told that we had to wear skirts and high heels - gradually trousers were permitted but many make (and female) bosses were unhappy about that and discouraged it. Consequentially, many women of my age have painful foot trouble; bunions, neuromas and lower back problems etc. Just had surgery to remove 3 neuromas - they were agony and the surgeon told me that he’s always seeing women of my age.

Skinnies and heels are back guys! Kitten especially

It’s the best news ever that they’ve gone. I have always hated them. As a teenager / young woman I rarely wore them, but when I felt I had to I couldn’t bear it. I felt so vulnerable and obviously they’re so painful. Every step you take is a THING.

I’ve now not worn them for about 20 years and very rarely see anyone in them. There’s one woman at work who wears them and tbh she stands out and looks antiquated!

Plenty of heels at a party I just been to, and hardly a white trainer in sight. Less so for everyday living, although I have noticed there’s fewer dress /white dress combo around this year, and more sandal wearing.

GettingStuffed · 21/07/2024 13:32

I was up in the North East earlier this year and on Friday and Saturday night heels were out in force along with glitter and sparkle.

Mirrorcat · 21/07/2024 13:44

I work in a fairly ‘trendy’ industry in London (not fashion) and I’ve not seen any of the younger people ever wear heels and that’s not an exaggeration. Like never! Even for evening events.

As a teenager I couldn't wait to wear heels. By the time I was 14 I was taking a UK 9/EU 43, and when I needed school shoes my mum would take me into Clarks and they'd bring out their "size 9 collection" - four or five pairs of flats in the sludgiest colours imaginable, and often much too wide. For some reason designers back then seemed to think that if you were a woman with large feet you must only want to wear things that looked as if they'd been dredged up from the bottom of a river, and your feet must be as wide as they were long. By my 16th birthday I could usually only buy men's shoes, and I had to be careful which trainers I was grabbing in the hallway in case I took my dad's or my older brother's by mistake. I got teased a lot at school, especially when a male physics teacher came in wearing the same patent brogues I had. When bigger sizes for women gradually started to appear across the full range of styles, I bought a pair of heels. I was ECSTATIC. Finally I was going to look pretty and stylish and there was no risk of my brother wearing these to play football!

By the end of the second day I'd realised that there was no risk of me wearing them either. 😳Talk about a letdown. They felt like something the Spanish Inquisition might have designed when they were in an extra bad mood. It's so strange to think of how desperately I wanted them and what a big thing they were in my eyes, especially now I hear other women saying how they found them painful all along and never really liked them.

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 21/07/2024 14:14

I’ve noticed no one really wears them now.

I still see them for sale so some people must wear them on occasion.

Ive worn heels once this year - to a wedding. Seems to be for very formal/dressy occasions now.

Littleguggi · 21/07/2024 22:47

At 5ft1 I've always liked a heel however since COVID I've only worn them to weddings and Xmas do's. I prefer a blocky heel now like something from Esska. I don't care if heels are 'dated', they'll soon be all the trend again. Plus they help to complete a dressy outfit.

Marchintospring · 22/07/2024 06:23

I do get the painful thing but I think that was always part of the glamour. Like pointe ballet shoes. It was fascinating watching women that could actually wear heels all night.

I have very wide, flat feet as a result of hyper mobility . They only look pretty in boots or heels as flat shoes make my ankles look enormous. I wear flat DMs or high tops but sometimes they distract from a fabulous dress.

henlake7 · 22/07/2024 11:36

I dont think very pointy high heels will ever make a proper come back (for everyday wear, rather then dressing up or impractical fashion magazines).
These days comfort seems to be much more important!

Def not those white stilettos I used to wear as a teenager anyways!😬

RampantIvy · 22/07/2024 11:39

I agree @henlake7
