Who still wears heels?

Saw a woman in heels at lunchtime, in the queue for sandwiches, and just thought, can't remember the last time I saw someone in heels at work. To be fair I work in Government and we are a fairly scruffy bunch. But even on a night out it mostly seems to be trainers or flats.

My MIL hates my footwear because I don't wear heels. In the 90s I wore block heeled platforms but never thin heels. For the past 20 years I have worn flats and i will never go back to heels. My MIL says they make your legs look nice and make you walk nicely. Like a lady FFS.

Why does it have to be Kate or Anne? Princess Di generally wore low heels or flats and always looked so confident, fashionable and elegant.

especially on the evening of the black dress, high heels, never more stunning

Diana swam and yoga, excellent deportment, regal, 5’10” still wore high heels

I also remember the tory mp who caused uproar for saying women shouldn't wear high heels because if they get attacked they can't run away . I was attacked while wearing trainers , I fell over trying to run away . A man who knows nothing how your body reacts when you are in panic .

While MPs shouldn't be telling women what to wear, or victim-blaming, it's a hell of a lot easier to run in trainers than heels. The fact that one woman fell over in trainers does not make this less true.

There's a reason why the line-up for the 100 metres rarely features a stiletto...

Craftycorvid · 04/03/2024 19:53

I spotted a colleague in stiletto heeled boots today and did a double take as this is someone I don’t believe I’ve ever seen in heels. They looked very smart. I had a momentary pang of nostalgia for my late teens and early twenties when I was never without my heels. I stopped wearing them when someone warned me about what I was doing to my poor feet - though healthy feet are actually ok with occasional high heels. My then boyfriend’s mum and sister never wore heels and somewhat frowned on women who did - see also makeup. I think it wS the pressure to conform to their norms that led me to the land of the brogue and the flat sandal. I couldn’t walk in heels anymore - tried some a few years ago and was crying with the pain in about three steps. I do think very formal outfits create a headache for the non-heel wearer as formal ballgowns do have a line that demands some height. I would also have a headache if invited to a smart wedding for the same reason - flats are very challenging to style with formal dressy outfits.

Keepitwarm · 04/03/2024 19:56

I've bought a pair to wear for a wedding in the summer but they're a mid heel, well made. They'll be getting kicked off in favour of flats when the dancing begins though

SillyCrab · 04/03/2024 19:58

This is so interesting.
I do wear heels everyday, not stilletos but a block or wedge heel 2 or 3 inches.
I don't like brogues, I think they look like mens shoes. Ballet flats hurt my feet. Flat mary janes look like giant toddler shoes.
I'm also 4'10 and shorter than some of my year 5 pupils - I don't want to get lost in the crowd in assembly.
I'm surprised people see them as try hard, I honestly don't look at people's feet.

Microwave slippers? Hard yes.

Every chazza in London is packed full of heels. I gave my classic prada ones and ditto louboutin ones to a teen.

I wish I could wear them but movement wins.

What on earth is a chazza

I would assume a charity shop.

SallyWD · 04/03/2024 20:03

Nope. Only if I'm going to a wedding which is very rare these days

Thudercatsrule · 04/03/2024 20:05

I wear heels everyday for work, black suede shoeboots, red maryjanes, blue suede, thin heels and a strap even have a leopard print pair that i wear with a black dress, and i love them.

I work in London and i'll be honest i dont even look at other peoples shoes. And i dont care what people think about what im wearing either.

Whats old fashioned? Heels in general or stilettoes?

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 04/03/2024 18:59

I cringe when I see Kate Middleton in her skyscraper heels in the daytime. So old-fashioned and uncomfortable - not really a great role model for girls.

My theory on her mystery surgery is that she's getting her bunions done 😉

Meghan wore the most fabulous high heels, some absolute stunners, Kate has always worn the same style of shoe in various colours. Neither of these women make me cringe with their fashion choices, what an odd thing to say.

readingmakesmehappy · 04/03/2024 20:09

Nope. Always hated them and then spent the covid year living in slippers or trainers and swore I'd never wear them again. They are grotesque.

The fact that CM has worn the same shoe for 20 years is kind of the point.

Heels with formal wear were the norm till somewhere around the mid-2000s. They now look very old-fashioned with day wear.

UtterlyButterly2048 · 04/03/2024 20:26

So many mean girl comments on here! I love them and have so many pairs. Don’t wear them for work everyday, but for going out? Always wear heels, anything from a wedge to a chunky block heeled boot to a stiletto. Not sure they are going out of fashion either, I was shopping at the weekend and they are still for sale everywhere, lots of people buying them, all different ages. Also, a much younger relative has her prom in June and she and all her friends are wearing heels; they, like me do not have “turkey teeth” or wear fake tan!

PinkPondQueen · 04/03/2024 20:33

But... What on earth would you wear with a smart dress or suit? I rarely wear any type of heel anymore but some outfits would look completely shit without them... I'm so confused by this. Hoping someone with more of a clue can enlighten me?

Tomlettegregg · 04/03/2024 20:39

I actually love the look of heels and would wear them more but because nobody else does you feel really conspicuous. Obviously flats are more comfortable and practical especially if you live in a city and don't drive everywhere. Navigating the tube or cobblestones in stilettos isn't fun but I think they make me look better. Taller, slimmer and yes more glamorous.

HiGunny · 04/03/2024 20:40

I still wear heels for work sometimes and for nights out etc. I'm short so have been pretty much wearing heels since I was a teen. I don't wear stilettos anymore though - can't walk in them and they do look dated now. I'd go for block heel, kitten heel or wedges these days.

You've just been trained by fashion to think they look shit. Do you think men in suits look shit without heels?

Personally I wear loafers or smart trainers, most of the time at work. I have some more delicate flats for smart dresses.

Mmm, not really the arbiter of UK street fashion, is she, though?

I always wear heels I have about 40 pairs I absolutely love heels and will still be wearing them when I’m 90

In your world maybe, but no not everyone wears flats with formal wear, just because you say it doesn’t make it true.

It isn't just me though, is it? That's why the heel-lovers are so defensive. You know it's true that they are passé.

Personally, I think heels will come back to some extent, because they do make one's legs look good. But, at the moment, they look really old-fashioned with day wear (except weddings). And no one needs to take my word for it - just look around you tomorrow, and see how many women are in them.
