Who still wears heels?

Saw a woman in heels at lunchtime, in the queue for sandwiches, and just thought, can't remember the last time I saw someone in heels at work. To be fair I work in Government and we are a fairly scruffy bunch. But even on a night out it mostly seems to be trainers or flats.

There is a MASSIVE difference between Australian and European fashion/style.

From some of the outfit suggestions I have seen posted here, that is really, really obvious.

I'm pretty fashionable and often described as 'stylish'.

I'm coming to the UK in July/August and am really a bit concerned I'll be judged for my outfit choices.

I'm attending a fancy family wedding too, so that is very tricky ground it seems!

I've never felt out of place in London, or anywhere else in Western Europe. But I'm from Melbourne which generally has a very different style vibe to say, Sydney or the Gold Coast where it's so much warmer most of the year.

@Lostsadandconfused I'm from London and have lived in Sydney and Melbourne (and Paris) and would say people in the UK are no better dressed than Aussies.

I would agree with you from previous visits, I've never felt out of place. But lately I've been a bit nonplussed by some of the examples posted in s & b threads, of what is and what is not fashionable in the UK currently. And in particular recommendations for wedding guest wear.

I live in an inner Melbourne suburb btw.

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 06/03/2024 05:06

Loathe them. Cannot see the appeal.

I was in Rome on holiday last summer and this young Roman woman who obvs worked in an office (amazingly put together, beautiful dress, hair that wasn't sweaty and grim like mine, despite the heat) was tottering along the cobbled street in heels. I.was in awe.

Tortoise2go · 06/03/2024 05:24

From my time in Australia , you see all kinds of outfits , just like the UK. Obviously overall its warmer so there's more skin out and less formal , especially work and weddings but that's changing in the UK too.

backatschool · 06/03/2024 05:40

I live in Asia in a large city, still plenty here. Also plenty of trainers/flats too. Whatever works with the outfit. I still wear them on a night out here as do most of my friends.

Tomlettegregg · 06/03/2024 05:53

Yes obviously there's variations by city but they're not major. Melbourne people wear more black, there's a lot of athleisure in Sydney and on the Gold coast it's a bit flash. In Byron there's a more hippy, relaxed vibe. Londoners are not exclusively well dressed. I'm sure lots of them wear heels despite this thread. I think the s&b board can be haunted by some very opinionated women..

Heels are alive and well on cruises especially the more traditional ones which have formal evening dress. Haven’t seen a daytime heel in ages.

I wear heels every day and will until I’m 90 I’m 57 I have gorgeous heels very trendy from river island snout 40 pairs I dress up every day always have always will hence my user name lipped everyday to 🤣🤣

Myotherdogsanoodle · 06/03/2024 07:18

I’m surprised people think that heels have completely had their day. Don’t you lot ever look at Net a Porter? They’ve been, gone and come back round again, as happens with fashion. It’s kitten heels at the moment, apparently, which is good news for me as I’ve got boxes of them from last time (though I doubt I can squeeze my bunions into any more ☹️)

43ontherocksporfavor · 06/03/2024 07:24

I love a heel just don’t wear them really bar a couple of pairs of kitten heels and a chunky, high heeled, strappy sandal occasionally.

RampantIvy · 06/03/2024 11:57

Those would be heels to me @Merrymouse

Shakespeareandi · 06/03/2024 12:20

Don't like hight heels, don't wear them. Although, I did wear wedges to a wedding last year. I'm only 5.4 and all the women I knew who were going are much taller than me, so wore wedges to be a bit taller. Heals will definitely come back in fashion. It will be a "new" thing to many younger women and so will be cool and "fresh". Same with skinny jeans, they will be back in fashion too in a few years. Haven't seen mini skirts for while. They must be due for a revival. I know short dresses are but haven't seen many mini skirts.

RampantIvy · 06/03/2024 12:42

They may not be "in fashion" according to the fashionistas, but they never really went out of fashion TBH.

I don’t think the reason why people are not wearing heels is to do with fashion. I think it’s a more fundamental shift. It’s about people wearing more informal clothing in most contexts, particularly at work.

I agree about work. My mum's generation was a bit shoulder pads and vertiginous heels to show ambition (only as a woman obvs)

So glad it isn't like that now, be smart and hygienic (obviously) but it has nothing to do with wearing crippling shoes, or trying to look taller.

I was of that generation. I never wore heels, only DM’s.

NecessaryNC24 · 06/03/2024 13:19

Respect 🙌🏻.

bombastix · 06/03/2024 13:27

I've known a few men do heels and shoulder pads owing to height!

NecessaryNC24 · 06/03/2024 13:43

But do you find them more attractive for it?

bombastix · 06/03/2024 13:47

It's all about charisma
