Does this ring look good on me? Tiffany Etoile "engagement" ring

DogFish614 · 06/01/2024 11:23

I loved the Tiffany Etoile engagement ring when we got engaged 15 years ago, but couldn't afford it. Went with a generic sticky-uppy prong setting, looked lovely but I could never get used to wearing it (sensory issues, also I am clumsy with a hands-on job). Eventually sold it and just wore my plain platinum wedding ring.

DH suggested getting an anniversary ring. I'm not keen on eternity rings, and in my browsing, found a few Etoiles (now long discontinued) for sale.

I've tried one on and it's so smooth and comfortable - it's 0.35ct in platinum. I love it. It's got all its paperwork, had it checked out in Tiffany with the owner, it's a great price. But I have zero sense of style so am not sure if it looks awful or nice, if the diamond looks too small and the band too big, etc. I'd be very grateful for opinions from you stylish people. Honesty is welcome! Thank you.

Edit: argh sorry for my giant hand. I can't resize. My ring size is actually small (H1/2 UK).

@DogFish614 having had a ring that wasn't what you wanted, get what you love and find comfortable. Get it resized and polished up and when you collect it ask to try other suitable wedding bands alongside it.

Personally I don't think the ring sits well against your wedding band, when the Etoile's the right size it may look a bit different but you can decide that for yourself.

I don't think I have ever noticed anybody's ring unless they've pointed it out to me. I certainly know I've never looked at anybody's hand and thought that a ring did or didn't suit them. Honestly, just get the ring you like, as I doubt anybody else would ever notice unless you asked them to.

Loopytiles · 06/01/2024 14:49

you say you have sensory issues and use your hands at work. To the point where you sold your original ring. I’m the same, and only wear my wedding and engagement ring ad hoc. If was going to spend on jewelry I’d get earrings!

FlamingoQueen · 06/01/2024 14:50

Could you swap them around so you wear your wedding ring on top of the other one?
But, if you really love that ring, then get it. I’m currently wearing a non wedding band and my Grandma’s engagement ring. They don’t go at all, but I like it!

DogFish614 · 06/01/2024 14:50

Just to clarify I'm not paying a big mark-up on the ring for the Tiffany name, because it's second hand. It's less than it would cost to have it made by the local independent jewellers in my area (we got quotes).

I've got similarly narrow fingers, and don't think that's the right style for them. The band also looks bulky next to your wedding ring.

What about this one - it's not got a collet that sticks up and would look good on slender fingers?

https://www.tiffany.co.uk/jewelry/rings/elsa-peretti-wave-single-row-diamond-ring-GRP07721/

All of that said, if you love it, that's really all that matters.

Edit just to say I love the second ring, but if you didn't find your previous one comfortable, might that one be the same?

Edited

If you don't like clawed settings then this type of rub over setting would be ideal. I have to agree that I think 'prongs' are for special occasions only. (And no occasion is special enough as far as I'm concerned)

Justia · 06/01/2024 14:51

I prefer the second ring, you have small delicate hands and the etoile is very chunky on you.

The wedding ring isn’t doing you any favours.

If you must have the etoile then change your wedding ring to a thicker band maybe with diamond set to add interest?

Or don’t wear the wedding band.

BasiliskStare · 06/01/2024 14:51

@DogFish614

So here are mine - Please ignore my hands on the photo - they are not as elegant as yours , but have put rings on both ways round in case it helps. I usually wear wedding ring first , then engagement ring . Both etoile . My hands are not as red and wrinkly they appear on the photograph ( honest guv - probably kidding myself ) , but in case it helps ( imagine rings with your more elegant hands. Mine is 1 carat so the band will be thicker than yours. ) So much more elderly hands than yours but here in case it helps . I love mine

You must choose what feels right for you . As you can see there are so many lovely rings and so many different opinions .

I'm glad I'm not alone! Although my sensory fussiness extends to my earlobes and neck - I never wear earrings or necklaces. Or bracelets. I can tolerate a watch and a smooth feeling ring on my left hand.

Ohhh @Poppies26 and @BasiliskStare your rings are just absolutely gorgeous. Thank you so much.

I like it.

Justia · 06/01/2024 14:58

The Elsa Peretti stacking band ring or Tiffany true wedding band could work.

And excitingly there is an etoile wedding band!!

Their wedding bands are gorgeous.

diddl · 06/01/2024 14:58

I like the first but don't think it matches your wedding band as well as the second.

The first in a similar width to your wedding band would be fabulous.

DogFish614 · 06/01/2024 14:59

GingerGill · 06/01/2024 14:08

I have the etoile (in just over .6 carat) and the matching wedding band. I love them! So easy to wear…..and yes chunky, but I love chunky jewellery. Had them 17 years and love them as much today as I did then ❤️

I'd really love to see yours too! Pretty please 😊

To answer some other questions, yes I'm definitely open to wearing the other way around, I'm not superstitious about taking off my wedding ring. I don't have the Etoile with me to take a photo unfortunately.

I LOVE your matching Etoile wedding band @BasiliskStare and also your diamond band @Poppies26 (that's the Jazz / Swing band right?) I am thinking pairing with a diamond band may be the way to go.

To the pp (@SoFar2024IsABitCrap ) who asked if changing one's wedding ring is wrong - nah. It's just jewellery. DH accidentally threw his out at the tip with the Christmas tree five years into our marriage, so he has no moral high ground on this. And our luck has been just fine. What I would suggest is to keep it rather than trade it in or sell it, if possible.

I love the etiole and I think go for it - but I’m biased as I have an etiole engagement and wedding band! I’m not normally a brand person at all - but being from
Tiffany’s makes them really special for me!

Raincloudsonasunnyday · 06/01/2024 15:01

I don’t think it looks odd enough to notice. But what IS lovely is that for your anniversary to got the ring that you always wanted. I think that’s much more heartwarming than how a ring looks.

So funny I just posted about the etoile wedding band!!

@DogFish614 do this. It looks stunning!!

ViolinSpin · 06/01/2024 15:01

You have very elegant hands OP and the first one doesn't suit sorry - to me it looks chunky.
The second one looks beautiful.
I hope you find something you like.

onceinabluemoon2 · 06/01/2024 15:02

I love it but then I have one myself but my wedding band is the same width and chunkiness as the Etoile so they're balanced. I've never been one for big diamonds and statement pieces that 'stick out' but wanted something smooth that wouldn't catch. I've had it for over 20 years and still love the simplicity and wear it every day and it's just there, not aware I'm wearing it. But, as I say, I'm not one for flashy rings or bling.
Choose what makes you genuinely feel good about wearing it and what will make you happy.

DogFish614 · 06/01/2024 15:02

@Grumplechops ooh! You know what I'm going to ask don't you? Pretty please 😊

@Justia I am liking your thinking on this!!

This is my Tiffany wedding band which I wear by itself as I said earlier in the thread.
It is flat and easy to wear.
I don't love the feeling of rings and as a play therapist have lots of clay, sand and paint I need to wash off my hands.

DogFish614 · 06/01/2024 15:04

@onceinabluemoon2 I can't believe how many secret Etoile wearers there are! Where have you all been on on the "Show me your rings" MN threads I've been poring over for days trying to find one??!

Any chance of a photo? 😊

I think the most important thing is to wear what you love OP.

ireallycantthinkofaname · 06/01/2024 15:06

If you love it, wear it, and bugger what anyone else thinks about how it looks. It's not on their finger so it doesn't matter!!
