Is it even a dress?

OP posts:

It’s definitely bullshit because you’ve made it up. Why are you unable to divorce what someone wears from other aspects of them?

crumblingschools · 20/12/2023 18:17

This photo looks more like underwear than a dress to me.

Did David Beckham go to an awards ceremony just wearing Armani pants?

And I see very few male footballers as role models to young boys/children especially when they start going down the full on celebrity route

It was also a dress with flesh coloured panels under the lace. Will people stop commenting as if she was half naked. They sell similar tops in M&S.

This section is Style & Beauty not Sport.

Has everyone who has criticised posters talking about the dress and not her accomplishments started a thread about her accomplishments, if not why not?

But that's a cropped photo......

I have in the past (under a different name) and I've commented publicly on her achievements a number of times.

catotangent · 20/12/2023 18:25

And she didn't wear underwear to the ceremony. It was a dress.

There's an underwear section, knickers, on show.

LadyKenya · 20/12/2023 18:28

Whatever she was wearing, dress, or whatnot, it did her no favours.

KissTheRains · 20/12/2023 18:36

I don't get it.

Woman wears a dress.
Some like it, some don't.

Discussing the dress doesn't take any of her accomplishments away, of it did, then those accomplishments must be very fragile, barely accomplishments at all.

If it's possible to take someone's accomplishments away by discussing what they wear, is it possibly to give people accomplishments if they dress well enough?

Would Sam Smith be a better singer if he didn't dress like a cock? 🤪

borntobequiet · 20/12/2023 18:50

It’s a pretty horrible dress.

It's a horrible dress. I can't imagine why out of all the gazillions of options available you'd pick that one.

Yes, this is S&B. Yes, as someone has said up thread, her achievements have been recognised elsewhere on MN.

But S&B should not involve slagging off someone else’s style.

crumblingschools · 20/12/2023 19:13

Surely the designer purposely designs clothing like this for people to discuss. I've looked on his website and most of his stuff is out there, with nipple tassels etc. It's not your average shopping in Tesco day wear. Surely this is why he designs stuff like this so it gets noticed. There was nothing special on the skirt side of the dress, the bit everyone is talking about is the fact that it is pretty much bra and knickers with a bit of black material tacked on the bottom.

Stencilplasttic · 20/12/2023 19:23

Well it's sold out! Does look marginally better on the model than on Mary who could have looked fantastic but just not in that dress unfortunately

crumblingschools · 20/12/2023 19:25

Looking at that link, why are people saying there are flesh coloured panels, there certainly don't seem to be in that picture

This sums up why this thread (and others) have made me feel uncomfortable.
It's not critiquing a particular style or fashion trend, it's slagging off an individual and the specific outfit they chose to wear to a high profile event.

Completely agree (sadly) @Movinghouseatlast & @DarkDuvet

The version Mary is wearing clearly has flesh coloured panels. You can see them on the video.
The outfit will have been customised for her.

Yes, I agree, the fabric very clearly visible.

ElaineMBenes · 20/12/2023 19:38

In fact @crumblingschools the picture you shared earlier clearly shows the flesh coloured panels. You can see the wrinkles in the fabric.

Hedjwitch · 20/12/2023 19:40

Great person,tacky ugly dress.

catotangent · 20/12/2023 19:46

Definitely a dress. Here

I didn't say it wasn't a dress. The knickers and underwear feature of the dress, and worn for an award ceremony, is what's causing the debate everywhere.

Canthave2manycats · 20/12/2023 20:55

Movinghouseatlast · 20/12/2023 12:06

I'm a feminist through and through and I thought the dress was ill thought out.

The trouble with 'if you've got it flaunt it' is that it often plays to the male gaze. To me that dress summed up porn in the mainstream- it was lingerie dressed up as a dress. She looked like she was about to have sex, which is what men like to see.

There is no male equivalent because generally women don't objectify men and dress them up to be a visual stimulant.

I guess tge equivalent might be if Gary Lineker had showed up in tight leather bondage gear and a gimp mask or maybe a sailor suit.

I'm all for women wearing what they want but I think often women have internalised what men want to see/ what men consider sexy and attractive.

Can you explain to me how a woman looks like she is going to have sex?

*Asking for a friend...

PaperWalkAndTalk · 20/12/2023 20:58

It's a dress that looks like underwear, and looks like something from Ann Summers.

We regularly see dreadful dresses at the Oscars and don't have endless arguments about the actresses' careers and achievements.
