Is it even a dress?

The underwear as outerwear trend has been massive this year, as has 90s style clothing. This is clearly a nod to both. It's also absolutely fine - I was expecting something outrageous from the comments! As for unflattering - she looks sensational. Don't understand these comments at all! Good on her.

Puffypuffin · 20/12/2023 06:11

Agreed.

Exactly, I knew I'd find this thread on here. And likely an equivalent in the Daily Mail. Boring old misogynistic bullshit.

There was a story in one of the tabloids last week about the Clooneys “braving the cold weather” at some do, but of course Amal was the only one in the skimpy dress. George was wearing a suit. It’s enraging.

Yeah, why is Clooney wearing a boring old suit?

CharlotteRumpling · 20/12/2023 06:23

It's not as bad as I thought it would be. All her toned muscle makes it look Gladiator rather than TOWIE.

Mummyoflittledragon · 20/12/2023 06:24

shearwater2 · 20/12/2023 06:13

So fucking what?

Men are NOT the default agsinst which all women's fashion choices should be compared, contrasted or measured up.

That is highly misogynistic in itself, as if nothing that she wore which is in any way traditionally feminine would do and she is no good unless she dresses like Gary Lineker.

That in itself is a false equivalence. No one said she should be dressing like Gary Lineker. Regular women’s clothes do exist, which fit the female form without being very revealing or uncomfortable. The fact that no male equivalent exists is highly relevant. I get the concept of underwear as outerwear and I’m sure some pieces are flattering. I still have a silk Tara Jarmon camisole from the last time this was in vogue but this outfit is far further along the scale.

WillowTit · 20/12/2023 06:29

she looked unrecognisable
fantastic

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 20/12/2023 07:08

On Strictly some of the dresses have flesh coloured fabric panels to make them look plunging etc.
I think Mary’s dress was made from it with the lacy stuff attached, as there were definite wrinkles on her side.

Mirrormeback · 20/12/2023 07:16

The knickers part lets it down considerably

AboutYouTalk · 20/12/2023 07:27

1 - she didn’t deserve to win over Stuart Broad or KJT, their achievements far outweigh hers. I suspect the move from Sunday evening to weekday had an effect on voting numbers.
2 - women in sport, especially in football, want to be taken seriously yet act like the lads after a match, swearing and drinking. Pretty sure the male professionals are no longer like this which makes the women look like they are stuck in the past.
3 - her dress looked like something out of Love Honey, tacky beyond belief. Young girls look up to her and she goes onto a serious award show looking like the red district. Hard to take her seriously after that.

Alex Scott didn’t look much better either. Claire Balding and Gabby Logan classy as usual.

CharlotteRumpling · 20/12/2023 07:34

I still take her seriously and would be happy for my young DD to look up to her. As I do Alex Scott.

I might not wear that, but then I am old and staid.

CharlotteRumpling · 20/12/2023 07:38

Just looked up Alex Scott's outfit. I think she looked great. I used to have a body like that; wish I had the nerve to wear that back then.

Really tacky looking dress.

MrsDrDear · 20/12/2023 07:45

This is S&B. We discuss award show outfits for Oscars etc.

The dress was shite. However, KJT looked lovely.

BitOutOfPractice · 20/12/2023 07:48

Slothsandspiderman · 19/12/2023 22:24

FFS she wins SPOTY and we are slagging off her clothes.

A new mumsnet low

This.

I wonder how many men who have won spoty have had their outfits dissected like this.

crumblingschools · 20/12/2023 07:52

@BitOutOfPractice if the men wore an outfit that had their pants on show I’m sure people would be commenting.

In my mind underwear is called underwear for a reason!

On a more practical note, if that is an all in one dress how do you go to the toilet (especially if you are in a hurry)?

Metallicant · 20/12/2023 07:52

Awful dress. Looked like something from Ann Summers.

  1. Getting to a WC final and being Euro champs is up there with anything the other finalists have achieved.

  2. Male footie players consistently find themselves on rape charges/suspended for "nights out" the Lionesses are very well behaved in comparison.

  3. Her dress was stunning, its her style choice and i assume you wouldn't be able to carry it off, due to too many take ways.

Or as my mum would have said "you are just jealous of her & her youth"

FrillyGoatFluff · 20/12/2023 07:59

It's allowed to be hugely proud of someone's achievements and still think they made an inadvisable fashion choice.

She's fab, a hugely worthy winner. The dress wasn't fab, in my opinion. But if she liked it, who cares 🤷🏻‍♀️

It's highly unlikely that she'll give a shiny shite what I think (as I give my opinion sat here in my primark jimjams), and neither should she!

grayhairdontcare · 20/12/2023 07:59

The dress looked cheap and I'm sorry but Stuart Broad should have won sporty.

Yes he should - totally.

Blaggingit123 · 20/12/2023 08:28

Just looked at it again and while I don’t really like it, I don’t think her underwear is on show it’s just part of the dress surely?

also it’s a public vote and ‘sports personality of the year’ not lifetime achievement or best sports person. I expect she won by an absolute mile and it’s well deserved.

@jasflowers - So true!

Despite what others are saying, a woman has to do twice as much as a man in almost any sport to achieve recognition. Women footballers hitherto were not taken seriously.

Whether people like the dress or not is not relevant; it was no more a dress competition than Strictly. She has shown she can turn up in a dress and destroy an incorrect stereotype of women footballers, who do not have to exist in track suits.

Their behaviour has been excellent.

Anyone else remember Gary Lineker doing MoD in his pants?

NashvilleQueen · 20/12/2023 08:51

Stuart Broad should only have won if more people voted for him than they did for any of the others. That's how it works.
