Is it even a dress?

Brown shoes with a grey suit are an offence against good taste. It seems to be a generational thing, nobody would have dreamed of it 20 years ago.

shearwater2 · 20/12/2023 10:38

Stuart Broad is just another nepo baby cricketer. Yeah, he's pretty good at what he does but so is Earps and he has had an easy life compared to almost any high level female footballer, ever, and he had a damned good start in life if he wanted to be a cricketer. Women were banned from playing football at all by the FA until the 1970s. For fifty years.

I think people who are very fucking knowledgeable about sport and all the prejudice women have had to face are voting for Earps. Not knowledgeable, MY ARSE.

😴

NashvilleQueen · 20/12/2023 10:40

The problem with SPOTY, of course, is that anyone can vote. If only knowledgeable sports fans were voting, the results might be different

Condescending much?!

grayhairdontcare · 20/12/2023 10:45

@shearwater2 I'm sure the women of sport would prefer to be voted for on achievement not being female or because they had a spat with Nike and nearly won the World Cup 🙄

They got to the World Cup Final after winning the Euros, is that not enough for you? Earps was a huge part of that.

Winning the SPOTY is always about who has been in the news.

The men drew the Ashes and the Aussies kept them. And were absolutely skittled in the World Cup.

shearwater2 · 20/12/2023 10:50

And the spat with Nike was a very good thing anyway. Nike were being absolute dicks.

You obviously never met my father. Sometimes his shoes didn’t match each other.

Like is said its personality not achievement.
A spat with Nike over a shirt not for sale.
The euros were in 2022 .

Thatfeatherthere · 20/12/2023 10:58

Those of you saying Stuart Broad should have won - what for exactly? He reached the 600 wicket milestone but that was something he's accomplished over a very long career, not this year. And he's retired.

I say this as a Notts cricket supporter, so definitely not biased against him.

BitOutOfPractice · 20/12/2023 11:08

@MargaritaThyme i can assure you I know plenty about sport. I live right next door to a county cricket ground and attend regularly. I didn’t vote for Broad 🙄

You know the World Cup was this year though right? And they got to the final? And she saved a penalty in the very tensest of circumstances? You know that yet you still reckon she’s not done much this year.! Do you think the stance the England team has taken against misogyny in football is just “a spat”? Ok. Right.

This sort of comment is why it's important that she won.

Standing up against the misogyny of Nike is not a 'spat' 🙄

Standing up for women isn't a spat. And I think you might want to research what the women's football team did in 2023, not 2022.

grayhairdontcare · 20/12/2023 11:32

@Thatfeatherthere they nearly ( but didn't) win the World Cup

derxa · 20/12/2023 11:33

KJT or Ronnie O’Sullivan should have won.

alwayslearning789 · 20/12/2023 11:49

Big Fan of Mary, Great Lady, Fantastic Achievements, Support her 100%.

The dress though...was not her finest moment

Not sure what she was trying to achieve or say wearing the semi lingerie outfit.

She herself said she was uncomfortable.

I do wonder what she thinks now, looking back at those pictures lifting the Award in a lace bodice with her knickers sticking out...

StarlightLady · 20/12/2023 11:52

derxa · 20/12/2023 11:33

KJT or Ronnie O’Sullivan should have won.

On the grounds that they got fewer votes?

It’s pretty much like the game of football itself, the team that wins is the one that scores the most goals.

Let’s not get caught up in technicalities here. 😂. Ronnie wasn’t even on the voting list.

StarlightLady · 20/12/2023 12:04

You can see the seams in the fabric, which matched her flesh, she was not as naked as some suggest.

Plus it was not a dress competition!

Movinghouseatlast · 20/12/2023 12:06

I'm a feminist through and through and I thought the dress was ill thought out.

The trouble with 'if you've got it flaunt it' is that it often plays to the male gaze. To me that dress summed up porn in the mainstream- it was lingerie dressed up as a dress. She looked like she was about to have sex, which is what men like to see.

There is no male equivalent because generally women don't objectify men and dress them up to be a visual stimulant.

I guess tge equivalent might be if Gary Lineker had showed up in tight leather bondage gear and a gimp mask or maybe a sailor suit.

I'm all for women wearing what they want but I think often women have internalised what men want to see/ what men consider sexy and attractive.

NashvilleQueen · 20/12/2023 12:07

I am reminded of this account of Sarah Millican who, having felt wonderful getting dressed up for an awards ceremony, cried in the car on the way home because people were horrible about her dress. Mary Earps doesn't need her achievement overshadowed because some people didn't like the outfit she wore.

Agree! Total contradiction.
