Is it even a dress?

OP posts:

If you've got it, flaunt it.

She has, and she did.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿💖👍

Well, maybe that is why people are centering on her attire. There is a time, and a place to "flaunt" what you have. This was not it. It was a poor choice.

CharlotteRumpling · 20/12/2023 08:56

Gabby Logan must be some 30 years old than Mary? Why would Mary dress like her?

crumblingschools · 20/12/2023 09:00

For those saying we are only commenting on her clothes because she is a woman, if one of the men had turned up in the equivalent of a mankini and low slung trousers are you saying no-one would have commented?

And Gary Lineker wearing his pants on MOTD made the news, so obviously people were commenting on that. But he wore them as a result of a bet. He doesn’t do that on a regular basis or at awards events

The difference is people are using her outfit choice to undermine her achievement. Like the two are inextricably linked.

As a society we don't apply those same rules to men.

Amana · 20/12/2023 09:13

I’m sure these ‘ME dress’ threads are just click bait for MN.

I posted on another thread….

Young, fit, great body.

High fashion.

The cameras angle/screen cut the dress off and didn’t help the illusion that the dress had slipped revealing her underwear.

Perhaps her choices are to show that female footballers can choose to be feminine too. Address stereotypes.

Strong, super fit, resilient, successful women. The dress is not important.

BIossomtoes · 20/12/2023 09:16

They’re not. The two are completely distinct. Huge achievement, appalling dress. And I don’t imagine it’s even her fault. Some fuckwit of a stylist probably decided it was a good idea.

I disagree. There's another thread on this where it's been stated she's a worthy winner but....... then proceeded to use the words unattractive, inappropriate etc.
I've seen comments which claim this outfit choice makes her a poor role model to young girls.
Despite her amazing achievements she has men commenting online that she only won so the bbc can tick their diversity box and women slagging off her outfit.

It's both sexist and misogynistic.

shearwater2 · 20/12/2023 09:29

I'm just glad she is getting up all the right people's noses. All power to her elbow.

Of course they would have commented. It doesn't make it right that men feel they can't dress in anything other than a suit for these sorts of events. Men desperately need to liberate themselves and dress more flamboyantly if they want to. Look at all the hoo ha about Layton Williams wearing a dress on Strictly, and all those years ago David Beckham wearing a sarong.

Men are NOT the default for women to aspire to. Quite the fucking reverse I'd say.

crumblingschools · 20/12/2023 09:36

But is she wearing this outfit because she wants to or because she thinks she should be wearing something like this. She commented (more than once I think) on how she was worried about getting on stage. Why wear something you aren't confident in?

shearwater2 · 20/12/2023 09:37

It would be nice for a start if ANY male footballers could be openly gay and this would just be normal, and not make them the subject of homophobic abuse.

It would be good if the men's sport could follow the example of women on this.

She seemed pretty confident in it to me. Good for her.

Men don’t have to degrade or objectify themselves to prove their value in society.

It really depends what “brand” of feminism you buy into:

  • women can wear what they like, that’s empowerment and liberation
  • women dressing for the male gaze buys into the patriarchal system and harms us all

For those who would say “well she looks awful because she doesn’t look attractive”…well that’s not any brand of feminism.

BitOutOfPractice · 20/12/2023 09:40

There's no "should" about it. It's a popularity contest. Always has been since the days when you had to fill out a coupon in the Radio Times and send it in!

I don't see it as degrading and objectifying to show your body- it's in the eye of the beholder.

What we need is to stop having double standards or for the default to be a dull middle aged middle class white male and for men to be less restrictive and stop having fear of the gay. That would liberate everyone, women and men.

DarkDuvet · 20/12/2023 09:58

Are we allowed to comment on any frocks?

BeadedBubbles · 20/12/2023 10:05

NashvilleQueen · 20/12/2023 08:51

Stuart Broad should only have won if more people voted for him than they did for any of the others. That's how it works.

You're right - I was forgetting it was a personality/popularity contest and not an achievement contest.

piscofrisco · 20/12/2023 10:13

There is a fella that plays for Blackpool who is openly gay and apparently he hasn't been unhappy with the response since he came out-it's been overwhelmingly positive he said in one of his interviews. I'm surprised more haven't followed suit.
I actually didn't mind Mary's Dress. I've seen far worse.
And as it style and beauty I think it's fair to comment on it. Everything doesn't HAVE to be heavy weight discussion in social issues. We are still allowed opinions on clothes surely?

StarlightLady · 20/12/2023 10:14

shearwater2 · 20/12/2023 09:38

Exactly! And why should arguably, the best woman goalkeeper in the world not be confident.

Opinions on the dress may be mixed. At the most a criticism should be along the lines of “l didn’t like it”. Statements like awful etc is not fact, it’s opinionated.

And in the words of Alicia Keys “This girl is on fire”. 💕

NashvilleQueen · 20/12/2023 10:17

Yes. And SB did really well because he came second so is obviously very popular.

If a high profile awards ceremony isn’t the place to flaunt your body (if you are so inclined) where is? Don’t watch the Oscars or Grammys, you’ll have a conniption…

medianewbie · 20/12/2023 10:21

HeddaGarbled · 19/12/2023 23:27

Instead of having conniptions about MN daring to criticise the dress, maybe question why none of the male participants in the event feel the need to wear what is effectively underwear on the red carpet

Quite.

Agreed

BeadedBubbles · 20/12/2023 10:05

The clue is in the name - sports PERSONALITY of the year.

It is about who has been prominent and high profile, capturing the sporting zeitgeist, so likely to be more popular.

Mary Earps deserves it for her constant promotion and championing of women and girls in sport.

Male cricketers have won it before and certainly will again.

Male winners vastly outnumber female winners.

MargaritaThyme · 20/12/2023 10:31

grayhairdontcare · 20/12/2023 07:59

The dress looked cheap and I'm sorry but Stuart Broad should have won sporty.

I agree. No disrespect to any of the other excellent candidates, but I voted for Stuart .

The problem with SPOTY, of course, is that anyone can vote. If only knowledgeable sports fans were voting, the results might be different.

shearwater2 · 20/12/2023 10:32

medianewbie · 20/12/2023 10:21

Agreed

Because they are boring and also feel constricted by the dull heteronormative fear of the gay patriarchy which tells men off for things like wearing brown shoes with a grey suit, never mind wearing anything resembling something seen as feminine.

Let's not be them. I'm certainly not. I love having the choice to wear anything from a dinner jacket to a skimpy dress as formal wear.
