I can't do this alone folks. I've got TOO MUCH STUFF... I also have 2 beauty advent calendars

So I've set myself a challenge. Between now and June the 1st 2024 I will not buy any beauty products UNLESS I've run out of all of that particular type. If I've got a tiny sample bottle of shampoo or conditioner I'll use it all up. All those half used bottles of moisturiser, night cream, shower gel and toner and body lotion MUST GO... the mountain of soap must be surmounted.

My only concession is that I will not cancel the Liberty Beauty drop will get a couple of boxes to cheer me up

So if you want to join me make up your own rules and lets cull that stash

Hello. Can I join in?
I’m not a beauty hoarder as such but I am terrible for buying on a multi buy or a deal. Guilty of buying Molton Brown or Liz Earle TSVs on QVC because it’s good value but it isn’t if I only want half the things in the bundle. I did sell lots of bits from my Clarins Advent calendar which was nice especially because I won it in a raffle.
So on Black Friday I stocked up on toothpaste from Superdrug using a combo of deals and have a years worth. I bought 6-12 months worth of shampoo, conditioner and shower gel from Aveda and Molton Brown. These were bargains and I am nicely stocked for these.

Cosmetics is my main issue. I haven’t bought anything this year but I’m going to run down my stock half used products. It will be painful.

Fraaahnces · 07/02/2024 04:40

Welcome @Clothesdonkey! Do you count toothpaste as a beauty product? I think it’s a necessary item. Having a year’s supply isn’t bad either!

Umm, It’s essential not a beauty product per se. But if I have a years supply then I won’t use the excuse of needing toothpaste to pop into Boots or Superdrug and buying lots of cosmetics.

Welcome Clothesdonkey,

(even though its not my thread I think a lot of us are alike here) 😀

I too have my BF stash of basics which will last me until next BF, things like detergent, washing up liquid, but also toothpaste and that sort of thing. To me it just makes sense to bulk buy these types of things that we know will get used up in a year, and there is the cost saving side to it as well. (looking at the price of detergent now is quite scary, so I am very relieved I have my stash).

But some of us, (ie me) have not been able to stop there, and this stash has really spilled over into things, ie the fact that I have at least 15 face washes to get through and the soap, goodness the bars of soap ... just way too many.

I will still buy multi buys of certain things, but I have taken so much from this thread already, and have been able to resist the temptation for things that appear good value, that I really don't actually need.

I used to watch that US tv show about the Couponers, and think that if that was an option where I live, I so would have done it. In hindsight, I am quite relieved now that it is not an option as I would have rooms full of random stuff.

But I agree with you, for eg if you have the toothpaste which you will need, it stops the temptation of going into the shop and come out with loads of other things that you don't need.

I feel like this thread is a great support group 😊

I forgot I also ordered a small size hydrating spray toner yesterday. Only remembered when I opened the package this morning. I did need one as none in stash and want it for travelling next week.

I have also had a nice time shopping my stash to pack my skincare. I’m going for a month so wanted to be sensible about what I take. A general moisturiser for instance rather than a day cream and a night cream. Same with eye cream.

Welcome @Clothesdonkey. I think a stock of things like toothpaste etc I would class as household items. But I don’t tend to buy toothpaste in Boots or similar - it goes on the supermarket delivery list.

@isthismylifenow - yes it would be very easy to fall into a bad place with coupons etc. We watched a tv programme about Costco and they featured a woman who stocked up with bulk buys from there. We use Costco too but she was ridiculous. Multiple huge packs of toilet rolls etc. She had a room full of stuff but still bought more. She ended up paying to have shelving built to hold it all!

OchonAgusOchonOh · 07/02/2024 10:41

@Peridot1 Are you going anywhere exciting? Hopefully somewhere nice and warm.

QueefofSheena · 07/02/2024 12:20

I don’t count things like SPF and shower gel etc as it gets used by everyone. I’ve been fairly good apart from buying some foot stuff on £10 Tuesday for my hooves, and the CB perfume edit. Perfume is my big weakness at the moment, I’m a sucker for a box or edit with perfume and candles. I use it everyday so it does get used up quite quickly.

I managed to pass along some cleansers and toners that are too harsh for me now, so the skincare stash doesn’t look quite as bad. The make up one is still ridiculous but I’m training myself to not open new things if I have similar on the go, and throw away things like old palettes that have been hanging around too long.

Peridot1 · 07/02/2024 12:32

@OchonAgusOchonOh - I’m going to Australia. So yes definitely some sun and heat! Can’t wait.

Contemplating buying the CB perfum edit for my friend.

Fabulous. Have an amazing time.

Clothesdonkey · 07/02/2024 16:43

I fear I have overblown my dependence on toothpaste when I was really thinking about what’s in my cupboards.

Peridot1 · 08/02/2024 09:37

@Clothesdonkey - I think we all do that at times! And actually your post about stocking up on things like toothpaste etc with Black Friday deals etc. made me think I really should be more sensible about stuff like that. After all if I save money on things like that I have more to spend on other beauty products! Once I have used up my stash obviously!

FayCarew · 08/02/2024 12:01

I succumbed yesterday. Bought conditioner I don't need because it was only 30p instead of £1. I had found 40p on the pavement earlier, so won't berate myself too much.

I went into another shop and was sorely tempted to buy moisturiser and a lip balm but put them back.

Fraaahnces · 08/02/2024 13:16

I bought a new hairbrush because my dog chewed the handle off mine. Twerp hasn’t chewed anything for years but was punishing me for not being at home for nearly a week.

Fraaahnces · 08/02/2024 13:18

*Bloody new phone! I also spent $3.00 on a scalp treatment applicator. Will see if it works to apply treatment just where I need it instead of all through my hair.

Peridot1 · 08/02/2024 13:28

I think we all agreed replacements are not counted @Fraaahnces. Especially for dog chewed hairbrushes! That doesn’t add to the stash.

I bought some travel size toiletries for my trip on Monday. Mouthwash and deodorant for the flight and purple shampoo and a Simple face wash so I don’t have to take full sizes of those. And my full size new purple shampoo arrived to replace my one that is probably at least 6/7 years old and my hairdresser said I should get rid of.

I think that’s me done again now for a while.

I’m heading your way @Fraaahnces but just to Sydney and Melbourne. Can’t wait!

Fraaahnces · 09/02/2024 06:03

Pity you’re not coming to Brisbane @Peridot1!!! I would have absolutely arranged to meet you!

Peridot1 · 09/02/2024 08:39

@Fraaahnces - I know! I thought I might to see my cousin but he’s coming down to Sydney. Would have loved to meet up.

Thereislightattheendofthetunnel · 09/02/2024 09:55

@FayCarew your post made laugh 😆. I also found 20p on the pavement but it won’t be enough to buy anything.

I am so tempted by the fragrance edit from CB. For those who have it already is it any good? I don’t know any of the fragrances there so I wondered before spending 40£

FayCarew · 09/02/2024 10:09

@Thereislightattheendofthetunnel , the best one I had was when I had a free voucher from a newspaper for a sample of something. I walked to the shop to get it, which took about 40 minutes, which made me feel a bit of a mug.
On the pavement outside the shop I found £20, and the sample was a decent size and very nice.

Thereislightattheendofthetunnel · 09/02/2024 12:04

@FayCarew that’s very lucky 🤩.

FayCarew · 09/02/2024 12:10

@Thereislightattheendofthetunnel , it was most fortunate. I went from 'Why am I doing this?' to feeling very happy.

One thing with the buying stuff is that it's the buying it that makes me happy. Not much of the actual stuff is a joy to use. It feels like quite a chore at times.
Some of it exceeds my expectations though.

The best things for exceeding my expectations tend to be from Holland & Barrett. Things that end up to be a chore are usually hand creams, hair conditioner/masks, face masks, exfoliators, body sprays. I never buy scent because they tend to make me feel sick after a couple of hours.

listsandbudgets · 09/02/2024 16:24

@Clothesdonkey You're very welcome to our little group of stashers and hoarders. I desperately try to avoid buying in bulk as it's bad enough as it is but DP always does. He orders his toothpaste a dozen at a time from Amazon buys huge multipacks of soap and finally admitted to being the one who ordered 10 bottles of listerine and stashed it under the stairs. On the other hand he does actualy work his way through it and only order more when he's down to the last one - which is better than me.

As for coupons the only ones I really use are when I shop in Boots and they offer them for No. 7 it's always such a good deal I do find myself buying a bit extra so I qualify.

@Peridot1 Have a fabulous time in Aus I wish I was going with you - got any space in your suitcase - I reckon I might be able to squash in between your various beauty products if I hold my breath.

@Fraaahnces My beloved spaniel is especially fond of dish brushes but I reckon if she happened upon a hairbrush she'd enjoy that too. She recently got hold of one of my toothbrushes gave it a good chew and buried it in the garden.

As for me I think I'm slowly starting to see a difference in my stash. More things are getting closer to actually being used up and I'm actually starting to see some gaps on the shelf. I've still not bought any beauty - and my new bag arrived from Liberty today - I spent nearly every penny of beauty drop money on it so I wouldn't be tempted. Now anything I put in can go towards the advent calendar later this year

@FayCarew I love buying things too. It's definitely addictive - dosent't matter if it's a multi pack of knickers or an expensive coat just a good feeling

I thought about it, but the sizes are so small, most are sample size for £40.
