I can't do this alone folks. I've got TOO MUCH STUFF... I also have 2 beauty advent calendars

So I've set myself a challenge. Between now and June the 1st 2024 I will not buy any beauty products UNLESS I've run out of all of that particular type. If I've got a tiny sample bottle of shampoo or conditioner I'll use it all up. All those half used bottles of moisturiser, night cream, shower gel and toner and body lotion MUST GO... the mountain of soap must be surmounted.

My only concession is that I will not cancel the Liberty Beauty drop will get a couple of boxes to cheer me up

So if you want to join me make up your own rules and lets cull that stash

This thread is stopping me from buying the Elemis offer on QVC. I have loads of cleansing balms, same with eye creams, toners and body lotion. I dislike shower gel. I do not need it regardless of what good value it is.

I have two advents. That is all I will buy unless I run out of a category (unlikely).

MavisMcMinty · 06/11/2023 16:40

I had already planned to un-auto-renew my Look Fantastic and Glossybox monthly box subscriptions, but really like/enjoy my Liberty Beauty Drop and Latest in Beauty subs, so will continue with those. It’s a start though!

MavisMcMinty · 06/11/2023 16:43

Totally agree with @OchonAgusOchonOh on the QVC Elemis TSV! For me it’d be spending £68 for a 30ml pot of marine cream. Although at least there’s no P&P to pay, which would usually add £5 or £6 to a heavy bundle like that.

Cyclingmummy1 · 06/11/2023 17:10

I have Liberty and Haeckels so I'll keep those running and won't buy anything new until I'm completely out of that type of product. I've done fairly well this year and finished lots of things but have bought a Boots advent calendar so that's two dozen items to add to stock.

wheresmyshoe · 06/11/2023 17:18

I'm with you. I have one advent, Liberty beauty drop and I'm enjoying using up some really lovely products I'd forgotten about.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/11/2023 17:20

I'm in. I've just taken delivery of the M&S advent calendar (don't normally buy a calendar, but the Benefit full size mascara sold it to me) and I've also got a drawer full of minis and samples. They do come in handy on holidays, but I really don't need to buy any full size products unless shampoo etc actually run out.

listsandbudgets · 06/11/2023 17:26

Welcome everyone.

QVC is the devil... we do not need the Elemis and we DEFINATELY do not need a big bundle of the stuff... really we don't.

I'm about to unsubscribe from a whole load of mailing lists - all these offers that drop into my mail box and tempt me... I'm looking at you L'occtaine

I also need to work out what I've actually got because I've no real idea.

@Cyclingmummy1 I was very tempted by the Boots one but I already had the Liberty and knew I'd buy the M&S and couldn't quite justify a third - financially or otherwise!

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie I'm really looking forward to the M&S although I'm not a great fan of makeup so my daughter will be getting the mascara in her stocking

I'm in. I like this commitment to use everything of one type up before you're allowed to buy more - that sounds like something I could stick to. I have ridiculous amounts of mascara, eyeshadow etc that I really need to use up and I'm not devoted to one brand of those the way I am with foundation, concealer and powder.

I've got the F&M calendar so at least I won't be replenishing my makeup stocks. Trying to resist the temptation to buy Harrods or Sephora but I really don't need them!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/11/2023 18:57

@listsandbudgets It took some willpower tonight to put it away until December! It does like I'll use lots of it and anything I don't want will go dd.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 06/11/2023 18:58

I have the Boots premium calendar and the Harrods Fragrance one and that's it this year,

Bought some travel size hair products from SpaceNK as they had the hair GWP if you spent £45. So that's a lot of little bits for the girls Xmas boxes. Plus I've got lots of minis to spread around.

I've got the little urban decay sin palette on my Xmas list but that's it for this year.

CornishTiger · 06/11/2023 19:01

I’ve been on a buying ban for ages. It’s sooooooo boring but necessary. I literally need nothing. I don’t even have any advents to look forward too!

Youaresowelcome · 06/11/2023 19:28

I decided to do this… Dh bought me a liberty and look fantastic advent calendar as Christmas presents last year, the year before he got me a John Lewis and a LF one. Coupled with various subscriptions, my stash was huge! So at the start of this year I thought I’d stop buying stuff, cancel subscriptions and work my way through my it, however…. You’d be surprised how long it takes to get through even small bottles of moisturiser etc. but the stuff you use frequently such as shampoo, mascara, foundation runs out quite quickly. So you have to restock these. So now, come November, I still have a huge stash. I’m not sure if it’s because I won’t start a new skincare bottle until I’ve used one up, even if I don’t particularly like it. Feels wasteful! Maybe I should chill out a bit and ditch ones I don’t actually like.
Im also going to fill a couple of love in a box donations for Christmas.

Pigtailsandall · 06/11/2023 19:40

I need to do this. I have so many things, particularly soaps, cleansers and serums. And lots of small samples high I'm saving for.... something.

What is QVC?

LittleMooli · 06/11/2023 20:12

I'm going to join! For me no more purchases until March unless I have run out completely eg. Shampoo - I don't need 3 just one and when that is nearly done I can buy one more

I sold my samples as a bundle for make your own advent calendar

Puravida23 · 06/11/2023 20:39

I’m in but starting in January as I can’t promise I won’t buy a reduced advent calendar or any Black Friday deals if there are decent ones.
I agree some of the products take forever to use up I also will carry on until the bitter end with a product even if it is not that good.
I have an eye cream I have been using all year and it still hasn’t run out . I have another 3 in my stash which I can’t wait to start but this one just keeps going. If the others take as long to use up I will be good until 2026!
My downfall also is moisturisers I can’t resist them I have at least 8 to use up . I think I may have to repurpose some as body lotions.

What is QVC?

QVC was one of the first shopping channels on satellite TV, think they celebrate 30 years this year, so well-established. Most of their stuff is overpriced and the P&P really takes the piss, but for beauty bundles from brands like Elemis they’re unbeatable.

They have a new Today’s Special Value every 24 hours from across their range of products, which is what this week’s Elemis deal is (they usually offer it for a week, Elemis is one of their star brands, they’ve sold it for decades, and their TSVs - 4 times a year usually - sell in their tens of thousands.)

Think QVC stands for Quality, Value and dunno about the C - Channel, maybe?

Peridot1 · 06/11/2023 21:17

I so need this thread. Have so much stuff. Every year I promise I’ll be do a no buy and every year I fail.

I’m in New York at the moment and went to Sephora yesterday and bought stuff. And I definitely don’t need it!

I haven’t succumbed to an advent calendar. Yet. Nothing really tempts me. But I know I’ll miss opening something every morning.

TheChosenTwo · 06/11/2023 21:26

I did this a couple of years ago having accumulated so much. This year is the first in a few that I’ve bought myself an advent calendar and I’m excited about it - because it has loads in it that I’ve not tried as it’s been released in the last 2 years that I’ve been using everything up OR it’s something I would be repurchasing anyway.
It felt really good to downsize everything, I don’t need drawers full of makeup and skincare, I only have one face, I’m not a beauty blogger or YouTuber making any money out of buying any of the stuff that’s promoted everywhere. I don’t need a ‘collection’, just enough that I will use up before it goes bad.

JMAngel1 · 06/11/2023 21:40

You see I can’t do this “use up everything in a category” first. What if you have a HG eye cream for example - I’m going to have to have THAT eye cream and to hell with whatever else is in my stash!😂
For some categories it’s doable. e.g body wash but for others such as hardcore skincare, no, I can’t do it. So the other products just sit there looking pretty. This is why I don’t get advent calendars etc. I’d rather go on YesStyle and get the amazing products that I know work for me - (Timeless Matrixyl 6 Synthe will have to be prised out of my dead hands!)

ilovetomatoes · 06/11/2023 21:44

I’m in. Bathroom overflowing. Several wash bags stuffed full of stuff. Need to use it all!

JMAngel1 · 06/11/2023 21:48

I’ve streamlined it all now - I only have my HG items and give away anything I don’t want/need - my next door neighbour has done very well out of me!
I don’t do TSVs/advent calendars anymore. I just go for the best stuff that I know I get results from.

TheChosenTwo · 06/11/2023 21:55

@JMAngel1 it was only through forcing myself to work through everything I had that I found what I loved most - I gave so much away that, after trying it, I realised didn’t do anything for me. The dds and a few of my friends ended up with a lot of new things to try.
It also really made me think about what I would actually buy again, what types of product I like and don’t like and generally makes me a much more conscientious shopper. The hundreds (thousands?!) of pounds worth of ‘stuff’ I gave away was a really short sharp shock and I vowed never to get sucked into it all again.
