Are floral midi dresses OVER?

Just bought this dress in the Hush sale. Good price, perfect length, fits great.....I just have this feeling that maybe floral midi dresses are over, and I won't wear it. Thoughts??

Do you like it? Like YOU in it? Sod fashion if you do!

minipie · 03/08/2023 23:25

I don’t know but selfishly I hope so as they look godawful on me, and it’s been so hard to find any other style. (I quite like that one but would look like an oversized sack on me.)

CointreauVersial · 03/08/2023 23:42

This particular dress fitted really nicely, the style was spot on, and I felt good in it, but I just worry the the trend has passed. That feeling when you realise that fashion has moved on, but you haven't.....

Sod the trends. Wear what makes you feel good!

Growlybear83 · 03/08/2023 23:44

Why on earth would it matter if it's not the height of fashion more? If you like the dress, wear it!

TenOhSeven · 03/08/2023 23:47

Wear the dress if you like it and don't be such a sheep!

pictoosh · 03/08/2023 23:49

Agree with others, think beyond current fads and what flatters and feels right on YOU. I'll be glad the floral midi trend is over because the bloody things have been taking up rail space for far too long. They aren't right for me and they remind me of Kate Middleton too. Conservative.
I don't care about what's in...I care about what's on. As in, on ME.
Wear what you like!

TheCornflakeHotline · 03/08/2023 23:49

John Lewis tried to cancel the floral frock this summer and failed.

John Lewis tried to cancel the floral frock this summer and failed.

They didn’t though, did they. They tried to offer alternatives, more choice.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/08/2023 23:58

It a nice dress. I agree with pp, sod fashion!

Frances0911 · 04/08/2023 00:00

If you're only 5 foot one like I am then they were never in!

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 04/08/2023 00:30

It’s a lovely dress OP. On me anything like that makes me look like a floral dalek but this kind of look seems to suit everyone else I know! 🙁

justasking111 · 04/08/2023 00:35

IMO it's more of an autumnal dress. You can wear with boots, throw on a cardigan, gilet in the colder months

Well, that's what I'm thinking. Versatile.

And I agree with you all - that I can wear what I jolly well want. But we all want to look vaguely fashionable, don't we?

Maybe I will keep it. I've put on a few pounds recently, and it will be nice to have something in the wardrobe that makes me feel good.

If they're out what I'm supposed to do? Wait, let me guess, donate the lot, go to a nice department store and replace everything with the stuff they sell in order to help people like me? And then the smart ones will get bargains from charity shops and I'll spend a bundle. And next year it'll all be out again, so off I go to get rid of it all and start from scratch? Hmmmm. I'll hold on to all my dresses as long as I like them, thank you very much.

etinaz · 04/08/2023 01:05

Don't be a silly sausage 😊 Buy and wear the dress and ignore the fashion randoms working to generate profits.

PuffyShirt · 04/08/2023 02:33

The midi length does not really suit me as I’m relatively tall as it looks quite frumpy as it falls mud-calf.

Having said that, I have dozens of Hush dresses. I’m on hols at the moment and have proudly packed really light. I’ve got 7 hush dresses with me.

mangopassionfruitlatte · 04/08/2023 03:01

I too was thinking autumn dress because of the black background. I'd say it's not my ideal of floral but more ditzy pattern.
When I think of floral I think of bigger flowers.
Some people never liked floral dresses, been a lurker on MN for years and even 10+ ago there were posters dissing floral dresses. I think some comments just stick in our heads more, it's not necessarily a common opinion just one that our brain honed in on because it touched us somehow. I'd wear it in autumn.
There is a vein of fashion that's more concerned about the environment and so wearing things even out of fashion can be a statement of itself that you care more about not wasting clothes, confident enough to wear what you like. They say the best dressed people don't follow fashion, anyway.

greenteaandmarshmallows · 04/08/2023 06:23

They might not be fashionable but they'll be a staple. Like jogging bottoms

ProfessorInkling · 04/08/2023 07:20

I have that dress. I’m not giving up my floral midis whatever John Lewis might like me to do 😁

MrsLeonFarrell · 04/08/2023 07:29

Lovely dress, I have one that is very similar otherwise I'd be tempted!

Caitlin Moran wrote a column a few months ago about how toddlers and old ladies had the best dress sense because they were all about comfort not fashion, so basically dresses and leggings. I loved it but mainly because that's me, dresses and leggings. Being fashion challenged though I never realised until I started reading this board that if I'd only bought white trainers I'd have been fashionable and now it's too late!!

User1800 · 04/08/2023 07:37

Love that dress! pockets too!

just wondering what age you are, as I’m early 60s and by now I know what suits me best and buy it, fashion doesn’t really enter my mind

Yalta · 04/08/2023 07:40

Frances0911

I gave up buying anything years ago.

A couple of weeks ago, for the 1st time in years I actually needed an outfit to wear that wasn’t bought at Screwfix.

I was excited to go shopping. After several hours of looking I have realised why I don’t go clothes shopping any more.

Apart from the fact that nothing fitted. It was the length of the things that I couldn’t understand.
I know I am short but it was the amount of material that trailed on the floor. Even taking account of the fact I have short legs it was the top of the dress that was too long.
I looked at trousers and although I am over weight I was faced with the choice of a crotch that was somewhere around my knees but the leg length was ok (have you tried walking with a low hanging trouser crotch) or the crotch was in the right place but the leg length trailed at least 18” past my toes.

in the end I went to the men’s department and bought a pair of trousers that was my exact inside leg and waste measurement

KPops22 · 04/08/2023 07:40

That dress has miles of wear in it with the Winter looming. I like to look somewhat current but am lazy at the same time so this ticks a box for me. Dresses like this are not going to go away anytime soon!

Plump82 · 04/08/2023 07:40

People have been asking this on here for the last 2 years and some people have said they are, yet we still are able to buy floral midi dresses!
Who cares whether someone on here says they are, or aren't. If you like it and feel good in it then that's all that matters!
