Are floral midi dresses OVER?

Just bought this dress in the Hush sale. Good price, perfect length, fits great.....I just have this feeling that maybe floral midi dresses are over, and I won't wear it. Thoughts??

This is what I believe is fashionable now.

Personally I am not wearing it, but I can recognise that it is on trend.

The op is a long standing poster.

I think this is a fashion journalist desperate to get others to do their work for them. The user name suggests that. We will all be stars in the next issue of Vogue, presumably.

Yes I imagine vogue desperately looks to the style boards of mumsnet for fashion insight all the time

I know the convo has moved on but I don't understand why people seem to think it's this binary choice between totally ignoring trends or constantly replacing perfectly good clothes.

I buy mostly from places like eBay or DePop but I do think carefully about whether something is going to have longevity because if I feel "dated" in something I know I will end up not wearing it. If something feels very "fashioney" then it probably will date faster lME so I tend to avoid "fads". I also rotate clothes; I'll store things in boxes and maybe bring something out again at a later date if I think of a way to style it that feels current.

As a previous poster, most of us do follow trends to a greater or lesser extent. All these women in my office didn't suddenly start wearing floral midi-dresses and white trainers out of nowhere! They clearly got the idea from somewhere!

So they're wearing a different look compared to what they were wearing say 5 years ago when it was a regular look for me. But I'm apparently shallow and a "sheep" just because I'm at a different stage in the trend cycle?!

LuckySantangelo35 · 05/08/2023 10:39

Obviously lots of you are not bothered about being in fashion. OP is though and that’s the question she asked in her original post - so to answer OP, they are not in fashion anymore no.

Mutinyonthecrunchie · 05/08/2023 11:16

What is fashion anyway? Imo it's just a lot of sheep following the same look - so boring.
Wear what suits you, I gave up caring what others thought about me when I was about 25, and it's served me well for the last 30 odd years as a result.

Floisme · 05/08/2023 11:22

Is there a word for spending your time posting on threads about topics you're not interested in? I'm sure there must be but maybe I'm too vapid and vacuous to think of it.

Is there a word for constantly berating people for having an opinion that’s different from yours, and trying to police S&B?

JustaChristian · 05/08/2023 11:47

I used to work in clothes retail. The customers who came to shop were never dressed in anything I would call current fashion. Most people do not know what the current fashion is and sometimes they know better for themselves which timeless classics , cuts and colours suit their skin colour, body type and age

narniabusiness · 05/08/2023 11:47

I don’t know what the word is @Floisme but it’s probably a rude one.

Floisme · 05/08/2023 11:59

I would argue that the posters doing the policing are the ones who turn up on these kinds of threads - not just this one, it happens regularly - to tell people off for trying to have a discussion about fashion.

I'm genuinely curious. What's the motivation behind not only opening a thread on something you've no interest in, but taking all that trouble to announce you're not interested?

We've asked the question many times on this board, explained that it feels like the equivalent of bursting into a motoring or football thread to proclaim your lack of interest in cars. or sport. Never once seen anyone attempt an answer.

I don't consider it substantially different from any other kind of trolling, but admittedly haven't devoted much thought to the phenomenon - my poor frilly brain has been overtaxed with hemline pondering.

It’s lovely. And honestly if that trend is over someone should tell all the shops as they are everywhere.

bonzaitree · 05/08/2023 12:21

Thé trend is over. The question is do you care?

Ladyoftheknight · 05/08/2023 12:26

I think sack-like dresses are over, unless you're 20, size 0 and androgynous which seems to be a popular style atm. Well tailored clothes including dresses are in at last!

LemonadeSunshine · 05/08/2023 12:30

It depends on how much heed you pay to other people's opinions.
If it's a perfectly normal piece of clothing, i.e., not revealing or offensive, then surely it's whether or not you like it??

I don't know @Floisme but it's one of the reasons I don't really post on this board much 🙁 Imagine somebody on the Style and Beauty board having an interest in fashion! 🙃

Highdaysandholidays1 · 05/08/2023 12:44

The OP posted here for opinions. On whether something is 'over'. She wanted an opinion on that.

I'm so tired of Style and Beauty, we can't actually discuss clothes at all because a) it's bad to buy clothes (even though this is a major industry and employer) b) we are throwing away clothes (even though most of the savvy fashionistas on here use Vinted, Depop, Ebay and source bargains/pass on to charity) and c) we should not care what is on our bodies (so be different to everyone else in history). Ok, I'm out (for a bit!)

BigButtons · 05/08/2023 12:49

I say wear what you want, what you like and feel comfortable in.
years ago I bought a couple of pairs of Levi’s 501 CT. Bloody loved them. Then baggy hHe and went completely ‘out of fashion’ it was also skinny shit. I wore skinny shit, but didn’t stop wearing the Levi’s. Now I have three pairs of urban outfitters y2k Bdg cargo jeans. Some of the most comfortable trousers I have ever worn and I wear nothing else. They also suit me. Soon they will go out of fashion, infact they probably already have. I will still wear them.

Chewbecca · 05/08/2023 12:50

I quite agree. Getting a thread into Trending actually = getting a thread to derail.

KeepScrapingBy · 05/08/2023 13:54

Personally I love them but I don’t know if they are fashionable or not. You do see a lot of people wearing them so I think if you like it, and think it suits you, go ahead!

guvguv · 05/08/2023 14:17

Do people actually not wear something they really like, simply because it's no longer on-trend? 😮 I thought that was just something we did as teens.

CointreauVersial · 05/08/2023 16:18

To clear up a few things:

No, I'm not a fashion journalist....no, definitely not. Should I be flattered? 😆 I joined MN many years ago for idle chit-chat about stuff like low carbing, couch to 5k, perfume addiction, parenting (occasionally...), and yes, fashion.

No, I'm not planning to "throw away" any clothes. I buy mostly from charity shops, topping up with retail purchases of current fashion (charity shops great for classics, but less good for trend). Anything I don't wear anymore goes back to the charity shop, or is sold on eBay. Or stacked up in the loft....let's not mention that...

But I do like to make my retail purchases "considered", hence my question: is this a trend that has a future, or is it coming to an end? Is this particular dress, lovely though it is, worthy of investment, or will I not get the use out of it because I feel the trend is a bit stale?

I also echo what others have said - if you are not interested in S&B then there might be better boards for you.

CointreauVersial · 05/08/2023 16:32

Also...@guvguv - guess what? I'm <gasp> 56 years old, and still like to dress fashionably. It's not a thing reserved for teenagers, you know.
