Are floral midi dresses OVER?

Just bought this dress in the Hush sale. Good price, perfect length, fits great.....I just have this feeling that maybe floral midi dresses are over, and I won't wear it. Thoughts??

Only if you insist on fitting and conforming with prescribed trends.
Love that dress.

LindorDoubleChoc · 04/08/2023 14:11

I really hope so. I just really can't be doing with floral anything.

justtype · 04/08/2023 14:46

I love it!

Fashion is about conning gullible people out of money and so they feel they belong to a particular tribe.

The great thing about getting older is not giving a fuck about the unwanted opinions of others.

Does 'unwanted' include giving the op your opinion of the fashion industry and the people who enjoy it, when what she actually asked for was thoughts on a new dress?

OP said she wouldn’t be able to wear it, if it was out of fashion.
How silly is that?

I’ll admit to being stupid in my youth and wasting too much money on expensive clothes, shoes and bags because I wanted to get on in my career and all the senior exec women wore expensive stuff.

I just wish I could have seen into the future and realised what a mug I’d been and how much money I’d wasted, and especially worrying about the irrelevant opinions of others. 😂 You live and learn. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Possimpible · 04/08/2023 14:58

@PinkIcedCream No, OP said she knows she won't wear it in the future if the trend has passed. Not that she wouldn't be able to, that she won't want to. Presumably so she can return the dress if she decides she won't wear it, thus being sensible and saving money so your little sermon is unnecessary.

If you're not interesting in style and beauty, AIBU is that way --->

You're doing it again. The op asked for thoughts about the dress, not about the fashion industry or her state of mind. But thank you for your double master class in 'irrelevant opinions'.

Of your pro's:

  1. is it really difficult for you to find dresses of the 'perfect length'?
  2. is it really difficult for you to find dresses that 'fit great'?
  3. would you have bought it at full price?
If no for any of these, I'd return just because I always end up regretting those 'have doubts but it was on sale...' purchases. Save your money for stuff you love and KNOW you will wear.
Redcrayons · 04/08/2023 15:24

I hope so, I hate that length and want the shops to start stocking knee length again.

its nice though, so if you like it then wear it.

"But we all want to look vaguely fashionable, don't we"

Erm... no. I want to look and feel good for me. I actually can't believe there are people out there who won't wear an outfit they feel amazing in because it's not in fashion!? It's very sad.

The whole point is, if you're into fashion you won't feel amazing in a dated outfit any more, even if you used to love that outfit. If trends have drastically moved on you'll feel awkward and out of step.

It's ok to like fashion and want to look fashionable. I swear there's a whole demographic of people who've "let themselves go" (yeh yeh shoot me language police) and secretly although it kinda shows on these threads 😂 are annoyed that others aren't of the same mindset. Like they want it to become a trend in itself so they don't have to feel out of place wearing whatever they like and ignoring fashion

It's fine if you've no interest in fashion. Just please stop jumping on threads started by people who are to tell them to "wear whatever you like". It's not like any OP anywhere is ever looking for other's permission to do this

OP I'd buy it. I live a low key life. It's kinda over in general but if you buy a more classic style and it suits you so it looks like you're wearing the clothes, not the clothes wearing you (which only really works as a statement if the item is in fashion, IMO), then it's fine for a generic, casual, daily outfit. Not many of us dresses in the latest up to the minute fashions to pootle around at home, running errands and doing the school run. If it's for work, tidy and smart is fine. For a special occasion, even a casual one, you might be happier in something more current

BrookNoRivals · 04/08/2023 15:31

It’s a shame to think of the two options as being following fashion and “letting yourself go”. It’s perfectly possible to be into clothes and style without equating that with following trends- in fact, lots of the most stylish people don’t follow trends at all 🤷‍♀️

John Lewis tried to cancel the floral frock this summer and failed.

Exactly what I was about to say!

LadyBird1973 · 04/08/2023 15:39

I'd probably avoid trainers and denim jackets with floral dresses now - I think that look has become very uniform. But that dress would be nice with sandals (if we get a summer at this point) or boots. I really like the colours and the most important thing is how it looks on you.

Jamtartforme · 04/08/2023 15:44

🤭 I agree

I’m not that into current fashionable music, I’m pretty dated and stick with the 90s/00s bands I’ve listened to since I was about 16. I wouldn’t jump onto a thread about chart music to say ‘listen to whatever you want, dont be a sheeple and care about what’s cool and in fashion’. I just wouldn’t join in.

QueefQueen80s · 04/08/2023 15:45

@IndianSummer78 Definitely haven't let myself go, I have my own style and maintain myself. I'm just free to wear whatever the fuck I want. 🙌🏼🖤

justasking111 · 04/08/2023 15:47

Lace has been big this summer, broderie anglaise. It's very pretty

Floisme · 04/08/2023 15:48

I must admit op, I'm now feeling a bit suspicious as to why it's such a big reduction for a long sleeved dress that looks as if it would be very wearable well into autumn. I've mostly avoided the sales this time around so I don't know if it's typical or not but, knocking off over 50% at this stage of the summer feels like a lot to me. But it sounds like you've seen it for real and tried it on?

LadyBird1973 · 04/08/2023 16:02

£35 is a bargain for a dress that flatters, is comfortable and versatile. You could do a lot with it to keep it current. I liked the suggestion upthread of a sleeveless jumper and boots.
I never really liked the floral dress trend but those colours are lovely and strong and winter is coming.

Just because John Lewis says a trend is over, that doesn't make it so. All the women who bought those dresses will continue to wear them because in real life people don't just throw away clothes (not at Hush prices anyway)!

It's like the skinny jeans thing - new shapes do come along (or the old ones are resuscitated) and increase variation but skinnies we're still being worn long after the fashion experts told us they were done!

Maybe it would be 'risky' to buy lots of £100 floral dresses but £35 for something you know looks good on you is a bargain imo.

LittleMoReturns · 04/08/2023 16:26

I’ve barely seen a woman wearing a floral midi all summer. Last year that floral midi-and-white-trainers look was still wall-to-wall. It has absolutely died a death this year as far as I can see (London).

CointreauVersial · 04/08/2023 16:29

NoAprilFool · 04/08/2023 11:14

I opened this thread thinking “hope not, I’ve finally found one that looks ok on me” and lo and behold it’s that exact dress 😂😂which I’m wearing right now.
I love it, it suits me and I’ll be wearing it until it falls apart.

Ha! Great minds think alike. 😆It is indeed a great dress, and a bargain. I like the fact that the drawstring waist makes it less "buffet" and the colours/sleeves work for autumn. I've tried it on, and it really suits me.

Yes, I am interested in fashion. I read magazines, follow influencers......and as someone astutely pointed out, no matter how flattering or comfortable an outfit might be, I wouldn't feel good wearing something obviously dated/unfashionable. And I don't want to buy something if it is just tipping into dated because I won't get any longevity out of it. I bought a pair of skinny jeans juuuuust as the shapes were changing, and they were barely worn. I wouldn't say I'm on the cutting edge of fashion but I do get a good feel when tides are turning. I just feel that hemlines are going up again, and florals are less relevant. That's not to say the shops aren't still awash with floral midis, but hey, you can still buy skinny jeans, and I haven't worn them for years.

It's worth pointing out that the vast majority of my wardrobe is second hand, usually from charity shops - I'm not filling my wardrobe with disposable one-hit-wonders if I can help it. Hence my question.....and it does seem like most of you feel this is a reasonably classic/staple dress. It will be great for work.

I take on board the suggestions about stepping away from the denim jacket and white trainers - I think I can manage that! Sandals for now, chunky cardis and boots for autumn.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 04/08/2023 16:30

I’m in London and still seeing loads of people in floral dresses with white trainers. The white trainers look seems to have proliferated a lot more since last year.

Im not talking fashion influencers and the like, just ordinary women going about their business.

People are wearing other things too of course - but usually with trainers!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 04/08/2023 16:31

I liked the specific one you posted OP!

I think the tiered dresses may be petering out but still, why not wear them if you like them!

If you're only 5 foot one like I am then they were never in!

Same here 🙈 love the look but never fits, always too long!!

Yep. ‘Fraid so.

This particular dress fitted really nicely, the style was spot on, and I felt good in it, but I just worry the the trend has passed. That feeling when you realise that fashion has moved on, but you haven't.....

I would wear it but just not with white sneakers and a fitted denim jacket. That is the trend that's "over" (if you care about such things). If you want the dress up look more current wear it with chunky running type Dad trainers, or a different colour running shoe, or with chunky fishermen type sandals, and with a different jacket such as oversize blazer.
