Just bought this dress in the Hush sale. Good price, perfect length, fits great.....I just have this feeling that maybe floral midi dresses are over, and I won't wear it. Thoughts??

Also the clothes on the rack I don’t think my dgm would wear. I haven’t seen so much stuff that looked either cheap and nasty and wouldn’t be out of place on a market stall or just plain drab and dreary with long sleeves and a high neck

Craftycorvid · 04/08/2023 07:52

I generally respond to trends with a shrug (not the knitted kind, although….). Occasionally I might concede a specific look is glaringly dated - and it’s usually the shape of jeans. I’ll just store the dated things until such a time they are declared ‘in’ once more if I liked them enough to begin with. I look at the shape of jeans the young uns like and it’s the 90s all over again. As to a great midi dress that’s easy to wear, I will be that person in the charity shop hoovering up the cast-offs.

Wear the dress if you like it and don't be such a sheep!

This. 💯

thedevilinablackdress · 04/08/2023 08:01

Fashion and trends are there to serve me, not the other way round. If I like it, I'll dip in, and if I really like it, I'll be with@Craftycorvid hoovering up the cast offs once others have decided it's over.
If I don't, then it can pass me by.

Threenow · 04/08/2023 08:30

I'm the same as @thedevilinablackdress. If something is fashionable and I like it I will buy it, if I don't like it then no way am I wearing it. If it has gone out of fashion by the following year I couldn't care less. No wonder landfill is so full of discarded clothing if people can't wear something just because it might no longer be fashionable - and who decides what is and isn't?

Fairyliz · 04/08/2023 08:43

As I hit 40 I decided to wear things that I liked, suited me and flattered my shape. I want to look as good as possible not trendy.
As such I have managed to swerve these dresses which seem to add pounds onto me. So I am actually hoping they are going out of fashion, so there are more things that suit me in the shops.

dottiedodah · 04/08/2023 08:46

If I like it I wear it! I am quite short and find lots too long .Floral dresses are a classic though ,they would be hard to cancel I think

LivesinLondon2000 · 04/08/2023 08:48

I don’t think they’ll ever be completely over. I’ve been wearing floral midi dresses and trainers for 20+ years well before they were ‘in’. It never looked super trendy or high-fashion but didn’t look frumpy or dated either.
I think it will always be a fairly timeless look - and some type of floral print will always be in fashion but I think the type of prints that look on trend do change and that’s what you might need to think about. Maybe ditsy type, Liberty style prints never really look dated but they aren’t to everyone’s taste.

I just can’t imagine midi dresses disappearing - they are more practical than maxi length and cover your legs removing any need for hair removal and fake tan faff in summer. Combined with trainers, they’re also comfy. I don’t think people will let go of that in a hurry!

Agree with previous poster that it’s jeans shape that are the thing that seem to go in and out of fashion the most.

Floisme · 04/08/2023 08:55

I'm not sure how helpful it is to have one poster after another saying they don't care when the op clearly does care, a little bit - enough to ask the question at any rate.

I very rarely wear dresses so I may not be the best person to answer but, as I remember, the dresses of a couple of years ago had very little structure. This one, as Hush say themselves in the 'Details' section, has been given an update with a drawstring at the waist. It gives it a bit of shape, which sets it apart from the very voluminous ones.

MariaVT65 · 04/08/2023 08:57

I have literally no idea what’s in fashion, and also don’t give a shit. I wear what fits or what looks good on me. Absolutely wear your dress, I think it’s lovely!

CouldIHaveThatInEnglishPlease · 04/08/2023 09:05

I do think the floral midi, white trainers and denim jacket look has had its day, but as individual items they are each fine - just not together.
So wear the dress but pair it with a chunky cardigan and knee high boots or chunky loafers.

Panama2 · 04/08/2023 09:44

I think the dress is lovely and versatile. I have to be careful with florals or I look like a Laura Ashley sofa

Wear that with a soft knitted sleeveless vest and loafers ( as per pic)
Totally on trend rather than white pumps and denim jacket.

Fashion is about conning gullible people out of money and so they feel they belong to a particular tribe.

The great thing about getting older is not giving a fuck about the unwanted opinions of others.

Wear whatever you want to. 😁👍

Does 'unwanted' include giving the op your opinion of the fashion industry and the people who enjoy it, when what she actually asked for was thoughts on a new dress?

GarlicGrace · 04/08/2023 10:47

Even I like that one, @CointreauVersial, and I'm possibly the only woman in the UK who hasn't got a droopy floral dress!

I agree they'll stay around for ages, as a wardrobe basic. They're comfy & convenient. (I do wear comfy, convenient dresses all the time - just that mine are straight up & down, and not floral).

I bet you'll get far more wear out of it than you expected.

Floisme · 04/08/2023 10:51

No you're not GarlicGrace Wink I like it too. I think it's a good colour which will still work in the autumn and like I've said, I think that drawstring waist makes a big difference.

Guavafish1 · 04/08/2023 10:53

Don't follow fashion and wear what you like

justasking111 · 04/08/2023 10:57

My DIL bought me a ditsy dress a few years ago for my autumn birthday from seasalt. I was a bit ambivalent until I wore it. Fabulous on, warm, long sleeves. I wear it a lot. She's also bought me a fat Face one which I wear a lot.

They're smart, practical and such a change from trousers. I did have to buy new petticoats 😊

LovelySummerForDucks · 04/08/2023 11:00

I honestly think floral midi dresses will never really be out of fashion, I think they will be something that will always be a staple.

Giraffe1123 · 04/08/2023 11:04

I went shopping yesterday and floral midi dresses are still in all the shops.

NoAprilFool · 04/08/2023 11:14

I opened this thread thinking “hope not, I’ve finally found one that looks ok on me” and lo and behold it’s that exact dress 😂😂which I’m wearing right now.
I love it, it suits me and I’ll be wearing it until it falls apart.

BrookNoRivals · 04/08/2023 11:18

I don't think this look will ever be totally over- a floral dress is a staple. But styling it like Carrie Johnson is a bit 2021 so, if you want to look modern, try other looks- that dress would look nice with brown boots IMO.

LimeCheesecake · 04/08/2023 11:21

I think they are past being fashionable, and now are just something lots of woman have, they will still be a big part of middle aged woman’s wardrobes for a while. I wouldn’t buy one planning it being a 5 year purchase.

However, that dress would lend itself well to being taken up in the future if just below the knee is a more fashionable length than mid calf. Wear it midi for now with an eye to altering next summer?
