Are floral midi dresses OVER?

CointreauVersial · 03/08/2023 23:18

Just bought this dress in the Hush sale. Good price, perfect length, fits great.....I just have this feeling that maybe floral midi dresses are over, and I won't wear it. Thoughts??

Sorry I posted before seeing the dress and now see it's also potentially Autumnal- which is very nice and versatile! It will look great with opaques and ankle boots or with chunky loafers and a cardi imho!

Fizzology · 04/08/2023 16:46

Personally, I think midi floral dresses are a fashion item. They were trendy. Now they are not. I have exactly one, and it won't be making it past a quick trip to the Tesco Metro at this point.

I do not consider myself fashionable. Even so, I think that dress will soon look 'out of fashion'. It's not a classic LBD or a timelessly stylish wool jumper or jeans that fit just right, iyswim.

Now, depending who you are, that may be a clarion call to buy more so that you're stocked with floral midis when they are nowhere to be found. Because for you they are a classic.

Or you may want to check out the incoming styles.

I think you should wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable in yourself. If that's a floral midi, go for it!

But yeah, they are 'over' fashion-wise. That doesn't mean people will stop wearing them.

Floisme · 04/08/2023 17:00

See I don't think it's so much about the length or the florals, I think it was all that flounciness and the voluminous shape that very much had a fashion moment. But (and despite my suspicions about the size of the reduction) I think this dress gives us a fresher take on it.

LadyBird1973 · 04/08/2023 17:20

Tbf we haven't had much floral summer dress weather recently.
I do think it's the colours which will keep this dress current for longer. If it was pastel or obviously summery then I would think it has a shorter lifespan in terms of fashion.

EgyptianMummies · 04/08/2023 18:22

The direct link makes it look like a sneaky sale advertisement.

Nothing that suits you or flatters you is ever ‘over,’ because looking good and feeling good are (I hope) things that will never be over.

Choosing clothing based on whether it is ‘on trend’ is what should be over.

CointreauVersial · 04/08/2023 19:59

@EgyptianMummies I can promise you I don't work for Hush. 😊

@Floisme this is a pretty standard price reduction for them. Maybe because they are overpriced? I couldn't possibly comment.

Anyway.....plot twist nobody saw coming.....I tried the dress on again earlier, and the bastard thing has a fault on the front which I hadn't noticed before (cut in the fabric). 😖 So this particular one is going back. But very interesting to hear people's perspective on the whole floral midi thing. Food for thought.....

I went shopping yesterday and floral midi dresses are still in all the shops.

I was shopping today and there are masses in all of the shops. There were also lots of lovely ladies looking all summery in theirs in the streets.

Threenow · 04/08/2023 20:53

It's very wearing when someone posts on S&B to ask a question about current fashion, to have people come on and say not to care about fashion. Caring about it is valid, and if someone wants to look more current that is fine.

It may well be wearying, but some of us are appalled at the casual attitude that if something is "out" (according to whom?) then it must be discarded and a trip to the shops is necessary to buy what is now "in" - while the discarded items end up in landfill.

midsomermurderess · 04/08/2023 21:00

Threenow, you are completely missing the point in your dull, vapid pomposity.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 04/08/2023 21:25

The OP is not talking about ditching her existing clothes, she's talking about whether to keep this specific new dress! It makes sense from an ecological point of view to evaluate if you would get good use out of a given item of clothing.

So start a thread about climate change or waste then, in a suitable topic, and stop derailing various OP's threads about fashion with your collective outrage and activism. Nobody is complaining about your beliefs and some may share them, but nobody wants it rammed down their throats when they're trying to have a nice chat about something inconsequential such as whether or not to wear a dress with flowers on it

No one has mentioned throwing anything away?

Agree with others, think beyond current fads and what flatters and feels right on YOU. I'll be glad the floral midi trend is over because the bloody things have been taking up rail space for far too long. They aren't right for me and they remind me of Kate Middleton too. Conservative.
I don't care about what's in...I care about what's on. As in, on ME.
Wear what you like!

I feel just like you!

Floisme · 05/08/2023 07:45

If that's a standard reduction for Hush then fair enough op, although yeah, get it exchanged if there's a flaw.

The only other thing I'm wondering is whether you've already got the things posters have suggested would take it into autumn/winter, and whether they really do work with the dress? Cos if you end up having to start searching for 'the right' boots and knitwear then it won't be such a bargain!

I hope some of the comments aren't getting to you. This board has gone crazy lately but I'm sure regulars will know you're a long time poster with, if I remember correctly, a history of great charity shop buys. You have absolutely no need to explain or defend yourself.

narniabusiness · 05/08/2023 08:15

At the moment I’m still happy to wear all my midi floral and broiderie anglais dresses from a fashion point of view but it’s the dreadful weather that has kept them in the wardrobe. A white or pale print looks great when it’s sunny, and I would only wear a maxi when the sun is out. The only floral dress I haven’t worn (chiffon with a large pale pink print on black) is more buffet style which I bought about 5 years ago and now feels dated.
I would also say that I’m fed up with the wear what you likers. We know 🤷🏿‍♂️. We aren’t blindly trend chasing but enjoying being current. It’s one of the joys of life.

CointreauVersial · 05/08/2023 09:13

Haha, thanks @Floisme - I'm enjoying the debate, to be honest. And, coincidentally, the other thing I ordered in the Hush sale was a chunky cardi, and I'm definitely keeping that, no question. Even if it does shed more hairs than my mum's dog.

ChocBanana · 05/08/2023 09:13

Who, exactly, gets to decide what’s “in” or “out”? I wish I could be in the financial position to chuck perfectly good, wearable clothes into landfill because some vapid, faceless journalist wrote an article about it or some clothes buyers decided to change things up (notwithstanding the fact that if these journalists and buyers didn’t do that all the time, they would be out of a job).
Or maybe you give them to charity, so that those people worse off than yourself can pride themselves on looking like they can’t quite afford to keep up with everyone else.
But then, I also don’t give a flying fuck about whether other people approve of my clothes or not. I wear what I like, as long as it’s clean, it fits and is appropriate to the occasion. And considering I only buy clothes I like (mostly from charity shops), presumably I don’t have anything that’s “in”.

Trust me, life is FAR too short to worry about other people’s opinions of you.

DottyLottieLou · 05/08/2023 09:14

Are you a teenager? If not wear what you want and create your own style. It's not what you wear, it's how you wear it.

Floisme · 05/08/2023 09:20

It seems life is also too short for some posters to even read the op properly.

TheOGCCL · 05/08/2023 09:24

I think floral midi dresses have become a wardrobe staple. I see scores of women out in them and they look very nice. They hide a multitude of sins and since Covid a lot of people are bigger than they were and many of these dresses are flattering. Jeans have also fallen from favour as a smart casual outfit. Something that makes people feel better about themselves is going to have a lot of longevity. They have moved on from being especially fashionable but imo won’t be going anywhere.

A different type of pattern like geometric or spots is probably slightly more on trend and potentially more timeless.

And god forbid they should read the full thread and see how the conversation has developed.

narniabusiness · 05/08/2023 09:29

@ChocBanana Why would anyone want to throw perfectly good clothes into landfill regardless of their financial position? And what’s wrong with donating things to charity shops? It raises money for charities. That’s a good thing surely.
There seems to be an assumption that because someone is interested in fashion they must be discarding perfectly wearable clothes.

ChocBanana · 05/08/2023 09:30

I think this is a fashion journalist desperate to get others to do their work for them. The user name suggests that. We will all be stars in the next issue of Vogue, presumably.

ChocBanana · 05/08/2023 09:34

People saying “why would you assume she would throw it away/give it to charity” - the OP said she had already bought it but won’t wear it. So what else would you do with it? Keep it for when society dictates its OK again?
And yes, it turns out this particular item has a fault on it. That doesn’t change the principle of the initial post.

Chewbecca · 05/08/2023 09:39

Yes, they are. But less so with a chunky cardi.

All the people saying wear what you like is BS. IRL 5 years ago noone wore a floral midi dress. 2 years ago everyone did. So it clearly is not the case that everyone wears exactly what is perfect for them with no regard to fashion. People DO follow trends so it is a totally reasonable question.
