Are floral midi dresses OVER?

CointreauVersial · 03/08/2023 23:18

Just bought this dress in the Hush sale. Good price, perfect length, fits great.....I just have this feeling that maybe floral midi dresses are over, and I won't wear it. Thoughts??

Why on earth would it matter if it's not the height of fashion more? If you like the dress, wear it!

This.

Wear it if you like it.
If you don't, cancel the order.

The advantage of getting older is I care far less about trends and what's in/out at any one time, I don't much anyway but not even less so. I wear what I want, what fits me nicely, what I feel comfortable in, what I like,

Beaverbridge · 04/08/2023 11:41

I love it. Shops are still full of them. It's a great easy to wear style for all age groups.

RudsyFarmer · 04/08/2023 11:44

Nothing is ‘over’. I mean maybe the deely-boppers I wore as a kid in the eighties might not work on the school run but most other things are fair game.

My basis for an outfit is;
is it flattering?
Is it appropriate?
is it comfortable enough?
doI feel confident?

Whether it’s fashionable is about number 2,4567 on the list.

Shufflebumnessie · 04/08/2023 11:54

I wear what I feel good in, regardless of whether it's in fashion. I've only just discovered white trainers but apparently they're out now. However, I like them and they look good with several of my outfits, so they are staying until they fall apart!
If you love it and feel good in it, keep it.

I do think the floral midi, white trainers and denim jacket look has had its day, but as individual items they are each fine - just not together.
So wear the dress but pair it with a chunky cardigan and knee high boots or chunky loafers.

I came to say this - the first look with denim jacket and white trainers is very dated, I saw a few people wearing it last weekend and it just looks wrong now. But if the dress suits you it could definitely be styled differently, as PP suggests.

It's very wearing when someone posts on S&B to ask a question about current fashion, to have people come on and say not to care about fashion. Caring about it is valid, and if someone wants to look more current that is fine.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 04/08/2023 12:03

This is quite a funny thread, because it's in Style and Beauty, so thinking one might like to look a bit trendy or fashionable shouldn't be completely taboo, should it?

I think these dresses are looking a bit dated, sorry but they are to me, everyone is wearing them and I'm not denying the denim jacket/white shoes/midi dress isn't still being worn endlessly, but my thoughts are- is this the right time to buy another one?

I've just bought a few things and none of them are a midi floral dress (I don't do floral anyway), I like longer skirts, black midi-dresses, prints on a shirt, jackets that are not blue denim, but not the whole dress/trainers/denim combo. I'm looking for things that freshen everything up a bit, not drag it backwards. It's like I still have skinny jeans in my wardrobe and occasionally I wear them, but I'm not looking to invest in new ones right now. Same for white leather trainers- I'm wearing the one's I've got but not buying new ones.

If I desperately wanted a floral midi-dress, I'd get on Vinted and search brands like Hush and find one cheap and wear it for a year or two.

Just to provide another perspective.

I was thinking recently that that particular look didn't seem to as ubiquitous this summer as it had been in the last couple of years.

Fashion is about conning gullible people out of money and so they feel they belong to a particular tribe.

The great thing about getting older is not giving a fuck about the unwanted opinions of others.

Wear whatever you want to. 😁👍

But we all want to look vaguely fashionable, don't we? my Dad worked in textile marketing ie this, getting people to spend money to be "on trend" because some random person's opinion of you is more important than your own.

Wear what you feel good in, screw what "society" has been conditioned to believe through excellent marketing like my Dad did. This also goes for things like is your kitchen out of date? Yes because it is 10 years old. Do I like it though? Yes, and would I judge someone else on their kitchen, no, each to their own. Same with feature walls, the badge on your car, the handbag you carry, skinny/Mum/high waisted jean trends. Stop caring about what other people may think of you, it is no way to live your life.

QueefQueen80s · 04/08/2023 12:13

"But we all want to look vaguely fashionable, don't we"

Erm... no. I want to look and feel good for me. I actually can't believe there are people out there who won't wear an outfit they feel amazing in because it's not in fashion!? It's very sad.

StarlightLady · 04/08/2023 12:16

John Lewis say it's over, but I'm not so sure. Persnally I like big bold flowers (goes with my boobs 😀) rather than a small floral print.

Growlybear83 · 04/08/2023 12:20

I completely agree. I really don't give a toss about what is supposedly trendy or fashionable and have always worn what I like not what I'm told I should like. There are times when I find it hard to buy clothes that I like because the clothes that dominate most retailers are not to my taste, but there are other times when I'm in my element with loads of bright florals and lime greens 😆😆. I never have, and never will buy any clothes or footwear because it is in fashion. I dress to make myself feel good, not other people.

PollyAmour · 04/08/2023 12:34

I am tall and I love floral midi dresses, worn with flipflops or sandals in the summer, and boots and a cardigan in the winter. I don't care if I'm unfashionable and out of date, I like the look and it likes me.

For me, the denim jacket, white trainers and maxi dress uniform has had its day - but if you like the look, then wear it. Don't be swayed by what is or isn't considered to be stylish.

NatashaDancing · 04/08/2023 12:47

It'll be shocking news to Erdem, Zimmermann, Emilia Wickstead then.

Riverlee · 04/08/2023 12:57

Wear it!

That’s because it’s been so flippin’ cold and we’ve all been in winter woolies!

dudsville · 04/08/2023 13:02

Whilst I don't wear "ditsy" prints or florals close to that effect, I am always clothed in some kind of check print - I was thinking of this thread earlier and realising that it will be a funny thing in the future when check is considered fuddy duddy. I'll be swanning about in my oversized check dresses to the sniggers of the young things thinking I look very dated. Hopefully my hearing and eyesight will have gone to the extent that they do not impinge on my happiness!

Footgoose · 04/08/2023 13:10

Thanks OP ! I’ve just ordered this . It’s lovely . I’m not ashamed to say I’ve worn long and short floaty dresses since my twenties , it’s my staple look and I’m not giving up on it any time soon . Tights in the winter , pumps or sandals in the summer . I admit I have ditched the denim jacket .

Highdaysandholidays1 · 04/08/2023 13:17

If the OP was truly unconcerned with style, fashion, trends, or whatever, she wouldn't be asking if this dress was OVER because it would be immaterial.

I find Style and Beauty isn't a very good place to discuss style (beauty is good) because the vast majority of people claim not to be interested in style, what others think, fashion and all the things that might be discussed on this board.

This isn't an unfashionable dress, neither is it a fashionable one. Some dresses have moved on to being a bit more structured/shirt dresses with prints, like the ones linked above so they are still dresses, still have florals but look really fresh, I've seen a few worn and they look amazing.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 04/08/2023 13:20

@dudsville I don't think checks are as 'in' or 'out' as this floral midi, or rather the floral midi/white trainers/denim jacket combo. I can't see anyone looking twice at a checked dress...

Dresses do date though, Vinted is an amazing archive of the past 30 years in dress trends, some of the 'vintage' stuff is only 25/20 years old, so from my 90s, early 2000's era and its come back around again!

Jamtartforme · 04/08/2023 13:24

They’re not over but the shops bought up loads of floral fabric over the last couple of years and are now having one last huge push at selling it all off so are making squillions of puff sleeve dresses. They’ll be extinct this time next year.

This is so true about s&b at the moment - the board is just overrun by people who claim to not care about fashion/what other people think.

Yes, why do they even bother? It feels like they’re all just competing appear as disdainful and aloof as they can. Weird.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 04/08/2023 13:52

To me, I don't mind people being disdainful and aloof about fashion if they are in Chat or AIBU, but it's really off-putting in Style and Beauty because it means we can't discuss trends, ideas, new looks, what's dated, new shapes, anything without many people coming to tell us that we are superficial and sensible people just wear any old thing and don't care what others think.

Then we have lots of threads on 'I feel frumpy/lost my way/feel out of touch/not fashionable after my baby/menopause/divorce' which are hard to answer, without referencing current trends!

It would be nice to have discussions about longer-term trends like skinnies or floral midis. That's all.
